Intermediate Full Elba Trail

Starting from Marina di Campo, follow the Via dei Rosmarini trail to immerse yourself in the beautiful Mediterranean scrubland of the island. You will then reach Punta di Nercio, a panoramic coastal viewpoint from which you can see Fonza Beach in the distance.

Next to Punta di Mele, a long, steep ascent to Monte Fonza begins. This challenging route climbs from sea level to the peak and features fixed cables in some sections. Although challenging, the climb is rewarding, offering stunning views of the cliffs below and the Gulf of Lacona. The descent follows a rocky, steep and uneven trail, so protective clothing such as gloves may be useful.

Shortly afterwards, you will reach Capo di Fonza, where there is an optional short detour offering incredible coastal vistas. Next comes a challenging downhill section that requires experience and sure-footedness. As you join the narrow coastal trail, watch your step on the eroded stone slabs and look out for mountain bikers, Lacona is not far away!

The trail starts with the first climb of the day from Lacona. Halfway up, pause to admire the stunning panorama of the village and Capo Stella beyond. Once you reach the summit, you will begin your descent along a rocky trail.

Following the Grande Traversata Elbana, you will pass through a variety of landscapes, ranging from eroded stony slopes to wooded areas. As you move inland, the scenery changes. You will pass vineyards, rural estates, and traditional farmhouses scattered across the peaceful countryside, marking your steady departure from the coastal areas.

Now, the second climb of the day begins. This ascent follows an eroded, rocky hiking trail and is rewarded with magnificent views of Porto Azzurro from above. From there, the descent will take you directly into the village itself.

Optional: If you're feeling energetic, you can follow a scenic coastal trail to the Laghetto di Terranera, a striking lake near a sand beach. This path winds past small coves and beaches, providing the perfect way to end the day.

Today, you will start with an easy ride in Porto Azzurro. As you ascend, you will arrive at the serene setting of the Santuario della Madonna di Monserrato, a pilgrimage church marking the beginning of the day's first steep ascent. You will then encounter a short but challenging section assisted by ropes. Further on, you will reach a panoramic viewpoint overlooking Marina di Campo Bay behind you.

The route then rejoins the Grande Traversata Elbana (GTE). At a fork in the path, take the left-hand route to bypass Cima del Monte (515 m), the highest point of the day. You will soon be rewarded with views of Castello del Volterraio and Portoferraio Bay. Then, cross the road and take the central, forested trail heading north, leave Monte Capannello (408 m) on your left, and Passo La Croce will soon come into view. Next is Monte Strega (427 m), where you can spot Nisportino Bay before a long descent.

After crossing another road and a small car park, continue north along a wooded path for around 4 km. The final ascent starts at Case Colli and leads up to the Semaforo di Monte Grosso, an old lighthouse station. Turn right there and follow the GTE as it zigzags down, overlooking Marciana Marina. The final few kilometres wind through undulating terrain towards the coastal town of Cavo. You've made it!

After breakfast, you can catch a ferry back to mainland Italy, typically to the port of Piombino. Alternatively, you may choose to continue your Italian adventure elsewhere. Isola d'Elba is just the beginning!
