Arrival in Arnhem

You arrive in a city where river, bridges and parks all sit close together. After the journey there is time to slow down: check in, drop your bag and feel out the neighbourhood. A short wander through the centre or along the Rhine already loosens legs and mind. It is that pleasant in between moment, no real plans yet, but the promise of forest and heath just up the hill.

If you fancy a first stretch, head towards Sonsbeek Park and the White Watermill. Streams, ponds and tall trees give a quick preview of the rolling landscape outside town. The mill works as both café and information point, so you can pick up a drink and some inspiration. Then it is an easy stroll back through the park, letting the last travel stress slip away.

Back at your accommodation you unpack at your own pace and lay out tomorrow’s gear. Dinner can be something simple in a side street or a relaxed meal on a terrace. With the window on a crack you hear the city hum softening while you scan the route. It already feels like you are on the way, even though the real walking starts tomorrow.

Arnhem - Hoenderloo

Duration: 06:00 h
Distance: 23.4 km
Ascent: 100 m
Descent: 70 m

From the river city the route quickly trades stone for green, climbing out through parks, suburbs and finally the forests of the national park. A gentle rise carries you past war history, quiet avenues and wide heath onto the sandy plateau of the Hoge Veluwe. Views open over dunes and purple heather while benches hide in small patches of shade. The last stretch through woodland and past scattered houses leads to a relaxed village between the trees.

From the centre you head for Sonsbeek Park and the White Watermill, following shady paths along streams and ponds. Gradually the city slips away and you continue on quieter roads and tracks to the Arnhem War Museum, where Operation Market Garden is still very present. Beyond this point woodland takes over, guiding you along a scenic path into the Hoge Veluwe National Park.

Inside the park you wander between forest, open heath and sandy dunes, passing viewpoints over the plains and a bench with a wide look across the heathland. A section of drifting sand gives the feeling of walking through a small desert. Later the route leaves the park and follows calmer lanes toward a village known for the Heldring well. Here you find your accommodation tucked between trees, cafés and holiday houses.

Hoenderloo - Lunteren

Duration: 06:11 h
Distance: 24.3 km
Ascent: 50 m
Descent: 80 m

This route links a forest village with the sandy heights and historic fields around Lunteren. You move from shaded tracks and elegant architecture to open plains of drifting sand, then on toward the symbolic centre of the country. Heath, woodland and farmland take turns in the landscape. The final part follows gentle ridges to a small town where a classic inn and lookout tower mark the end of the line.

From the heart of the village you pass the Heldring well and step back into the woods, heading for the Sint Hubertus hunting lodge beside the water. The Kronkelweg leads you past the Pump House and eventually out of the park area toward Otterlo, where De Waldhoorn is a natural pause for something to eat or drink. Beyond the village the world becomes quiet again as you cross into the Wekeromse Sand.

Here the trail weaves between forest and open sand, with viewpoints over the plains and information panels about drifting dunes and the Celtic fields of the Raatakkers. Later you climb gently onto the Goudsberg plateau, where a monument and lake mark the middle of the Netherlands and the geographic centre sits nearby. The Hessenhut tower offers one last panorama before you descend toward Lunteren. Streets guide you to a cosy inn or hotel where the route finally comes to rest.

Departure from Lunteren

The final day is all about heading home at an easy pace. Walking is done, so the only plan is to eat, pack and travel. Breakfast feels a little different now, with memories of forest, sand and heath quietly replaying. There is no real rush, just that soft slide from trail rhythm back toward everyday life. It is a gentle landing instead of a hard stop.

After breakfast you pack your bag one last time, check the room and hand in the key. Maybe you grab a coffee or some snacks in town, then wander the short way to station, bus stop or car. The streets feel strangely short after the long days outside. Traffic and voices slowly replace wind in the trees and birds along the path.

On the journey home the scenery outside the window changes faster than your thoughts can follow. In the background you are still walking the route once more, step by step. You scroll through photos, send a message to share the stories and enjoy that pleasantly tired feeling. By the time you reach your front door, the Veluwe has become a memory you happily carry along.
