Around the mountain Hochkönig it is a paradise for hikers in the summer. Hiking through an impressive landscape, resting in cozy mountain huts and enjoying all the regional dishes at dinner: this is what makes this region so attractive. Hike the first part of the Salzburger Almenweg!

During this 4-day walk you walk about 48 kilometers including 2300 altimeters. The highlight is stage 3, where you’ll reach Schneeberg Kreuz at 1,900 meters, offering an unforgettable view. You will spend the night in the mountain hotel Arthurhaus, the mountain hut Erichhütte and a local hotel in Mülbach.

Pfarrwerfen - Arthurhaus

This stage is relatively long but manageable. The hike starts at the train stop in Pfarrwerfen, where you will also find ample parking. The trail leads you through forests and valleys, offering magical views along the way. At the end of the stage, the path goes steadily downhill to the Arthurhaus.

Arthurhaus - Erichhütte

This second stage takes you through a picturesque landscape with no major climbs. The route offers breathtaking panoramas of the Alps and the southern walls of the Hochkönig. Along the way you can stop in numerous mountain inns for a bite to eat and a drink.

Note: The Erich Hütte is a wonderful example of an authentic Austrian mountain hut and only accepts cash payments on site. The reservation is arranged for you by Bookatrekking.com but bring enough cash to pay for the overnight stay, dinner and personal expenses. The overnight stay, which includes breakfast, costs about €50 per person. In addition, the hut does not have a shower or towels.

Erichhütte - Schneebergkreuz - Mülbach

During this stage, you will enjoy stunning views of Hochkönig. The route includes steep climbs through occasionally marshy terrain to the Schneebergkreuz. The panoramic views from this summit are the highlight of this stage! Via the Karbachalm, you can take the Kabinenbahn to Mühlbach. Note: The distance and estimated time do not take into account a descent with the Kabinenbahn. If you take it, you can easily shave off more than 2 hours from your hiking day.

Mülbach - Schneebergkreuz - Böndlsee - Lend

Duration: 07:55 h

The next day we take the Mülbarger Bergbahn back to Karbachalm, where stage 4 begins. This stage offers a scenic route with some steep descents and wide-open views. Along the way, you’ll reach Gamskögerl, where you can soak in panoramic vistas in every direction. The trail then leads down towards Böndlsee, and from there it’s about a 45-minute walk to the Lend/Salzbach Bahnhof train station. From here you can easily catch a train back to Pfarrwerfen or Salzburg.

Note: If the cable car from Mülbarger Bergbahn back to Karbachalm is closed, you will need to take Route Option 2. This alternative is also ideal for those who prefer a shorter day. Route Option 2 follows a more direct path to Werfen, partly retracing the trail from the first day, and brings you back to the valley sooner without missing the charm of the mountains.

    During your Salzburger Almenweg, you will spend your nights in mountain huts. In the mountain huts we normally only book dormitories, but we can look into private rooms on request. If the private rooms are fully booked or not available in the hut, we automatically book a bed in dormitories for you. Please note that private rooms are more expensive and there will be an additional charge for this.

  • Breakfast

    Every morning breakfast is waiting for you. We will arrange this for you as well. This allows you to travel lighter and have one less thing to worry about. Bear in mind that lunch and dinner are not included, but it can be purchased in the huts.

  • Navigation support

    Our trekking app also includes built-in navigation support. With GPS-based maps and offline access, you can follow the trail confidently and stay on route even without mobile signal.

  • Traveling to and from

    You have to make your own way to the starting point. The total amount does not include personal transport.

  • Transfers

    Should you need any form of (public) transport on location, this is not part of the trekking package. This includes the use of taxi, bus, cable cars, gondolas, ferries, etc.

  • Travel Insurance

    Your international travel insurance is your own responsibility. Discuss your itinerary with the insurance company before your trek.

  • Personal expenses

    Personal expenses on such as souvenirs, drinks, and other similar expenses are for your own account.

  • Lunch and Dinner

    Breakfast is included in the price of the trek. You can get lunch at the hotels, restaurants on the way or in your accommodation at the end of stage.

  • Payment Erich Hütte

    The Erich Hütte only accepts cash payments on site. You will need to bring this with you and pay for half board, at a cost of approximately €50 per person. So this is not included in the price of this package. Bookatrekking.com takes care of the reservation of the hut.
