The Vier-Quellen Weg, or Four Springs Trail, was introduced in Switzerland in 2012. This route crosses as many as four cantons: Uri, Graubünden, Ticino and Valais. The route markings are excellent, making it almost effortless to follow. Andermatt serves as the starting point and is easily accessible by car or public transport.

During the 7-day Vier Quellen Weg, the sources are so close together that you can see all four on foot. The Four Springs, Four Cantons, Four Nights: that is the Vier Quellen Weg, pre-eminently the most enjoyable multi-day mountain hike through the Gotthard Massif.

Today you must make your way to Andermatt, where we will have booked a hotel room for you. You can spend the afternoon discovering this welcoming small town before you start your Vier Quellen Weg.

From Oberalp Pass to the Vermigelhütte

On the first day of the Vier-Quellen-Weg you climb steeply to the source of the Rhine, the same river that ends 1233 kilometres away in the North Sea near Rotterdam, The Netherlands. You might have wondered, but this is precisely why you will find a replica of the Hoek van Holland Dutch lighthouse here. It is also the tallest lighthouse in the world. You continue hiking through a beautiful valley towards the Portgerensee at 2383 metres. This is followed by a gentle descent to the cosy Vermigelhütte, where you will spend the first night.

From the Vermigelhütte to the Gotthardpass

After a good breakfast at the hut, you'll hike from your accommodation towards the Sella Pass. Halfway through your trek, you will reach the beautiful Lago del Sella. After another hour of hiking, surrounded by enchanting lakes such as Lago della Piazza and Lago dell'Ospizio, you will arrive at your next accommodation., Hotel Passo San Gottardo.

Today is a long stage on the program, so it is wise to start early. You continue over the Gotthard Pass and reach the beautiful Lago di Lucendro, a reservoir in the canton of Ticino, with the distinctive clear blue water you are used to in Switzerland. From here, you continue walking to the next source called Quelle Gotthard-Reuss. Tonight, after a long but beautiful stage, you will arrive at the mountain hut where a warm meal awaits you.

Stage 4, like the previous stages, offers a wealth of wonderful experiences. Departing from Piansecco, you will head towards the Ticino spring region, hiking over the Nufenen Pass and through Alpine meadows. At the old bridge at Ladstafel, you can pause and surely take some photos of this beautiful highlight of your trek. Just before you arrive in the town of Obergesteln for your overnight stay, you will cross a well-maintained suspension bridge.

The last day of your Four-Quellen-Weg has 2 options for hiking to your final point of the trek. You can hike the official route that mainly goes close to the main road and the Rhine, or you can choose to hike via the Furka Höhenweg. Both options treat you to beautiful views one last time, and after another long hiking day, you will eventually arrive at Belvédère.

Important: Please take into account the bus timetables so you don’t miss the last bus. You can check the current schedules on the SBB website.

Booking the huts

We will take care of arranging accommodation on the Vier Quellen Weg for you. We will also provide you with a detailed itinerary for every stage and instructions on how to get to the trailhead.
Full travel guide

You’ll receive access to our trekking app, which serves as your complete digital travel guide for the Vier Quellen Weg . Inside, you’ll find everything you need for your trek: route descriptions, hiking maps, navigation support, payment information, and all the key details specific to your journey.
Accommodation

During your Vier Quellen Weg , you will spend your nights in mountain huts. In the mountain huts we normally only book dormitories, but we can look into private rooms on request. If the private rooms are fully booked or not available in the hut, we automatically book a bed in dormitories for you. Please note that private rooms are more expensive and there will be an additional charge for this.
Half-board in Huts

Accommodation at the huts includes dinner and breakfast. We will arrange this for you as well. This allows you to travel lighter and have one less thing to worry about. Bear in mind that lunch is not included, but it can be purchased at the huts. Here you can also buy an array of snacks and bottled water.
Breakfast in Hotels

In the Hotels, we include Breakfast for you. Bear in mind that lunch and dinner are not included, but they can be most of the time purchased in or near the hotels.
Accommodation before and after the tour

Accommodation before and after the trek is included. Breakfast is (if possible) part of your stay.
Navigation support

Our trekking app also includes built-in navigation support. With GPS-based maps and offline access, you can follow the trail confidently and stay on route even without mobile signal.

Traveling to and from

You have to make your own way to the starting point. The total amount does not include personal transport.
Transfers

Should you need any form of (public) transport on location, this is not part of the trekking package. This includes the use of taxi, bus, cable cars, gondolas, ferries, etc.
Lunch

Half-board is included in the price of this trek. Lunch, however, is not. You can get something to eat at the mountain huts along the way.
Travel Insurance

Your international travel insurance is your own responsibility. Discuss your itinerary with the insurance company before your trek.

Personal expenses on such as souvenirs, drinks, and other similar expenses are for your own account.
