RouteWhat's the plan?
- Arrival in Dubrovnik airport
- Transfer to Tjentište – Sutijeska national park (3,5 h)
- Trek to peak Kuk
- Overnight stay in Tjentište
After a brief and warm welcome, we head directly to Tjentiste. Our first location is in the Sutjeska National Park, the oldest, as well as the largest of its kind in Bosnia and Herzegovina, known for its profound natural riches.
We’ll kick off our adventure in the beautiful surroundings of Mount Volujak.
With peaks above 2,000 meters with a large number of glacier lakes (17 to be exact), it presents a perfect place for hikers and trekkers alike. The path leads us through its green hills and lakes to its peak, simply called Kuk.
Due to its preserved and unspoiled nature, here lives one of the largest colonies of brown bears in the Balkans, as well as other wildlife.
After a couple of hours of trekking, we descend to the south and to our accommodation in Tjentiste for dinner and a well-deserved rest.
- Climb Bosnian highest peak Maglic (2.386 m)
- Trek to Trnovacko lake
- Overnight stay
After our first day of trekking and essentially warming up, today we are ready for our first serious ascent – to the highest peak of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Maglic. With our transfer, we reach to a passage at 1.700 m. From here, our interesting and challenging climb begins. We’ll be in some parts exposed to the elements, but if needed, always secured by steel cables, all along the ascent.
After climbing to the top (approx. 4h), we descend to Trnovo Lake, the heart of the national park of Sutjeska. Here, a well-deserved break awaits on its shores, giving us the strength to descend all the way down to the foot of the mountain, all while enjoying our downhill walk through deep, coniferous forests.
We arrive at our accommodation on Tjentiste just in time for dinner, freshly made from local produce. We rest and sum our impressions of our first proper adventure.
- Transfer to Tara River rafting (1h)
- Rafting through Tara canyon
- Overnight stay
The Tara River cuts through the Tara River Canyon, the longest canyon in Europe and the second-longest in the world after the Grand Canyon, being 78 kilometers long. The canyon is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is part of the Durmitor National Park.
Armed with helmets and neoprene suits, here we will set out on an unforgettable rafting tour, an intense adrenaline experience that will fully engage for a proper adventure.
After the conclusion of our rafting adventure, we’ll take a break on the banks of river Tara for lunch and afterward you’ll have free time to bathe and enjoy the sun.
As the night falls, dinner and a good night’s rest await.
- Transfer to Zabljak, Montenegro (3 h)
- Trek around Black and Snake lake
- Overnight stay
On our fourth day, we’ll head over to Montenegro, for a nice and easy trek of Durmitor’s glacial lakes. Following our walk around Black Lake, we’ll have an opportunity to visit one of the other, nearby glacial lakes, but we could also simply lounge around and enjoy the astonishing views offered by our accommodation in Zabljak.
The depths of these lakes harbor numerous underwater passages, through which water flows into the rivers of Tara and Piva, representing a distinct natural phenomenon, a bifurcation of sorts. Black Lake, as well as the remaining glacial lakes in the vicinity of Durmitor, are collectively known as the Eyes of the Mountain.
In the afternoon we rest, preparing ourselves for tomorrow’s climb to Bobotov peak, the highest peak of Montenegro.
- Trek to Bobotov peak (2.522)
- Overnight stay in Zabljak
Today we’ll climb the highest peak on Durmitor, called Bobotov peak (2522 m). It’s one of the most attractive peaks of Durmitor, offering a stunning view of Škrcka lakes and surrounding peaks. During the ascent, we’ll hike and master an altitude difference of about 700 meters.
And for the final part, just before the summit, there is a section that’s secured by steel cables, where, with our help of experienced instructors, we’ll overcome this final obstacle and have a little congratulatory dance on the top.
After our successful ascent and safe descent back to Zabljak, we’ll have an opportunity to enjoy the local cuisine from this area. After this long hiking day, a good night's sleep will come as a guarantee, so we can recuperate our strength for the adventures that await us.
- Transfer to Trebinje (3 h)
- Guided city tour of Trebinje old town
- Visit Tvrdos winery, with tasting of their selection of wine
- Overnight stay in Trebinje
After breakfast, we descend to the south and the city of Trebinje.
We take a tour of Trebinje’s old town, established as a small hamlet in the 18th century which quickly developed into a significant trading center in the region.
There is scarcely a town in Herzegovina that was not erected alongside a freshwater river. Trebinje is no exception; its old town lines the banks of the Trebisnjica River that flows through the heart of the city.
The river and the city have always been known for the enormous old mills which tread the Trebisnjica. Although they are not fully functional today, they remain a symbol of Herzegovina’s not-so-distant past when everything was directly connected to the power of nature.
We’ll spend our last day in this little, charming city, taking a guided tour on a leisure pace, summarizing our experiences, touring around little streets of Trebinje, leaving plenty of time for some quick, or not-so-quick gift shopping and just enjoying each other’s company. After, as a treat, we’ll head on to monastery Tvrdoš to visit and taste some of their famous wine selection, indigenous for this region.
Finally, we arrive back at our accommodation for our last dinner.

Can I start the trek from somewhere else?
This 7-day trek through the Balkan Kingdoms begins and ends at Dubrovnik Airport, in Croatia. However, if you are already in Bosnia and Herzegovina, you can arrange with the trekking company to meet at some other point, just let them know in advance.
Summer and early fall is the best season to experience the Balkans. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, daytime temperatures in summer range from 22 – 30 °C. However, at night it can get cooler, so don’t forget to still bring some layers of clothing to keep you warm! Also, during autumn days are a little bit shorter and thus colder with a higher chance of rain, so some kind of rain jacket is advised.
The interior of Montenegro has a sub-alpine climate, which means that summers are warm but winters can be quite harsh, with temperatures falling down to -15 °C and heavy snowfall. Summer and early fall are the best times to visit Montenegro (June to September). Overnight lows in the mountains range from 3 – 8 °C and daily highs range from 13 – 20 °C. Across the country, it generally rains about a third of the days each month.
Tipping is not so common in the Balkans and it is by no means a mandatory requirement. However, if you got a good service from your guide and you want to thank him, it will always be much appreciated. How much to tip your guide is up to you.
A reasonable level of fitness is required for hiking, approx. ascending 700 m at a relaxed pace. You will need to be able to handle 5 – 6 hours of hiking at a continuous pace for this adventure.
Being fit for this trek is not only important for your own safety but also for the whole team's. The fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the trek. If you are in good shape, this trek shouldn't be a problem for you. However, if you are worried that it might be too much, you can always train in advance, walking a few hours a day and climbing some stairs. But don’t worry, your guide will be with you at all times and help you if needed, to complete your adventure securely and safely.

EST Adventure is one man’s dream come true. No achievement in life, no peak climbed and no journey to the remotest part of the world can be fully appreciated if there is no friend with you to share the joy. It is for this very reason that EST Adventure was established – to share with you the wide experience gained by a small group of people in expeditions, explorations and adventures over the past fifteen years.
We believe that deep down in every one of us lies a little explorer, who, if given proper support, could climb even the highest peaks of the world. It only takes a little persistence to regain lost confidence and everything is possible. The people who have joined us and achieved their dreams, the dreams they could not even say loudly before are undeniable proof. Under our guidance over 250 mountaineers have successfully climbed the peaks over 6000 m high, and over 20 of them have had opportunity to view the world from summits over 8000 m high, the youngest of them was 18 years of age when he reached the top of Aconcagua (6962 m), while the oldest celebrated his 70th birthday on the same peak.
We shall not forget to mention those to whom objectives and major achievements do not represent the essence of their efforts, but it is the path they follow and the vastness they explore that they cherish. With them, we have travelled around areas seen by only a very few, met people whose simplicity of life and purity of soul changed our views of the world.
Our basic principle is unus pro omnibus et omnes pro uno – one for all and all for one, because we believe that good team spirit creates an atmosphere where everyone can express their value. We can thank this approach for the fact that our expeditions, treks and adventures represent true schools, where we all learn something new
Climbing to the top of a mountain is not just about testing your abilities; the experience that slowly penetrates your mind during the expedition, continuous questioning of yourself, insight into and discovering of your own inner self. It is a permanent process of self-knowledge in communication with Nature, and with other people in extreme conditions of life. It is also the communication with the people you meet there that will make you reconsider some of your own beliefs and prejudices. The encounter with another culture and way of life helps us gain a better perception of ourselves when we return home. What is important is not whether their or our views are right, but the broader viewing angle we gain by considering their points of view, either inward or outward.
In everyday life we are witnessing a great alienation between people, flourishing of individualism and egocentrism, fear of straightforward and honest communication, loss of confidence, which are all occurring before our own eyes… To travel together with like-minded people and sharing an experience can mark the beginning of a new chapter in your life. So, I am inviting you to join us on our adventures, to change together and go back home feeling completely renewed after each trip, with a secretive smile at the corners of your mouth, the meaning of which will remain unknown to all but a few. Life is wonderful.
