Short Stubaier Höhenweg

After breakfast, take bus 590 towards Neustift i. St. Mutterbergalm and get off at the final stop, Mutterbergalm—the starting point of your trek. From here, the trail immediately immerses you in alpine beauty as you cross glacier streams and pass a waterfall near the Alm.

Your ascent to the Dresdner Hütte begins with a series of zigzags, winding below the cable car line. The climb is steady but rewarding, and about halfway up it’s worth pausing to look back over the valley and take in the sweeping views of the Stubai Alps.

With a final push through a few more zigzags, the iconic Dresdner Hütte soon comes into sight, welcoming you after a two-hour hike through some of the most striking scenery in the region.

Today's stage may be short in distance, but it offers some of the most striking scenery of the Stubai Alps. Soon after leaving the Dresdner Hütte, you will cross a bridge over the Fernaubach Gorge and make your way towards the Steinmännchen Saddle, with its distinctive rocky terrain. From here, the trail starts to get real, with cables provided in sections to help with the ascent to the Peiljoch.

Shortly after conquering the highest point of the day, the route turns southward and rewards you with a closer look at the Sulzenausee. As you descend into the glacier valley, you will pass colorful, glacially polished rock formations before reaching a junction. Follow the signs east towards the Sulzenau Hütte, where the landscape softens and the views remain spectacular.

From the Sulzenau Hütte, it is worth taking an additional hike and visiting the "blauen Lacke." This lake is one of the highlights of the Wild Water Trail in the Stubai Mountains. Fed by meltwater from the upper glacier, the lake almost always shines in a distinct blue-turquoise color.

From the Sulzenau Hütte you hike along the Wildwasserweg in about 2.5 hours to the bus stop in the valley. So you may still have time for walks in the region of Sulzenau Hütte before you start your descent. On the way you will encounter some beautiful waterfalls. Once descended, take bus 590 back to Neustift.
