Itinerary

Day
1

Parking Estos - Renclusa Refuge

Duration: 06:10 h
Distance: 17.3 km
Ascent: 1060 m
Descent: 230 m

This route climbs steadily from the Benasque valley to the doorstep of the high Pyrenees. Starting among forests and pastures near the car park, it follows tracks and paths beside the river before turning onto wilder ground. The day is shaped by a continuous ascent from the valley floor to over 2100 metres, with views gradually opening over Plan de Senarta and the surrounding ridges.

From the parking area a wide track follows the valley, soon passing the waters of Embalse de Paso Nuevo. The route continues gently upstream through woodland and clearings to reach the open meadows and camping area of Plan de Senarta. Here the terrain becomes wilder as a marked path climbs beside the stream, crossing small footbridges and patches of pine forest while the surrounding peaks rise higher above the valley.

As height is gained the path steepens, winding across stony slopes and scattered boulders toward the head of the valley. A short detour leads to the shaded Cueva d'Alba, a cool pause before the final climb. The last section rises in zigzags to a shoulder at about 2136 metres, where the Renclusa refuge comes into view on a small terrace. Once inside, warm food, bunk rooms and a convivial atmosphere offer a comfortable end to the day.

Renclusa Refuge - Llauset Refuge

Duration: 06:30 h
Distance: 11.6 km
Ascent: 1040 m
Descent: 770 m

This high-level crossing links two alpine refuges over rough, remote ground. The itinerary climbs towards the ridges above the hut before dropping again to the basin of the Llauset lakes. With about 1,040 m of ascent and 770 m of descent, it is a demanding day in serious terrain, rewarded by continuous views of the Maladeta and Barrancs groups.

From the hut the trail climbs steeply on cairned paths towards the slopes of Tuca de la Renclusa, weaving between rocks and small tarns. Once on the upper benches, the route continues beneath the serrated crest that includes Tuca de Barrancs and the distant Pico Maldito. The path can be faint and crosses boulder fields where progress is slower and careful footwork is essential.

The traverse then turns south towards the high plateau dotted with the Ibones de Anglios. After skirting these lakes, a final undulating section leads to the outlet of the Estany de Llauset, with Cap de Llauset rising above. A short, steep climb on a good path brings the day to an end at the modern lakeside refuge, well equipped for a restorative evening.

Llauset Refuge - Refugio de Estos

Duration: 09:40 h
Distance: 26.3 km
Ascent: 980 m
Descent: 1520 m

This long and varied mountain stage links the high cirque around Llauset Refuge with the forests and meadows of the Estos valley. It starts in a rocky, alpine setting among lakes and bare ridges, then gradually descends into gentler terrain. Along the way the route visits quiet tarns and wide plateaus before reaching the tree line, where streams, pastures and scattered pines lead towards the more sheltered surroundings near the final refuge.

From the hut a clear path skirts above the Llauset reservoir and heads towards the Ibón Bajo de Vallibierna, a beautiful high mountain lake surrounded by granite blocks. The trail then climbs briefly to a rounded col near La Cruz before beginning a long descent across Plana Llarga. Here wide grassy flats give way to forest tracks and narrower paths that lose height steadily towards the valley and the blue waters of Embalse de Paso Nuevo.

After passing the reservoir the route follows easier undulating paths beside the river, with occasional short climbs through mixed woodland and open clearings. The final section winds gently into the side valley where the Estos stream tumbles over rocks and small cascades. Refugio de Estos appears on a natural terrace above the water, its stone walls and terrace offering a welcoming stop for rest, dinner and a well-earned night’s sleep.

Refugio de Estós - Refugio de Viadós

Duration: 05:25 h
Distance: 11.2 km
Ascent: 720 m
Descent: 860 m

From the stone refuge in the Estós Valley, this challenging route ascends to the high Puerto de Chistau Pass (2,572 m) to later descend into the secluded Gistaín Valley, where the welcoming Viadós Hut awaits. Throughout the day, views open up to the surrounding 3,000-metre peaks and wild hanging valleys.

From the Refugio de Estós, the route ascends along a clear path into the upper valley and soon gets close to the impressive Cascada de Clarabide waterfall. Steeper trails lead to port of Chistau and on to a traverse under the rocky flanks of Pico Chistau (2,794 m). Enjoy the spectacular views of Posets and the Clarabide peaks as you reach the high altitude watershed. Beyond the pass, the trail drops onto stony downhill slopes towards the Pleta de Añes Cruces.

You will pass the simple Cabane d'Anescruses, while the path eases into grassy pastures and forest, crossing streams and old shepherd terraces. Then, you will join a track above the Río Cinqueta walking towards the hut. On the way, enjoy views towards both Barranco del Milá y Barranco de Añés. A final gentle descent will bring you to the Refugio de Viadós, which is set among traditional bordas and meadows. Here, you can enjoy a hot meal and a rest before the next day

Refugio de Viadós - Refugio Ángel Orús

Duration: 06:10 h
Distance: 11 km
Ascent: 1130 m
Descent: 750 m

This challenging mountain route takes you from the lush pastures surrounding the Refugio de Viadós to the picturesque location of the Refugio Ángel Orús. Along the way, you will visit high lakes and pass through a panoramic pass between the Posets and Eriste massifs. Expect steep, rocky paths, long ascents and sweeping views of soaring peaks.

The path crosses several barranco streams and climbs steadily through forests and meadows before emerging from the trees and continuing along open slopes beneath the northern buttresses of Posets. Next, a clear mountain trail follows the Barranco de la Ribereta, passing relatively close to the Millares waterfall and some shepherd's huts. The path then steepens, becoming more challenging as it winds its way through flowery meadows and rocky steps towards Forqueta Pass, the highest point of the day at 2,840 metres. From here, it descends to the cirque that holds the beautiful Ibón de Lardaneta lake, situated at an altitude of 2,676 metres.

Skirting the lake's shore, the route continues downwards across broken terrain, running parallel to the Torrent de la Ribereta in the namelike valley. After crossing a metal bridge, a rough descent on narrow switchbacks begins. Later, the view opens up and the path becomes gentler, leading directly to the Refugio Ángel Orús via grassy and dwarf pine terraces. Take time to enjoy the terrace and its views of the surrounding peaks.

Refugio Ángel Orús - Parking Estós

Duration: 05:20 h
Distance: 15.2 km
Ascent: 240 m
Descent: 1030 m

This closing mountain stage leads from the high perch of Refugio Ángel Orús back to the valley and the trailhead at Parking Estós. The day is dominated by a long descent from rocky, alpine surroundings into forests and pastures, followed by an easier walk along the valley floor. Views open over the Posets group and later towards the villages around Benasque, offering a final chance to enjoy the scenery before leaving the high mountains.

From the hut a marked path immediately starts descending in tight zigzags over rocky ground. For almost three kilometres the trail crosses steep slabs and loose stones, forming a technical section where sure-footedness and dry conditions are important. Once past this, the route becomes easier, following a clearer path beside the stream into the Eriste valley. Forests, small waterfalls and scattered clearings accompany the descent as the path approaches the first tracks and eventually the road near the reservoir.

The final part of the day follows quieter paths and tracks along the valley, often close to the river, with gentle undulations and views towards Benasque. A turn into the side valley of Estós leads through woodland and meadows, gaining height gradually on a gravel road. Signposts for the refuge and valley mark the approach to Parking Estós, where the route ends beside the information boards and parked cars.
