1

Cauterets - Refuge d'Ilhéou

Duration: 03:25 h
Distance: 7.82 km
Ascent: 1040 m

The journey begins gently from the lively streets of Cauterets and quickly slips into a greener, quieter world. Forest paths, flowing water and a steady sense of ascent mark the beginning. It feels approachable, but the mountains make it clear you are leaving the valley behind.

The trail follows the Gave de Cambasque, passing the Gave de Cambasque waterfall and higher viewpoints over the Ilhéou waterfalls. As the path climbs, trees thin out and open slopes appear. Near Black Lake, the scenery turns more alpine, with wider views and a feeling of space.

The refuge lies beside the calm waters of Lac d’Ilhéou, surrounded by high ground. It is a beautiful first mountain stop, where the day ends quietly with reflections on the lake and the peaks above.

Refuge d'Ilhéou - Refuge Wallon-Marcadau

Duration: 04:10 h
Distance: 10.1 km
Ascent: 600 m
Descent: 750 m

This is a varied and rewarding mountain day, with a real sense of movement through changing landscapes. From the first steps, the terrain feels more open and the views stretch further with every climb.

A steady ascent leads to the Col de Haugade Supérieur, where the world suddenly opens up. The path then weaves past the Embarrat Lakes, Lac du Pourtet and Lake Nère, each with its own colour and mood. Ancient pine trees mark the transition back into forest, adding shade and texture to the route.

The refuge sits peacefully in the Marcadau valley, surrounded by grass, water and wide skies. It is a welcoming place to rest, with the feeling of being properly settled in the mountains.

Refuge Wallon Marcadau - Chalet du Clot

Duration: 07:00 h
Distance: 18.3 km
Ascent: 850 m
Descent: 1190 m

This is the tougher option for today, a full mountain day that rewards strong legs with blue lakes, airy ridges and big Pyrenean views. If weather, tired knees or just your mood ask for something gentler, there is also the shorter valley path between the two refuges, taking roughly two hours. Choose the path that fits your day; both end at the same cosy hut.

From the refuge you follow the river briefly, then swing uphill on stony zigzags into wilder ground. The path climbs from about 1 800 metres to high tarns scattered beneath granite walls, passing the Opales lakes and the broad Cambalès plateau. Near the day’s high point, just over 2 500 metres, the view opens towards the Vignemale group at 3 298 metres and back into the Marcadau bowl, a panorama that makes every step of the climb worth it.

A long descent then winds past smaller tarns, waterfalls and finally into thicker forest. The air is gently getting warmer and the trail eases onto the open pastures of the plateau du Clot, where the wooden buildings of Chalet du Clot sit above the valley like a balcony. Drop your pack, claim a spot on the terrace and watch the evening light creep back up to the high lakes you crossed earlier.

Chalet du Clot - Cauterets

Duration: 02:45 h
Distance: 8.87 km
Ascent: 90 m
Descent: 670 m

The final walk brings a gradual return to the valley and a familiar world. The mountains slowly step back, giving space to forests and flowing water.

The route follows easy paths through woodland and along streams, mostly descending with occasional open views back toward the higher peaks. It is comfortable walking that allows time to look back and take it all in.

Arrival in Cauterets feels lively and satisfying. After days in the mountains, cafés, terraces and warm showers mark a smooth and well-earned finish.
