The 2026 Total Solar Eclipse in Spain

On August 12, 2026, a total solar eclipse will cross the Iberian Peninsula — the first to do so in over 120 years. The path of totality sweeps from Galicia in northwest Spain southeastward through León, Burgos, Zaragoza, and the Balearic Islands, eventually crossing into the Mediterranean.

For hikers and trekkers, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: the eclipse path passes directly through some of Europe's most iconic long-distance hiking routes, including the Camino de Santiago. But not every trail offers the same experience. The eclipse occurs close to sunset (around 20:28–20:33 CEST), which means the sun will be low on the horizon. Where you watch matters as much as whether you're in the path of totality.

We cross-referenced 112 accommodations across 9 of our most popular hiking trails with official eclipse data from Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) to determine exactly which locations offer both total coverage and confirmed visibility.

Best Hiking Trails for the 2026 Eclipse (Ranked)

Not all trails in the eclipse path offer the same viewing experience. Our analysis considers three factors: eclipse coverage percentage, confirmed visibility (based on sun elevation and terrain), and the number of trail days spent within the totality zone.

#1 Best Choice

Camino Francés: Sarria to Santiago

8 days · ~115 km · Galicia, Spain

Eclipse Days: 5 of 7 Coverage: 100% Total Visibility: CONFIRMED ✓

The Camino Francés from Sarria to Santiago walks you through the heart of the totality zone. Locations like Sarria, Portomarín, Palas de Rei, Melide, and O Pedrouzo all have 100% total eclipse with verified visibility. The sun sits at approximately 11° above the horizon — comfortably high enough for a clear view. This is the best hiking trail in Europe for watching the 2026 eclipse.

#2 Great Choice

Camino del Norte: Baamonde to Santiago

7 days · ~130 km · Galicia, Spain

Eclipse Days: 4 of 6 Coverage: 100% Total Visibility: CONFIRMED ✓

The final stretch of the Camino del Norte through Galicia offers an excellent eclipse experience. Starting in Baamonde, you walk through four days of confirmed total eclipse visibility before arriving at Santiago. A fantastic alternative if you prefer a quieter route.

⚠ Not Visible

GR221 Mallorca & Ibiza Trail

Balearic Islands

Coverage: 100% Total Sun Elevation: ~2.8–3° Visibility: NOT VISIBLE ✗

Despite 100% totality coverage, the eclipse is not visible from Mallorca or Ibiza. The sun is too low on the horizon (2.8–3°), blocked by terrain and atmospheric haze.

Partial Eclipse

Pyrenees: Porta del Cel & Carros de Foc

5 days · Hut-to-hut · Catalan Pyrenees

Coverage: 99.3% Partial Visibility: VISIBLE ✓

Just outside the path of totality with 99.3% coverage. You will see a dramatic darkening of the sky and a spectacular near-total eclipse, but not the full corona. Still remarkable combined with world-class mountain hiking.

Why the Camino Francés Is the #1 Eclipse Hiking Trail

The Camino Francés from Sarria to Santiago is an 8-day self-guided hiking trip that covers approximately 115 km through the green hills and traditional villages of Galicia. It is the most popular section of the Camino de Santiago — and in August 2026, it becomes the most exciting trail in Europe.

Five of the seven hiking days take place in locations with 100% total solar eclipse and confirmed visibility. You will walk through Portomarín, Palas de Rei, and Melide — all squarely in the centre of the totality zone — before reaching Santiago de Compostela for the finish. The trek includes accommodation in hotels and guesthouses, luggage transfer, and a navigation app.

Eclipse Day tip: If you time your trek so that August 12 falls on one of the days between Sarria and O Pedrouzo, you will have the best chance to watch the eclipse from an elevated, open position along the trail with an unobstructed western horizon. Consider pausing at a high point around 20:25 CEST to witness the moment of totality.

The Camino Francés is accessible for all fitness levels, with an average walking time of about 4 hours per day. It is a fantastic option for solo hikers, couples, and groups who want to combine the spiritual experience of the Camino with a rare astronomical event.

Mallorca & Ibiza: Total Eclipse, But Not Visible

This is perhaps the most important finding of our research. Both Mallorca and Ibiza lie within the path of totality — they technically receive 100% solar coverage. Many eclipse maps online suggest these islands are prime viewing spots. They are not.

The eclipse occurs at approximately 20:30 CEST, when the sun is barely 2.8–3.1° above the horizon on the Balearic Islands. At this extremely low angle, the Serra de Tramuntana mountains on Mallorca and the general terrain on Ibiza block the sun from view. Spain's official IGN Eclipse Visualizer confirms "IS NOT VISIBLE" for all Balearic locations we checked.

If you are planning a GR221 Mallorca or Ibiza Trail trek in August 2026, enjoy them for their incredible scenery — just do not plan your trip around the eclipse.

Other Hiking Trails & Eclipse Coverage

We also analysed our other popular European hiking trails. Here is how they relate to the 2026 eclipse:

99.3% Partial Eclipse

Pyrenees (Porta del Cel & Carros de Foc)

Catalan Pyrenees, Spain

Coverage: 99.3% Visibility: VISIBLE (Partial)

Extremely close to totality but not quite there. You will see a dramatic darkening of the sky and an impressive partial eclipse. The sun is higher in the sky here than on the Balearic Islands, so the eclipse is clearly visible. A spectacular bonus to an already stunning Pyrenees hut-to-hut trek.

Outside Totality

Cinque Terre, Italy

Ligurian Coast, Italy

The Cinque Terre trail on the Italian Ligurian coast falls outside the path of totality. You may observe a minor partial eclipse, but this is not a destination for eclipse viewing.

Outside Eclipse Path

Fisherman's Trail, Portugal

Southwest Atlantic Coast, Portugal

The Fisherman's Trail along Portugal's southwest Atlantic coast is outside the eclipse path. The eclipse will be barely noticeable here. A wonderful coastal trail for other times of year.

Partial Eclipse Only

GR20, Corsica

Corsica, France

Corsica's legendary GR20 lies east of the totality path and receives only a partial eclipse. Not ideal for eclipse chasers, but still one of Europe's great mountain treks.

Outside Totality

Tuscany, Italy

Tuscany, Italy

Italy's Tuscany hiking trails \u2014 including the Via degli Dei, Chianti Classico, and Val d'Orcia \u2014 fall outside the totality zone. A partial eclipse will be visible but not a total event.

Outside Totality

Via Algarviana, Portugal

Southern Algarve, Portugal

The Via Algarviana through the southern Algarve is well outside the path of totality. If you plan a Portuguese trek for the eclipse, you would need to be much further north.

Planning Tips for Eclipse Hikers

When to Start Your Trek

The eclipse falls on August 12, 2026. If you book the 8-day Camino Francés from Sarria, you would ideally start between August 7–10 to ensure you are on the trail (between Sarria and O Pedrouzo) on eclipse day. Starting on August 8 places you near Melide or Palas de Rei on the 12th — right in the centre of the totality zone.

What to Bring

Certified solar eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2) are essential for watching the partial phases before and after totality. During the brief moments of totality itself, you can safely look at the corona with the naked eye — but only when the sun is completely covered. Never look directly at a partially eclipsed sun without proper eye protection.

Book Early

Accommodations in Galicia for mid-August 2026 are in extremely high demand due to the eclipse. Hikers who book through Bookatrekking.com get their lodging secured in advance, so you will have a confirmed bed waiting for you each evening — an important advantage during this busy period.

The Weather Factor

August in Galicia is generally warm and dry, with temperatures around 20–28°C. Cloud cover is always a possibility in this region, but statistically, mid-August offers some of the best weather of the year. An inland location like Melide or Palas de Rei typically has better conditions than the coast.

Don't miss this once-in-a-lifetime event. The next total solar eclipse visible from Spain won't happen until 2187. Browse all Camino treks →
