> Hike a green valley from Switzerland into wild Italy
> Spend your nights in cozy mountain rifugios
> Let us handle the hut bookings, you just hike

You step out of the cable car and into a world of contrast. Behind you, Switzerland’s tidy perfection. In front, Italy’s wild charm. You’re surrounded by green slopes and alpine silence except for the whistle of marmots. It feels like crossing into a different world on foot. Four days of light hiking, rifugio hospitality, and high-mountain views await. And you don’t even need to carry a tent.

The Val Formazza Beginner Tour is made for those who want to step into the high Alps without jumping into the deep end. You’ll start and finish in Ulrichen, Switzerland, and in between hike to three classic mountain huts across the border in Italy. Expect quiet trails, sweeping views, turquoise lakes like Toggia and Morasco, and even a dam crossing. Oh, and one day with a bit of a climb but you’ve got this.

Itinerary

Day
1

Altstafel Mountain Station - Capanna Corno Gries

Duration: 02:45 h
Distance: 6.09 km / 3.8mi
Ascent: 570 m / 1870ft
Descent: 230 m / 755ft

The day starts high above Ulrichen, where the cable car drops you straight into a sea of green slopes and easy-going paths. The mountains still feel friendly here, with wide views and soft terrain that lets you get used to the altitude. As you move deeper into the valley, Nufenenstock and its neighbours watch over the route, while small streams and patches of rock add just enough mountain spice.

From the mountain station a clear trail traverses across grassy hillsides, never too steep, winding in and out of shallow gullies. The path slowly gains about 500 metres in height, giving more and more views towards the Gries area and the reservoir below. The terrain stays mostly gentle, with a few rockier steps to keep things interesting, and plenty of spots to pause, breathe and look back over the wide Valais landscape.

Near the end the trail eases off and rolls over a last shoulder, revealing Capanna Corno Gries tucked on its open plateau. A short descent leads to the hut terrace, where you can drop your pack, grab a drink and let the late-afternoon light sweep over the surrounding ridges. It feels like a small island of comfort in the middle of high country, the perfect place to spend your first night out.

Capanna Corno Gries - Rifugio Maria Luisa

Duration: 02:55 h
Distance: 9.04 km / 5.6mi
Ascent: 140 m / 459ft
Descent: 300 m / 984ft

From the high plateau around Capanna Corno Gries the route feels more alpine yet still welcoming. A narrow path leads towards the Italian border, with wide views over Val Corno and surrounding peaks like Kleines Grieshorn. After crossing Passo di San Giacomo the landscape softens and the blue mirror of Lake Toggia pulls you in, with Rifugio Maria Luisa waiting nearby for a relaxed evening.

The walk begins with a traverse on small, sometimes airy paths above the valley. The track is never technical, but a steep drop beside the trail asks for steady feet and unhurried steps. Closer to the pass the terrain becomes broader and more forgiving, following gentle grassy slopes and old mule tracks. At Passo di San Giacomo you cross into Italy and suddenly the basin of Lake Toggia opens up below.

From the pass an easy descent winds down about 300 metres on comfortable tracks, passing streams and low rock walls. The path curls around the shore of Lake Toggia, giving plenty of excuses to pause for photos or a quick snack by the water. A final short rise leads to Rifugio Maria Luisa, tucked above the lake, where hot meals, cosy rooms and a friendly buzz of hikers round off the afternoon.

Rifugio Maria Luisa - Rifugio Città di Busto

Duration: 04:17 h
Distance: 9.56 km / 5.9 mi
Ascent: 750 m / 2461 ft
Descent: 460 m / 1509 ft

This section feels like the mountains turn up the volume. The air gets thinner, the horizon wider, and the legs notice the altitude, especially during the final climb. From one high balcony to the next, the route strings together quiet huts, bright lakes and sweeping views of the Formazza valley, with Lake Morasco shining as the turquoise heart of the day.

From the hut a clear path contours across grassy slopes, soon reaching the quiet mirror of Valgeis Pond, an inviting first rest. The track continues past Rifugio Bim Se al Lago onto a balcony terrace where the whole Morasco valley opens below. Here the trail drops about 200 metres to the dam of Lake Morasco, then follows easy lakeside tracks along its bright shoreline to the far end of the water.

Beyond the lake the mood shifts from gentle to determined. A steady zigzagging climb of roughly 600 metres leads through pastures and rockier ground, with every pause rewarded by a grander view of Lake Morasco and the surrounding peaks. The last metres roll out almost lazily to Rifugio Città di Busto, perched on its ledge, where a hot drink and wide windows make the altitude effort feel more than worth it.

Rifugio Città di Busto - Altstafel Mountain Station

Duration: 03:25 h
Distance: 8.08 km / 5mi
Ascent: 280 m / 919ft
Descent: 750 m / 2461ft

The final stretch feels like a victory lap through high country. From the balcony of Rifugio Città di Busto you wander past rock and grass, with Lago Morasco glimmering below and peaks like Nufenenstock and Kleines Grieshorn on the skyline. Bit by bit the route turns from wild to gentle, swapping rough slopes for softer meadows as you move back towards the cable car and the valley.

The path starts with an easy traverse and then drops steadily towards Lago Morasco, where a solid dam guides you across the water with big views up and down the valley. Beyond the lake the trail climbs once more to a wide plateau with a second reservoir and a real high alpine feel. From here a long, friendly descent follows good paths and tracks, winding past streams and grassy terraces towards the roof of the cable car station.

Arriving at Altstafel the noise of the valleys still feels far away. You can sit for a moment, look back at the reservoir and the line you walked, and let it all sink in. Then it is time to float back to Ulrichen by cable car, legs humming, pockets full of new stories from the mountains.
