The Cauterets Traverse is a 5-day, hut-to-hut trekking adventure designed for beginners in the Pyrenees National Park. This route is designed for those new to mountain hiking who are eager to experience it for the first time. You will follow trails from the charming town of Cauterets into the high mountains, crossing peaceful valleys and dramatic terrain without encountering any technical challenges.

Each night, you will stay in traditional huts and chalets, which offer breathtaking surroundings and warm hospitality. Expect glacier views, cascading streams, and the soothing rhythm of nature. This is the perfect introduction to Pyrenean trekking: accessible yet unforgettable.

Cauterets - Chalet du Clot

Your adventure begins in the charming spa town of Cauterets. As you journey deeper into the Pyrenees, the trail takes you through green forests and alongside thundering waterfalls. Finally, the terrain opens up to reveal alpine meadows framed by distant mountain peaks.

After a short zigzag section, walk along the Chemin des Pères for a couple of kilometres as you ascend. Then, cross the bridge over the Gave de Lutour and continue downstream to La Raillère. Keep climbing along a path dotted with waterfalls in the Val de Jéret, alongside the Gave du Marcadau stream. You will see cascades such as Cerisey, Pouey Bacou, Pas de l'Ours or Boussès.

Once you reach the Pont d'Espagne waterfall, next to a restaurant and not far from the Gaube chairlift station, take a moment to enjoy the stunning views. Then follow the path for a final push to reach tonight's hut. When you arrive at the Chalet du Clot, enjoy a hearty dinner before settling in for a restful night in the Pyrenees.

Chalet du Clot - Refuge Oulettes de Gaube

After a restful night at the chalet, your trek will continue south towards one of the most scenic spots in the Pyrenees. The route steadily climbs along a clearly marked trail winding through alpine forests, open meadows and rocky terrain, providing superb vistas at every turn. An ideal challenge for those looking to build their confidence in the mountains.

Return to Pont d'Espagne and follow the wooded path to Lake Gaube. Here, you can enjoy a short break at the restaurant or simply take in the views. Continue along the path around the lake, then follow the rocky trail running alongside the meandering glacial stream, surrounded by lush vegetation. Enjoy the impressive Esplumouse waterfall and the stunning vistas of the Vignemale massif that follow. Keep an eye out for marmots sunning themselves on the rocks and griffon vultures soaring overhead.

As you approach the Refuge des Oulettes de Gaube (2,151 m), the path opens up to reveal a wide glacial cirque directly beneath the dramatic north face of the Vignemale mountain. It's a truly inspiring place to end your day. More adventures await tomorrow!

Refuge Oulettes de Gaube - Refuge Wallon Marcadau

Starting from the stunning glacial amphitheatre beneath the Vignemale mountain, you will begin an intense ascent into Spain before heading back to France to descend to tonight's hut.

After a few kilometres, you will climb a rocky path to reach the Col des Mulets (2,591 m), which marks the French–Spanish border. In the process, you will gain more than 400 metres in altitude. Then, cross the bowl-shaped Circo del Ara and make your way up to the second highest point of the day: Col d'Arratille (2,528 metres), which also marks the border between the two countries. Take a break at the top to enjoy the views of the lake and the extensive Marcadau Valley below. Then begin a long descent, passing another lake and crossing streams as you notice how the landscape becomes increasingly green and wooded.

When you arrive at the Refuge du Wallon-Marcadau, nestled at the confluence of mountain streams, you can relax on the sunny terrace and take in the incredible views. Here, you can fully experience the peaceful, remote aura of the Pyrenees and their rich, serene landscapes.

Refuge Wallon Marcadau - Chalet du Clot

This stage features a short, peaceful descent through one of the most beautiful valleys in the Pyrenees. Starting at the Refuge du Wallon-Marcadau, the clearly marked route follows the Gave du Marcadau river downstream through a valley filled with pine forests and alpine meadows.

Today, you can take your time to enjoy the surroundings without expending too much effort. Keep an ear out for marmot whistles and look out for wildflowers and birds of prey soaring overhead. Scenic wooden bridges can be seen along the way. This stage provides a refreshing change of pace and is ideal for resting your legs after the previous day's alpine adventure.

Upon reaching the plateau where the Chalet du Clot is located, you will find familiar comforts and another chance to unwind. Enjoy a quiet evening, perhaps with a stroll around the area or a drink on the terrace, safe in the knowledge that the final leg to Cauterets awaits you tomorrow.

Chalet du Clot - Cauterets

Your final day on the trail begins with a peaceful descent from the Chalet du Clot towards the valley and the town of Cauterets. You will retrace the same scenic section that you hiked on day one, but this time in reverse with gravity on your side.

Following the Gave du Marcadau river downstream, the trail takes you past cascading waterfalls, lush pine forests and familiar viewpoints. The descent is steady and never too steep, providing a gentle farewell to the mountains.

Arriving back in Cauterets, you will have completed your adventure. Whether you choose to celebrate with a warm meal, a visit to the town’s famous thermal baths or a stroll through its picturesque streets, this final stage brings your Pyrenean journey to a satisfying conclusion.

    During your Cauterets, you will spend your nights in mountain huts. In the mountain huts we normally only book dormitories, but we can look into private rooms on request. If the private rooms are fully booked or not available in the hut, we automatically book a bed in dormitories for you. Please note that private rooms are more expensive and there will be an additional charge for this.

  • Half-board in Huts

    Accommodation at the huts includes dinner and breakfast. We will arrange this for you as well. This allows you to travel lighter and have one less thing to worry about. Bear in mind that lunch is not included, but it can be purchased at the huts. Here you can also buy an array of snacks and bottled water.

  • Navigation support

    Our trekking app also includes built-in navigation support. With GPS-based maps and offline access, you can follow the trail confidently and stay on route even without mobile signal.

    You have to make your own way to the starting point. The total amount does not include personal transport.

  • Transfers

    Should you need any form of (public) transport on location, this is not part of the trekking package. This includes the use of taxi, bus, cable cars, gondolas, ferries, etc.

  • Lunch

    Half-board is included in the price of this trek. Lunch, however, is not. You can get something to eat at the mountain huts along the way.

  • Travel Insurance

    Your international travel insurance is your own responsibility. Discuss your itinerary with the insurance company before your trek.

  • Personal expenses

    Personal expenses on such as souvenirs, drinks, and other similar expenses are for your own account.
