> Cross into the wildest part of the Swiss TMB
> Stay at mountain classics: Cabane de la Tsissette and Alpage de la Peule
> Begin and end your trek in charming Orsières
Early morning in Orsières. Your pack is tight, the air is crisp, and ahead lies 3 days of rugged Swiss terrain that make up the boldest slice of the Tour du Mont Blanc. This is the alpine version turned up to eleven: steep climbs, exposed trails, and raw scenery that hits hard and lingers long.
Each stage is a challenge worth every drop of sweat. From the quiet charm of Cabane de la Tsissette to the green pastures around La Peule, this trek is packed with altitude, solitude, and drama. Expect to gain serious elevation as you cross into some of the most remote corners of the TMB. This one’s for the seasoned hikers, the mountain goats, the “give-me-the-hard-route” kind of crowd!
Your adventure begins in the charming Swiss village of Orsières, located in the Valais region. From the outset, today's stage involves a steady ascent heading south, with a gradual ascent throughout the day as you trek higher up the mountain.
The trail winds through quiet alpine paths and wooded areas, ensuring an enjoyable trek despite the significant elevation gain. After around 6 kilometres, you will reach a beautiful viewpoint near La Roche de Cornet where many different paths converge, offering superb views of Val Ferret. Further on, you will pass Crête de Velle, a wide trail shared with mountain bikers. Watch out for them!
As you continue your steady uphill route, the landscape gradually opens up to reveal panoramic vistas, indicating that your destination is close by. Finally, you will reach the Cabane de la Tsisette: a cosy, scenic mountain hut perfectly located for your overnight stay. Relax, enjoy a well-deserved meal, and take in the peaceful alpine atmosphere before tomorrow's stage.
After leaving the Cabane de la Tsisette refuge, you begin your ascent towards the Neve de la Rousse, a wide, open mountain pass covered in scree and boulders. Nestled between La Tsavre and the western ridge of Becca Colinta and overlooking Val Ferret, the pass's rocky, almost moon-like atmosphere creates a surreal ambience.
The route then continues to the narrow, steep Col de l’Arpalle, a spectacular pass of weather-worn rocks and exposed ridgelines. Shortly afterwards, you will reach a spectacular high alpine lake, Lac de Fenêtre. As you approach it, the trail passes through a short, slightly exposed section where caution is advised. The lake itself is the perfect place to pause and take in the views before a steady, zigzagging descent.
As you go down through alpine meadows and alongside streams near Les Ars, turn left for the final approach to your gîte. It is surrounded by peaceful pastures and is the perfect place to rest after a challenging alpine day.
You will start the day with a gentle descent through green pastures, enjoying panoramic views of Mont Dolent and Petit Col Ferret along the way. The trail then gradually descends further into the valley, following easy paths alongside the river. You will pass traditional Swiss Alpine chalets and cows grazing in the fields. The route is mostly gentle, allowing you to fully enjoy your surroundings without encountering any technical challenges.
As you approach La Fouly, you will enter a wooded area and follow a clearly marked trail through the trees and alongside small streams. After a short rest, the descent continues gently along quiet rural roads and forest paths. The final section winds through small hamlets and tranquil countryside as you approach the valley floor. The route ends in the charming village of Orsières, where your tour began. Well done!
