Touching down in Santa Cruz de La Palma always feels like stepping into a warm hug. The capital welcomes you with bright facades, old balconies and that lazy ocean breeze that instantly slows everything down. It is a gentle start, perfect for easing into the rhythm of the island.

A wander through the narrow streets brings you past cafés, palm lined plazas and the stately Avenida Marítima. You might drift into the old quarter where shady corners, small shops and the soft hum of local life help you switch gears. The harbour and the black sand beach add a salty sparkle to the afternoon.

Your accommodation sits tucked between quiet streets and colourful houses, a short stroll from the waterfront. It is the ideal spot to settle in, unpack at your own pace and enjoy a relaxed evening. Tomorrow the mountains will call, but for now Santa Cruz gives you the space to simply arrive.

Santa Cruz de La Palma- El Paso

Duration: 06:35 h
Distance: 16.4 km

Descent: 790 m

This first mountain day starts gently as you leave the bright streets of Santa Cruz behind and climb toward quieter hills. The sea fades, the air cools and the island slowly shows its wilder side. It is a steady and rewarding route that eases you into the heartbeat of La Palma.

You weave through narrow neighbourhoods like San Telmo before rising above the rooftops. Small lanes turn into earthy paths and soon you walk among banana fields and pockets of laurel forest. The climb keeps its rhythm up to the crest near Cumbre Nueva where views open toward Montaña de la Hiedra at 1047 metres and the long volcanic ridge beyond.

The descent rolls through airy pine forest with glimpses into the Caldera de Taburiente and the valley below. As the landscape softens you approach the quiet edges of El Paso. Your accommodation sits tucked between simple houses and gardens, an easy place to land after a full day, ready for the volcanic heights waiting tomorrow.

Refugio El Pilar - Los Canarios

Duration: 06:55 h
Distance: 17.4 km
Ascent: 600 m
Descent: 1360 m

The day begins with a short taxi ride up through the pine forests to Refugio El Pilar, where the morning light slips between the trees. The path follows the broad ridge and the world falls away on both sides, a blend of cloud seas, dark cones and quiet mountain stillness.

The route weaves from cone to cone, each shaped by a different moment in the island’s fiery past. You pass the sombre flank of Birigoyo and later the torn craters of Hoyo Negro and Duraznero. Colours shift from deep black to rusty red as the terrain grows wilder. Above it all, peaks like Deseadas at 1945 metres rise with an easy grandeur.

The long descent toward Los Canarios softens the landscape again. Pine woods return, small farms appear and the volcanic desert slowly gives way to warm village sounds. Your accommodation waits in the calm streets of the hamlet, a gentle landing spot after a day spent walking the island’s living backbone.
