The scent of pine needles, the crunch of sand under your boots, and the early morning sight of a deer darting through the trees, this is how your day begins on the Veluwe Tour. From the moment you hop off the historic steam train in Dieren, you step into a different rhythm. One where villages are few, forests are vast, and the biggest distraction is the silence.

The Veluwe Tour is a 7-day trek through one of the most beloved natural regions of the Netherlands. Over five walking days, you’ll cover 84 kilometers from Dieren to Lunteren, through forests, moorlands, and sandy dunes. Each night, you rest in a new village: Loenen, Hoenderloo, Kootwijk, Otterlo, and finally Lunteren. We’ve included an overnight stay before the walk starts and one at the end so you can ease in and out of your adventure. It’s the ideal walking holiday for beginners with basic fitness, offering moderate distances and paths that are easy to follow. Simple, peaceful, and very Dutch.

Itinerary

Day
1

Arrival in Dieren

You arrive in a village caught between river and forest, where everything immediately feels calmer. After the journey there is time to settle in: check in, grab a drink, maybe stretch your legs along the edge of the estate. The noise of trains and traffic fades, and your mind slowly slips into walking mode.

If you still have a bit of energy, you can make a short warm-up loop through the woods of Hof te Dieren. Broad avenues, old trees and birds overhead give a first taste of the days ahead. A bench with a view is perfect for adjusting straps and simply breathing.

Back at your accommodation you unpack at ease and glance through tomorrow’s route. Dinner can be somewhere in the centre or as something simple from a nearby shop. With a last drink on the bed and the window slightly open, it already feels as if the journey has quietly begun.

2

Dieren - Loenen

Duration: 05:00 h
Distance: 19.2 km
Ascent: 150 m
Descent: 140 m

The route leaves the river landscape behind and slips straight into old estate forest. Gradual climbing brings you toward the higher ridges near the Carolinaberg, before the landscape opens into rolling heath. Broad lanes, sandy tracks and quiet woodland create a steady rhythm in your steps. A gentle descent over forest paths finally delivers you into a compact village where food and rest are easy to find.

Soon after the start you pass De Buurtbeuk, a lone tree with a bench and a wide view over Dieren and the meadows. Paths lead into Hof te Dieren, where old avenues climb steadily toward the Carolinaberg, roughly fifty metres high. Waymarked junctions guide you through forest and past the Hans Wensink bridge to the open heath of Loenermark. Viewpoints and the sheepfold give this final stretch a classic Veluwe feel.

As the trees thin out and the first houses appear, the village comes into focus. Quiet streets bring you to your accommodation, somewhere between church, café and small shops. Backpack off, shoes in a corner, maybe a drink outside if the weather plays along. With forest almost at the doorstep, it is an easy place to relax and look back on the first kilometres.

Loenen - Hoenderloo

Duration: 05:00 h
Distance: 19.3 km
Ascent: 110 m
Descent: 90 m

This section strings together watercourses, woodland and heath into one flowing line. You leave the village behind and follow streams, small cascades and shady paths further into the interior of the Veluwe. Short climbs beside the water gently warm the legs. Later the terrain opens into sandy tracks and wider views, before forest lanes guide you toward the next settlement between the trees.

After passing the Harmanahof nature garden, the path joins the clear stream toward the little waterfall and the sprengen of Loenen. Steeper bits hug the water before easing into winding forest tracks and a sandy trail along heathland. Benches with views over Loenermark invite a pause, while places like De Woeste Hoeve, blueberry patches and several waymarked junctions keep things varied. The gatehouse of Deelerwoud marks the transition toward quieter forest again.

As paths broaden and more cyclists appear, the next village announces itself. You wander in along calm streets and find your lodging near the centre, with terraces, small shops and the Heldring well close by. It is easy to blend in, refuel and let your legs recover. The atmosphere is relaxed, perfect for planning the following stretch with a drink in hand.

Hoenderloo - Kootwijk

Duration: 04:30 h
Distance: 17.5 km
Ascent: 70 m
Descent: 90 m

The day begins in a forest village and ends in a tiny settlement beside wide sand plains. Between those two, the path links stately avenues, playful singletrack and heathland views. You feel the landscape slowly open as trees give way to more sky. By the time you reach the sand and church of the next village, it is clear you have crossed the central spine of the Veluwe.

From the surroundings of the Heldring church you follow the walking junctions toward Boslaan, a broad green corridor. A long beech avenue carries you deeper into the woods before the trail dives into flowing singletrack in Boswachterij Hoenderloo. Short climbs lead to viewpoints like the Willem Wensink bench and the lookout over hidden heath meadows. The distinctive water tower appears as a landmark before you step onto the open sands of Kootwijkerzand.

After the sand, forest paths and small roads guide you gently toward the cluster of houses ahead. The reformed church in the centre serves as an easy beacon, close to your accommodation and one or two simple eateries. Once the visitors leave, the village becomes pleasantly quiet. It is a good place to enjoy an unhurried evening and drift toward sleep with the day still in your head.

Kootwijk - Otterlo

Duration: 03:29 h
Distance: 13.8 km
Ascent: 10 m
Descent: 20 m

This section feels calm and easy-going, with gentle rises and plenty of open views. You leave a small village and wander through woodland, fields and farms toward a livelier place. An early viewpoint and an unusual vineyard rest stop add flavour to the day. Most of the time your legs can simply turn over on autopilot while the landscape slowly shifts around you.

From the church you walk out of the village and soon climb to the Zandheuvel viewpoint, looking back over forest and farmland. Paths lead through Boswachterij Kootwijk and on to quiet country roads into Harskamp. Just outside the village a self-service vineyard rest stop offers coffee or juice straight from the fridge. Broad tracks between fields and farms then guide you steadily in the direction of the next village.

As houses appear more frequently and traffic gently picks up, you slip into a busier centre. A few turns through residential streets bring you close to De Waldhoorn and other cafés. Your accommodation is never far, whether on the main street or in a quieter corner. The mix of tourist buzz and village cosiness makes it a relaxed place to spend the evening.

Otterlo - Lunteren

Duration: 03:46 h
Distance: 14.7 km
Ascent: 40 m
Descent: 50 m

The final walking stretch links two Veluwe villages via quiet forest and a symbolic point in the country’s middle. You soon leave restaurants and campsites behind and walk beneath tall trees again. The route climbs toward the Goudsberg plateau, where stones and signs mark the geographic centre. Afterwards, gentle descents and broad paths lead toward a friendly town whose classic inn feels like a natural finishing line.

From the centre you slip past the church into the woods and reach a simple bench, perfect for a short pause. The path climbs gradually toward the Goudsberg, around fifty metres high, where information panels and boulders indicate both geographic centre and midpoint of the country. Short loops and viewpoints invite a bit of extra wandering. Leaving the hill, you follow broad forest tracks and green corridors as houses draw ever closer.

Within the town a few quiet streets bring you to a traditional brown café that also serves as a hotel. Inside, wooden tables, warm lighting and hearty food make it easy to stay seated a little longer. Your room is just a staircase away, so boots and backpack can finally rest. As the streets outside grow quieter, this overnight stop closes the journey in a comfortable way.

Departure from Lunteren

The final day is all about heading home at an easy pace. Walking is done, so the only plan is to eat, pack and travel. Breakfast feels a little different now, with memories of forest, sand and heath quietly replaying. There is no real rush, just that soft slide from trail rhythm back toward everyday life. It is a gentle landing instead of a hard stop.

After breakfast you pack your bag one last time, check the room and hand in the key. Maybe you grab a coffee or some snacks in town, then wander the short way to station, bus stop or car. The streets feel strangely short after the long days outside. Traffic and voices slowly replace wind in the trees and birds along the path.

On the journey home the scenery outside the window changes faster than your thoughts can follow. In the background you are still walking the route once more, step by step. You scroll through photos, send a message to share the stories and enjoy that pleasantly tired feeling. By the time you reach your front door, the Veluwe has become a memory you happily carry along.
