This 5-day package is made for experienced hikers who want a challenge. You’ll start at Refuge Agnel, just under the Col Vieux, and hike through the heart of the Queyras all the way to Château-Ville-Vieille. Saint-Véran – Refuge Agnel

Duration: 05:00 h
Distance: 12.6 km
Ascent: 920 m
Descent: 360 m

Your trek begins in the high mountain village of Saint-Véran, where stone houses and narrow streets quickly give way to open alpine terrain. The stage feels serious from the start, climbing steadily into a rugged landscape where altitude and exposure define the day.

The route ascends through wide valleys and rocky slopes toward the Col de Chamoussière at 2884 metres. As height is gained, views expand across the surrounding peaks. A short detour allows a climb of Monte Pelvo, an accessible summit offering impressive panoramas. The terrain remains open and demanding, requiring steady footing and concentration.

A gentle descent leads to Refuge Agnel, set high at 2580 metres near the Italian border. The refuge sits in a stark, mineral landscape, perfect for a short rest or longer stay. With big skies and quiet surroundings, this is a true high-mountain finish.

Refuge Agnel – Gîte de La Monta

Duration: 05:00 h
Distance: 12.9 km
Ascent: 270 m
Descent: 1170 m

This stage shifts from high alpine terrain to a gentler rhythm, but the descent is long and continuous. Leaving Refuge Agnel behind, the landscape gradually softens as you move away from the highest ground.

The trail passes striking rock formations before reaching the remote Lac de Foréant at 2618 metres, often lingering with snow early in the season. Shortly after, Lac Egorgéou appears below, a quieter spot tucked beneath steep slopes. From here, the route descends steadily through open terrain and pastures toward the valley.

The stage ends at Gîte de la Monta or Gîte 7 Degrés Est, both set around 1750 metres. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with stone buildings and a strong mountain character. It is a comfortable and well-earned stop after a long descent.

Gîte de La Monta – Gîte Edelweiss

Duration: 06:35 h
Distance: 16.1 km
Ascent: 930 m
Descent: 1050 m

This is one of the most demanding stages of the trek, combining length, elevation and exposure. Leaving the valley behind, the route climbs back into high terrain with a real sense of commitment.

The ascent begins through larch forest, where morning light filters through the trees. Higher up, the trail reaches the Gilly ridges, an airy section above 2500 metres with wide, uninterrupted views. A short detour leads to La Lauzière at 2653 metres, followed by the Collette de Gilly at 2366 metres. The terrain is open and exposed, requiring focus.

The descent leads to Gîte Ancolie Bleue or Gîte Edelweiss, set lower in the valley. After such a long and intense day, the quiet setting and simple comfort feel especially rewarding.
