There’s that moment when you stand on the ridge of Puerto de Benasque, legs buzzing, breath short, and suddenly you’re eye to eye with the giants: Aneto to your left, Salvaguardia to your right, and deep below, the emerald forests of Artiga de Lin. Welcome to one of the most scenic border crossings in the entire Pyrenees.

This 4-day loop connects the legendary Renclusa, Artiga de Lin, and Venasque refuges. It’s designed for hikers who love a physical challenge but don’t want to sleep in a tent. You start and end at Llanos del Hospital, making logistics smooth as a Spanish tinto.

Itinerary

1

Llanos del Hospital - Renclusa Refuge

Duration: 02:20 h
Distance: 6.41 km
Ascent: 420 m
Descent: 20 m

This section starts from the free parking area at Llanos del Hospital. A comfortable path follows the river and gains height gradually without technical difficulties, while the landscape shifts from forested valley to high mountain scenery of granite and ice. Little by little the views open towards the surrounding peaks and the distant glaciers of Maladeta and Aneto that rise above the head of the valley.

From the buildings of Llanos del Hospital the route follows wide tracks beside the Río Ésera, then narrows to a stonier path leading to the meadows of La Besurta, framed by steep walls and avalanche corridors. Beyond Besurta the slope becomes steeper and the path zigzags through grass and boulders toward Plan de la Renclusa. Shortly before reaching the hut a waterfall on the right invites a pause to admire the cirque of surrounding peaks.

After a short traverse over slabs and blocks we arrive at the Renclusa Refuge at about 2140 m, perched on a small shoulder above the valley. The building appears suddenly, sheltered by ridges yet open to a wide panorama of peaks and glaciers. Inside, dormitories and a welcoming dining room provide a comfortable place to rest, and nearby viewpoints allow one last look over the valley before night in the high mountains.

Renclusa Refuge - Refugio Artiga de Lin

Duration: 03:40 h
Distance: 7.71 km
Ascent: 330 m
Descent: 1000 m

From the Renclusa hut the route crosses high alpine terrain before descending into the green heart of the Aran Valley. After an initial ascent to a gentle col the path rolls across grassy plateaus and then drops toward the famous plains and waterfalls of Aiguallut. Beyond this balcony the landscape becomes wilder again as we aim for Coll de Toro, before a long descent leads to forests and meadows surrounding Artiga de Lin.

Leaving the refuge at about 2140 m we climb on a clear path toward Cuello Ancho, then descend gently to Plan Alto d Aiguallut. Here a short detour allows us to admire the waterfall and the deep Forau, where the waters disappear underground. Crossing the plain we follow waymarks toward Coll de Toro, on a less defined but still visible track, and as we climb the valley opens in every direction.

Reaching Coll de Toro we enter the Aran side and soon arrive at Lake Toro, an inviting place to rest and eat beside the shore. Skirting the left bank on a rocky trail we begin a demanding descent that is steep at first, then gradually softens as it approaches the valley floor. The path finally reaches the flat meadow of Artiga de Lin and the refuge at about 1365 m, welcoming us to the valley.

Refugio Artiga de Lin - Refugio Venasque

Duration: 04:30 h
Distance: 8.76 km
Ascent: 1180 m
Descent: 410 m

From the green basin of Artiga de Lin the route climbs firmly to the frontier ridge and then traverses to the high cirque of Venasque. Forest paths and open grazing slopes lead into the wide Pomero gully, surrounded by rocky walls and scattered livestock. Higher up we reach Coll del Lunfern and then Coll de la Picada, where superb views open over the glaciers of Aneto and Maladeta and countless surrounding peaks.

We leave the refuge on a path that quickly gains height through beech and fir, crossing the river by a metal bridge before entering the open Pomero valley. The trail climbs steadily among low vegetation, where livestock tracks can confuse the waymarks, so attention is useful. Near Coll del Lunfern a short side trip to the airy Paso de la Escaleta is possible for those with time and energy, before returning to the main route.

From Coll de la Picada we follow a panoramic traverse along the ridge, with constant views of the Benasque valley on one side and deep French valleys on the other. The path reaches the Portillón de Benasque, then continues on a well trodden trail that contours above the turquoise Boums du Venasque. Skirting the main lake, a final short climb leads to the refuge, pleasantly located on a rocky knoll overlooking the water.

Refugio Venasque - Llanos del Hospital

Duration: 02:35 h
Distance: 5.99 km
Ascent: 170 m
Descent: 690 m

Beginning beside the lakes of Venasque, this final section returns to the broad valley of Llanos del Hospital. A brief climb regains the border pass before we start the long descent back into Spain. The views remain alpine for much of the way, with Pico de Salvaguardia and other frontier summits close at hand, gradually giving way to gentler meadows and forests as we approach the valley floor.

We leave the French refuge on the familiar path that climbs back to Port de Venasque, enjoying early morning light over the lakes. From the pass we descend to the Portillón de Benasque, where an optional out and back to Pico Salvaguardia is possible for strong parties. The main itinerary turns directly downhill, following a well marked trail that traverses rightwards across slopes of scree and grass toward the head of the valley.

The descent gradually becomes easier as the path enters gentler ground, passing near small tarns and then on to broader tracks in the Llanos del Hospital basin. Meadows, grazing livestock and stands of pine replace the rocky scenery, while the high ridge behind provides a final backward glance. The route ends at the historic buildings of Llanos del Hospital, where the accommodation and nearby terraces offer a comfortable place to relax after the journey.
