The full Mullerthal Trail is 112 kilometers long, and consists of three different routes, that all can be combined. This makes the Mullerthal Trail suitable for a weekend, a long weekend, or even a week!

Mullerthal Trail Route 1 is 36 kilometers long, which will take you approximately 12 hours in total. This route starts in Echternach and can be best described as a sightseeing route. This route combines the forest, the meadows, and the rock formations around Echternach.

Mullerthal Trail Route 2 is 38 kilometers long, which will take you about 15 hours in total. This route is, just like Route 1, starting in Echternach and is dominated by rock formations. This trek is considerably more challenging than Route 1, due to the climbing and height differences. You don't have to worry about the logistics of booking accommodation along the route, as we will arrange this for you. The only thing you then have to do is to enjoy this beautiful landscape.

Echternach to Born

Duration: 05:18 h
Distance: 18.6 km
Ascent: 430 m
Descent: 430 m

The hike begins in Echternach, the oldest town in Luxembourg. Here you immediately experience the atmosphere of history and culture: the impressive Basilica of Saint Willibrord, the lively market square, and the Echternach Lake form a beautiful starting point.

Soon you leave the town behind and walk along winding forest paths up to the Trooskneppchen viewpoint, where you are rewarded with a stunning panorama over the town and the surrounding landscape. The trail then continues through peaceful forests and open fields, where you can enjoy lush meadows, orchards, and the gentle flow of the Sûre River. Halfway along the stage you will find the remarkable chapel of Girsterklaus, a small pilgrimage chapel with an impressive view over the valley. It is an idyllic place to pause for a moment and take in the tranquility of the region.

The final part of the route meanders through a varied landscape of open plains and small wooded areas until you reach the charming village of Born. Here you can relax and unwind after your hike.

Echternach to Müllerthal/Scheidgen

Duration: 06:12 h
Distance: 22.5 km
Ascent: 390 m
Descent: 340 m

From Echternach, you immediately step into the fairytale-like nature of Luxembourg’s Müllerthal. While the previous stage mainly showcases open landscapes and orchards, this section is all about rock formations, gorges, and mysterious forest paths.

You walk through the famous sandstone rocks that have given the Müllerthal its nickname “Little Switzerland.” Narrow passages, moss-covered walls, and shaded ravines make this route one full of adventure and variety. Along the way, you pass idyllic streams winding between the rocks and hear the gentle murmur of water everywhere. The trail alternates between intense nature experiences and short open sections where you suddenly enjoy wide views over the valley. It is precisely this contrast, from dark rock gorges to bright panoramic viewpoints, that makes this stage unique.

After a series of winding forest paths, you reach the village of Müllerthal, nestled in the heart of this rocky landscape.

Note: If you are staying in Scheidgen and prefer not to walk there, you can simply take the bus from Müllerthal to Scheidgen. Extra convenient: in Luxembourg, buses are free!
