Somewhere between a crumbling military trail and a misty ridge near Rifugio Vallanta, it hits you, this isn’t just a trek, it’s a proper expedition. You’re circling Monviso, the mountain that gave the Po River its name. It’s huge. It’s moody. It’s the kind of mountain that stares back. And lucky you—you’ve got seven days to walk in its shadow.

This full loop around Monviso is a rugged, no-fluff trek for hikers who want something off the radar. It links up a string of remote huts in the upper Valle Po, sneaks through high alpine passes, and keeps Monviso in sight the whole way. No crowds. No souvenir stands. Just you, your boots, and the original Matterhorn (yes, this one came first). Start and end in Pian della Regina. Come back a bit smellier, and a lot prouder.

Itinerary

Day
1

Pian della Regina - Refugio Quintino Sella

Duration: 03:54 h
Distance: 8.39 km
Ascent: 960 m
Descent: 60 m

You leave Rifugio Quintino Sella beside the deep-blue waters of Lago Grande di Viso, with the sharp pyramid of Monviso rising behind the refuge. The trail skirts the lake before climbing gently into a wide alpine basin of grass, rock and scattered boulders, where the busy refuge atmosphere quickly fades into quiet mountain terrain.

The path steadily gains height toward the high ground around 2600 metres, offering wide views back toward Lago Grande di Viso and the towering slopes of Monviso. After the high point, the route begins a long descent through open alpine slopes where marmots whistle and streams cut through the grass.

As the valley gradually softens, the stone buildings of Rifugio Grongios Martre appear ahead, set in peaceful mountain pastures and marking the end of a beautiful high-alpine stage.

Refugio Quintino Sella - Rifugio Grongios Martre

Duration: 04:28 h
Distance: 10.5 km
Ascent: 200 m
Descent: 1090 m

The stage begins at Rifugio Quintino Sella beside the deep-blue waters of Lago Grande di Viso, with the striking pyramid of Monviso towering above the landscape. A clear mountain path follows the shoreline for a while, where the still water reflects the surrounding peaks and rocky slopes. Soon the trail leaves the lake behind and climbs gently into a wide alpine basin scattered with grass, rocks and glacial debris.

Step by step the route gains height toward the higher ground around 2600 metres. As you climb, the views slowly widen and Lago Grande di Viso becomes smaller below, while the massive walls of Monviso dominate the skyline. The terrain here feels open and remote, with cairns and trail markers guiding the way across the high basin.

After reaching the high point, the trail begins a gradual descent across quiet alpine slopes. The rugged terrain slowly softens as patches of grass and small streams appear again. Eventually the valley opens into peaceful mountain pastures where the stone buildings of Rifugio Grongios Martre come into view, marking the end of this beautiful stage in the shadow of Monviso.

Rifugio Grongios Martre - Rifugio Vallanta

Duration: 03:43 h
Distance: 8.14 km
Ascent: 850 m
Descent: 150 m

The trail begins near Rifugio Grongios Martre, surrounded by quiet alpine meadows and wide mountain views. A clear path leads deeper into the upper valley, crossing grassy slopes and small streams that wind through the landscape. As you move forward, the mountains gradually rise higher around you and the valley begins to feel more remote.

The route slowly climbs through open terrain mixed with rocky sections and scattered boulders. Along the way you pass alpine pastures and small watercourses flowing down from the surrounding ridges. With every step the scenery becomes wilder, and wide views open toward the high ridgelines that mark the border between Italy and France.

Further ahead the valley suddenly broadens into the Vallanta basin, a wide alpine meadow framed by steep rock walls and rugged peaks. In the middle of this open landscape stands Rifugio Vallanta, a welcoming refuge that marks the end of the stage.

Rifugio Vallanta - Rifugio Granero

Duration: 05:04 h
Distance: 10.3 km
Ascent: 800 m
Descent: 860 m

Thin morning air, a still lake beside the hut and the rock pyramid of Monviso set the tone for a proper mountain day. Two wild valleys connect over high passes and quiet alpine lakes, with a short crossing into the French Queyras before returning to Italy. The setting feels remote and high-alpine, though the trail remains clear and easy to follow.

A rocky path leaves the hut, follows the Bealera Funsa stream and climbs in steady zigzags toward Passo di Vallanta at 2,811 metres beneath the dark walls of Monviso and Viso di Vallanta. On the French side the trail drops through scree and grass to Lac Lestio and the young Guil before rising again toward Col Seilliere on the skyline.

After the second pass the route descends into upper Val Pellice with Monte Granero and Monte Manzol guarding the horizon. The trail reaches Lago Lungo, follows its quiet shore and climbs briefly to the refuge above the lake, where a warm meal and a peaceful mountain evening await.

Rifugio Granero - Rifugio Willy Jervis

Duration: 02:19 h
Distance: 6.15 km
Ascent: 20 m
Descent: 660 m

Morning at Rifugio Granero begins in a quiet, rugged corner of the Alps, surrounded by rocky slopes and high ridgelines along the Italian–French border. The trail quickly drops away from the refuge, weaving through a landscape of alpine grass, scattered boulders and small streams that flow down from the surrounding peaks. As the path bends southward, wide views open across the upper valleys and toward the remote mountains that mark the frontier.

Further down, the terrain gradually softens. The rocky slopes give way to patches of forest and wider meadows, and the trail begins a series of steady switchbacks as it descends through larch trees and open clearings. Along the way the sound of water grows stronger as the path approaches the valley floor, where mountain streams cut through gravel beds and green pastures.

Eventually the route reaches the broad Conca del Prà, one of the most beautiful alpine plains in the region. Here the landscape suddenly opens into wide grasslands crossed by winding streams and dotted with small barns. In the middle of this peaceful valley stands Rifugio Willy Jervis, a lively refuge that welcomes hikers with warm food, friendly atmosphere and sweeping views of the surrounding mountains.

Rifugio Willy Jervis - Rifugio Barbara Lowrie

Distance: 9.43 km
Ascent: 680 m
Descent: 650 m

The day begins in the wide green plains of Conca del Prà, where Rifugio Willy Jervis sits among open meadows and small streams. The trail first crosses these peaceful grasslands, passing old stone barns and grazing animals while the Pellice River winds quietly through the valley.

Soon the route reaches the edge of the forest and begins climbing through larch trees. The path zigzags steadily upward, gaining height in a series of switchbacks while the valley floor slowly drops away below. Through breaks in the trees you can look back across the wide Conca del Prà and the mountains surrounding the valley.

Higher up the forest begins to thin and the landscape opens again into alpine slopes and rocky clearings. The final stretch crosses open terrain with wide views of the surrounding peaks before reaching Rifugio Barbara Lowrie, set on a sunny mountainside overlooking the valleys below.
