> Visit typical Georgian villages with medieval stone houses
> Spend 3 nights in local guesthouses and 2 nights camping
> Cross the Atsunta Pass (3431m)
This 6 day Omalo Shatili Trek is probably the most stunning route you can imagine. We trek in Tusheti and Khevsureti - two remote historical provinces of Georgia. These regions are difficult to access and therefore preserve local traditions and special architectural styles such as stone towers and houses. Our journey takes us through the mountains of the Greater Caucasus, characterised by alpine meadows, snow-capped peaks, pine forests and medieval villages.
Note: All treks in Georgia are only available from May to November due to more favourable climate conditions.
Your Tusheti adventure begins at your hotel. After breakfast we drive to the Kakheti region. We visit one of the most beautiful and breathtaking churches, the Alaverdi Cathedral, built in the 11th century. Then we follow one of the most dangerous and adventurous mountain passes and cross it at an altitude of 2850 m. After 6 hours of driving we reach and explore Omalo, an administrative and most populated area (up to several families) in Tusheti. On arrival we check into our guesthouse and then walk around Omalo and visit the Keselo Towers. Overnight in Omalo.
Tusheti is roughly divided into two parts: Pirikiti's Alazani Gorge and Gometsari Alazani River. In the morning we hike to the village of Dartlo in the Pirikiti Tusheti valley. It has been recently renovated and is a typical Tusheti village with medieval stone houses and defensive buildings. From Dartlo we walk to the village of Kvavlo, a village of mostly ruined towers and houses overlooking the Alazani River and the surrounding mountains. The walk is 3.2 km one way, 400 m of ascent (from 1 833 to 2 182 m) and takes about 2 hours one way. Overnight in Dartlo.
In the morning we continue our journey to Tusheti. We follow the Pirikiti Alazani river upstream through its narrow gorge. First we visit the villages of Chesho and Parsma with beautiful houses and stone towers. Then we take a narrow footpath and reach the village of Girevi. Overnight in Girevi.
