Cauterets - Chalet du Clot

Duration: 03:05 h
Distance: 8.93 km
Ascent: 680 m
Descent: 90 m

Your GR10 adventure begins in the charming spa town of Cauterets. The trail leads you along forested paths and thundering waterfalls as you make your way deeper into the Pyrenees. Gradually, the terrain opens up to reveal alpine meadows framed by rugged peaks.

This first stage is an ideal warm-up, with around 680 meters of ascent. The climb is steady and rewarding, offering constant views and a true sense of progress. Marmots and chamois are often spotted in the higher meadows, adding a touch of wilderness to your day.

Arriving at the rustic Chalet du Clot, enjoy a hearty mountain dinner and the peaceful sound of nearby cascades before settling in for a restful night in the heart of the Pyrenees.

Chalet du Clot - Refuge Wallon Marcadau (long route)

Duration: 07:10 h
Distance: 18.2 km
Ascent: 1190 m
Descent: 850 m

This route is a longer alternative past Col des Mulets, with more elevation gain and a wilder feel than the valley shortcut. From the forest around Chalet du Clot you follow the Marcadau upstream and soon leave the easier paths behind. Peaks like Pic de Gaube 2377 m and Pic Mayouret 2688 m rise above the valley, giving the day a high mountain flavour before you even start climbing towards the pass.

From the valley track you turn south near Pont d'Espagne and climb through pine forest towards Lac de Gaube. The path steepens as you reach the shore, then follows the lake past turquoise water and cliffs that drop straight in. Beyond the far end a rougher trail tackles broken slopes, with loose rock and sections where the line is less obvious. Tight zigzags haul you up to Col des Mulets 2591 m, the most demanding part of the day.

From the pass a stony descent leads into a hanging valley and then back towards the Marcadau. Gradually the path softens, grass replaces boulders and the murmur of the river grows louder. Soon the stone buildings of the refuge appear on a low rise above the water. After such a big circuit the terrace feels like a small island of comfort, perfect for kicking off boots and settling into the easy evening rhythm.

Refuge Wallon Marcadau - Chalet du Clot (Short)

Duration: 02:05 h
Distance: 7 km
Ascent: 10 m
Descent: 340 m

This stage features a short, peaceful descent through one of the most beautiful valleys in the Pyrenees. Starting at the Refuge du Wallon-Marcadau, the clearly marked route follows the Gave du Marcadau river downstream through a valley filled with pine forests and alpine meadows.

Today, you can take your time to enjoy the surroundings without expending too much effort. Keep an ear out for marmot whistles and look out for wildflowers and birds of prey soaring overhead. Scenic wooden bridges can be seen along the way. This stage provides a refreshing change of pace and is ideal for resting your legs after the previous day's alpine adventure.

Upon reaching the plateau where the Chalet du Clot is located, you will find familiar comforts and another chance to unwind. Enjoy a quiet evening, perhaps with a stroll around the area or a drink on the terrace, safe in the knowledge that the final leg to Cauterets awaits you tomorrow.

Chalet du Clot - Cauterets

Duration: 02:45 h
Distance: 8.87 km

The final walk brings a gradual return to the valley and a familiar world. The mountains slowly step back, giving space to forests and flowing water.

The route follows easy paths through woodland and along streams, mostly descending with occasional open views back toward the higher peaks. It is comfortable walking that allows time to look back and take it all in.

Arrival in Cauterets feels lively and satisfying. After days in the mountains, cafés, terraces and warm showers mark a smooth and well-earned finish.
