Your kids will never forget this one: snowfields in the middle of summer, marmots playing peek-a-boo on the trail, and a warm bowl of polenta waiting at the end of the hike. This is Val Formazza, a high alpine valley in Northern Italy where families come to disconnect from screens and reconnect with nature. Think waterfalls, panoramic trails, and rustic rifugios that feel like something from a storybook.

The Val Formazz Famiglia is a 5-day loop that starts and ends at Altstafel Mountain Station. It’s designed for families with kids who love being outdoors and don’t mind a little climb. The daily distances are manageable, the scenery is out of this world, and each night ends in a cozy mountain hut: Corno Gries, Maria Luisa, Bim Se al Lago, and Città di Busto.

Itinerary

Day
1

Altstafel Mountain Station - Capanna Corno Gries

Duration: 03:20 h
Distance: 6.09 km
Ascent: 570 m
Descent: 230 m

The hike starts high above the valley at the mountain station, where the cable car fades from view and the silence of the alpine bowl takes over. Gentle paths lead through grassy slopes and scattered rocks, with wide views towards the rounded summit of Nufenenstock. It is a relaxed introduction, perfect for families to get used to the altitude and the open, bright landscape around Val Corno.

The route first dips slightly towards the pastures around Mandelli, crossing streams and small bridges where the water runs straight from the snowfields. From here the path begins to climb in easy zigzags into the upper valley. The further you go, the more the massif of Corno Gries appears, with traces of old glacier and wind-carved ridges above the trail.

The final stretch traverses a rocky slope on a well-marked path, with one last short climb to reach the stone buildings of Capanna Corno Gries. The hut sits like a balcony above the valley, with plenty of flat rocks for children to explore. Inside you find a welcoming dining room, warm drinks and simple family rooms, the ideal place to settle in for the night.

Capanna Corno Gries - Rifugio Maria Luisa

Duration: 03:30 h
Distance: 9.04 km
Ascent: 140 m
Descent: 300 m

From the hut the day unfolds almost like a balcony walk, staying high above the valleys while slowly crossing from Switzerland into Italy. The landscape is wide and open, with Corno Gries and Piccolo Corno Gries keeping you company on the skyline. It feels adventurous yet manageable, a good mix for curious kids and relaxed parents.

The route begins with an easy traverse on mountain paths towards Passo di San Giacomo at about 2,308 metres. Along the way you pass small tarns, old border posts and traces of former military tracks. After the pass the trail bends south, and the scenery softens as you leave the rocky crest behind and enter Italian ground.

A gentle descent leads to the shores of Lago Toggia, its reservoir framed by grass slopes and the distant ridge of Blinnenhorn. Following the track around the water, you soon spot Rifugio Maria Luisa on a small rise near Lago Castel at 2,224 metres. The hut welcomes families with a sunny terrace, hearty food and plenty of space to stretch tired legs.

3

Rifugio Maria Luisa - Rifugio Bim Se al Lago

Duration: 01:55 h
Distance: 4.18 km
Ascent: 50 m
Descent: 430 m

This section links two lakes: the high-lying waters near the hut and the long blue ribbon of Lago Morasco far below. It is mostly a descent, with wide views of Val Formazza opening up step by step. The trail is shorter than the others, leaving plenty of time to play by the water or linger over lunch at the next accommodation.

From Rifugio Maria Luisa you follow a track across the open terrace of Lago Castel, then pick up the broad path that drops towards the dam of Lago Toggia at about 2,191 metres. Soon the valley widens and the terrain becomes gentler, with grass slopes, old stone walls and the first scattered larches.

The route winds down in easy hairpins until you reach the shores of Lago Morasco around 1,815 metres, where the reflections of Punta dei Camosci at 3,046 metres dance in the water. A final undulating stretch along the lake leads straight to Rifugio Bim Se al Lago. The hut sits almost at the water’s edge, a relaxed spot where children can skim stones while dinner simmers inside.

4

Rifugio Bim Se al Lago - Rifugio Città di Busto

Duration: 03:10 h
Distance: 5.27 km
Ascent: 690 m
Descent: 30 m

Here the mood changes from lakeside strolling to a proper mountain climb. Leaving the shore behind, you head for the high plateau beneath Punta dei Camosci at 3,046 metres, trading the soft blues of the reservoir for rocky ridges and wide glacier views. It is the most demanding stretch so far, yet still steady enough for mountain-savvy families who like a bit of effort.

The trail follows the lake for a short while before crossing the dam and turning into the valley of Bettelmatt. Through famous alpine meadows you begin a long climb of roughly 700 metres, first on a track, then on a narrower path that winds past streams and small waterfalls. Higher up, the terrain becomes more mineral, with views towards Blinnenhorn.

Near the Piano dei Camosci the gradient eases and the path swings across a stony slope towards a rocky knoll. Rifugio Città di Busto appears suddenly, perched above the basin like a lookout. The hut offers a cosy dining room, terraces facing the evening light and a friendly atmosphere where stories from the day naturally find their way across the tables.

Rifugio Città di Busto - Altstafel Mountain Station

Duration: 04:05 h
Distance: 8.08 km
Ascent: 280 m
Descent: 750 m

The final stretch ties all the scenery together, from high rocky slopes back to the quiet mountain station where the adventure began. Leaving the hut, you descend towards the green bowl of Bettelmatt before turning into a side valley that leads back towards the Swiss border. Peaks like Blinnenhorn and Punta dei Camosci stay behind you, slowly shrinking as you drop height.

A stony path leads down from Rifugio Città di Busto across the Piano dei Camosci, then into steeper zigzags towards the valley floor. After losing several hundred metres, the terrain softens and you follow tracks through meadows and along streams towards the Morasco area, with the reservoir glinting below.

From here a final climb of around 300 metres winds up through pasture and sparse larch to reach Altstafel Mountain Station. The cable car buildings appear almost suddenly on the ridge, a familiar sign that the loop is complete. While you wait for the ride down, there is time for one last picnic and a long look back over the route you have shared together.
