Close your eyes and picture this: a path curving along chalky cliffs, a breeze rolling in from the Channel, and the distant sound of gulls as you look out over the sea. You're walking the Côte d’Opale, where France stares straight at England and history whispers from the bunkers, lighthouses, and fishing villages along the way. The trail takes you from Cap Blanc-Nez to Cap Gris-Nez and finally into the old town of Boulogne-sur-Mer. The views are never boring, the seafood always fresh, and the walking well, that's just pure coastal magic.

This is a 5-day trek, with 3 full walking stages and accommodation before and after. It starts in Calais and ends in Boulogne-sur-Mer, perfect for a long weekend escape or a refreshing break from city life. You carry your own backpack light and ready and we take care of your overnight stays in charming guesthouses along the way.

Arrival in Calais

Arriving in Calais brings a salty breeze, wide skies and the steady rhythm of the sea. The town feels open and bright, a place where the coastline already hints at the days ahead. It is the perfect moment to settle in and slow your step.

A short wander along the promenade or into the old streets brings the mix of cafés, harbour sounds and tall lighthouse views. The beaches stretch far and the evening light can be soft and golden. Everything invites you to relax and take in the coast.

Your accommodation sits close to the centre, an easy base for the night. It is a gentle place to rest before setting off into the cliffs and dunes of the Opal Coast.

Calais (Cap Blanc-Nez) - Wissant

You leave Calais with the sea beside you and the long sweep of the cliffs ahead. The path rises gently toward the high chalk plateau where the wind carries the smell of salt and grass. Cap Blanc Nez soon stands bright above the water, its white face glowing in the sun.

The climb to the top brings wide views over England on a clear day and the endless green slopes of the coast. From the plateau the trail drops softly into open fields, dunes and winding beaches. Gulls glide overhead while the shoreline bends slowly toward Wissant.

The final stretch leads you into the quiet streets of the village where your accommodation waits. It is a peaceful spot to unwind and enjoy the relaxed rhythm of this sheltered bay.

Wissant -Ambleteuse (via Cap Gris-Nez)

The morning begins with soft light over the bay as you follow the sand toward the headland. The cliffs rise gently and the sea shifts from deep blue to silver. It feels like walking along the edge of something wild and calm at the same time.

The trail climbs toward Cap Gris Nez where the headland stands low and powerful above the water. Views open across the Channel and you can often see ships tracing slow lines below. The descent crosses grassy slopes and rocky stretches shaped by tide and wind.

As you near Ambleteuse the old fort appears beside the river mouth. Your accommodation sits in the quiet heart of the village, a comfortable place to settle after a day of open coast and shifting light.

Ambleteuse - Boulogne-sur-Mer

You leave Ambleteuse with the sound of waves echoing between the fort and the beach. The coast stretches wide and rugged as the path bends south. Slowly the cliffs grow higher and the scenery gains a gentle wildness.

The route leads through dunes, low cliffs and grassy terraces with views toward Wimereux and the distant harbour skyline. Small paths weave between heather patches and sandy tracks shaped by the wind. As you approach the city the coastline becomes steeper and the sea feels close again.

Boulogne sur Mer welcomes you with its long promenade and the upper town perched above. Your accommodation lies nearby, a relaxed place to end the journey and enjoy the last evening by the sea.

Departure from Boulogne-sur-Mer

The last morning arrives with the soft hum of the harbour and the steady swell of the tide. Boulogne sur Mer feels unhurried and bright, giving you one more moment to enjoy the coast before travelling on.

A gentle stroll along the promenade or into the old upper town brings warm colours, narrow lanes and wide sea views. Fishermen prepare their boats while cafés slowly open, adding a cosy rhythm to the morning.

When it is time to leave, you make your own way from the accommodation. The coastline lingers in your thoughts as you say goodbye to the Opal Coast.

In those cases, you can usually request breakfast for the next morning directly at the accommodation (at your own expense), or simply enjoy one of the cafés in the area.

    You have to make your own way to the starting point. The total amount does not include personal transport. This also applies to any transport from the end point of your trail.

  • Transfers

    If you require any form of public or local transport during the trek, it is not included in the package unless stated otherwise. This applies to taxis, buses, cable cars, gondolas, and similar services.

  • Travel Insurance

    Your international travel insurance is your own responsibility. Discuss your itinerary with the insurance company before your trek.

  • Lunch and Dinner

    Breakfast is, if possible, included in the price of the trek. You can get lunch and dinner at the shops, hotels, and restaurants along the way.
