The upper Mustang, also known as the Lost Kingdom is a striking blend of astonishing beauty with an arid landscape surrounded by snowy peaks. The Mustang is stretched along the border with Tibet. The upper Mustang was restricted to foreigners until 1992. Its people share cultural links to Tibet and have a lifestyle centered on Vajrayana Buddhism. The Mustang has majestic monasteries with precious paintings and relics that hold the key to the history of this remote land. The high-elevation terrain is mostly barren you will find oases of green around the villages.

Trekking in the Mustang will make you see one of the most mysterious and least known kingdoms in the world. The isolated kingdom of Mustang prospered in the 15th century when its strategic location enabled to trade salt between Tibet and Nepal.

The landscape of Mustang is dry and exists out naturally carved sandstone pillars and discontinuous moraine terraces. These all naturally present a colorful variety made up of red, yellow and brown together. The trek to Mustang makes you pass through an almost treeless landscape and infertile landscape. You will experience the strong wind blowing across the area as you mostly protected from the rain, should the monsoon be going rounds in other parts of the country. Lo Manthang is the capital of Mustang and has long served as the seat of the royal family. The village is surrounded by a wall and the former king and his family are still celebrated and are actively involved in the day to day community affair.

After having early breakfast at our hotel in Pokhara, we drive to Pokhara airport and take a spectacular early morning flight to Jomsom. Just out of Jomsom we cross a suspension bridge and then walk along the riverbank of the Kali Gandaki. The trail is quite barren with craggy rocks and sand and is mostly flat, which makes it very easy going. It is also very picturesque, with views of big peaks all around such as Dhaulagiri, Tukuche and Nilgiri. To the north of the entire Annapurna massif can be seen..

Trek to Chuksang

Duration: 04:20 h
Distance: 11.5 km
Ascent: 460 m
Descent: 350 m
Today, we trek right up to the river valley using a combination of the high trail and the riverbank pathways. The trail then widens significantly revealing an endless stretch of sand on the west bank of the river; we stop for lunch at the village of Tangbe, where we come across the first black, white and red chortens that typify the Upper Mustang. The little town is a labyrinth of narrow alleys among white washed houses, fields of buck wheat and barley and apple orchards. Nilgiri Peak continues to dominate the southern skyline. Chuksang village is only about a 2hrs hike after Tangbe.
