Bagà - Refugi Sant Jordi

Duration: 04:00 h
Distance: 10 km
Ascent: 830 m
Descent: 60 m

Welcome to these rugged limestone mountains, where the route quickly swaps the streets of Bagà for quiet forest and riverside paths. The walk begins gently along the valley before climbing into wilder scenery, with airy balcony sections protected by wooden railings and shaded green tunnels of trees. Rustic bridges over small streams and clearings with views back to the valley make this an enjoyable and varied introduction to the area, ending at a welcoming mountain refuge.

The path follows the Riu Bastareny on soft forest tracks and narrow balcony trails, passing wooden walkways and viewpoints above the river. It continues through the meadows of Camp de Cabrera and along Costa de Vigros before skirting La Torre de Santa Magdalena and reaching Refugi Vents del Cadí. From here the trail steepens, winding through the rocky narrows of Els Empedrats and Estret d'Escru, then climbing steadily towards the open pastures of the Vall de Pendís.

At the head of the valley a final short ascent leads to Refugi Sant Jordi, tucked among pines above the surrounding slopes. The stone building offers simple dormitories, a cosy dining room and hearty meals, with water available outside. From the terrace you can look back over the forests and meadows walked during the day and enjoy a relaxed evening before continuing deeper into the mountains.

Refugi Sant Jordi - Refugi Prat d'Aguiló

Duration: 04:43 h
Distance: 10.4 km
Ascent: 780 m
Descent: 350 m

From Refugi Sant Jordi this route climbs quickly out of the forest to reach the airy limestone crest of the Cadí range. Gentle meadow paths soon give way to rockier traverses, rewarded with ever-wider views over the Cerdanya valley and the surrounding summits. Between sections of pine forest and open scree, the journey feels wild yet never too technical, linking two iconic refuges on a beautiful balcony line high above the northern slopes.

From the hut the path rises through cool pine woods to the Tallat de Roques, where the forest thins and the limestone walls of Cadí appear close at hand. You follow a well marked section of Cavalls del Vent across the Serrat de la Muga, alternating between soft needle covered paths and rougher stony traverses, before the terrain eases into the grassy hollow of Prat Rodó and the broad saddle of Pla de les Creus.

Beyond the saddle a final rising traverse under grey cliffs brings you to the wide pastures of Prat d'Aguiló. The refuge appears suddenly on a grassy platform at the foot of the north face of the Cadí ridge, with superb views across Cerdanya. Inside you find shared dormitories, hot showers when available and a friendly dining room where walkers gather, making it an ideal place to rest before continuing the traverse.

Refugi Prat d'Aguiló - Refugi Gresolet

Duration: 04:35 h
Distance: 8.9 km
Ascent: 540 m
Descent: 1300 m

Leaving the high meadows around Refugi Prat d'Aguiló, this section begins with a steady climb to the panoramic crest of the Cadí range, then drops dramatically into the deep Gresolet valley. Rocky shepherd paths and airy traverses give way to long forest descents, with constant views of the Pedraforca massif. It is a short but demanding journey, with one main ascent to the ridge followed by an extended descent through changing alpine and woodland scenery.

From the refuge a stony path climbs in zigzags beneath Comabona, reaching the karst hollow of Clot de Tancalaporta on the main crest. You follow a balcony line over Cap dels Camps, with wide views to Cerdanya and Pedraforca, before the trail plunges down steep zigzags on scree and then softer forest paths, steadily losing height towards the shaded Gresolet valley.

At the valley floor the path joins a wider track beside the stream and soon reaches Refugi Gresolet, set in a forest clearing beneath the cliffs of Pedraforca. The building offers dormitory bunks, hot meals and a welcoming common room, with a terrace that catches the evening light. It is a peaceful place to recover after the long descent and prepare for the final day of walking.

Refugi Gresolet - Bagà

Duration: 05:20 h
Distance: 14.9 km
Ascent: 380 m
Descent: 830 m

This final stretch gently leaves the dense forest around Refugi Gresolet and follows easier tracks back towards civilisation. After a last climb to a broad shoulder, the route settles into a long descent through pines and meadows, with frequent views of the surrounding ridges. Gradually the high mountains fall behind and the valley widens, leading you along riverside paths to the medieval streets and warm atmosphere of Bagà.

From the refuge a path contours through pine forest before dropping to the stream in the Baga de Gresolet. A steady climb follows on stony tracks, rejoining the Cavalls del Vent and rising to the open shoulder below El Puig de Bagà, the last notable ascent of the journey. Wide views open back to Pedraforca and the cliffs of Cadí before the path bends into the long valley that leads towards Bagà.

The descent continues on forest tracks and quieter paths along the Riu Bastareny, passing the buildings of l’Hostalet and Refugi Vents del Cadí. Beyond here the trail becomes broader and more relaxed, soon meeting the first houses and fields above the village. A final riverside promenade brings you into the old centre of Bagà, where the lively square and cosy cafés offer a fitting spot to mark the end of your journey. Well done, you made it!
