> Cross the entire island on foot via the Madeira Trail
> Climb Madeira's highest peak, Pico Ruivo
> Includes hotel accommodation before and after the trek
The Madeira Trail is a 5-day trekking adventure across the Portuguese island of Madeira. This remote subtropical island sits in the Atlantic Ocean, about 500 kilometers west of the African coast. The route stretches from the island’s eastern tip to the northwest coast, following a network of trails that wind along mountain ridges and peaks. One of the highlights is the ascent of Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest point at 1862 meters.
This trek is best suited for intermediate hikers who are up for a physical challenge. We’ve linked together the island’s most scenic levadas (trails along irrigation channels) and veredas (mountain paths) into a continuous route that can be done in a week. Expect long days on the trail, with plenty of elevation gain and descent. Thankfully, each evening ends in a comfortable mountain stay—and hotel nights are included before and after the trek to make your journey smoother from start to finish.
Important Notice: The Madeira trails are reopening in 2026, but Casa de Abrigo do Pico Ruivo remains closed for renovations with no reopening date. Because there are no alternative accommodations in this area, the original itinerary is still unavailable. This trek uses a modified route until the refuge reopens.
