Riffelberg to Gornergrat

Duration: 03:30 h
Distance: 8.84 km
Ascent: 510 m
Descent: 510 m

Start your hike at Riffelberg, easily reached by either the Gornergrat Railway or the gondola from Zermatt. Both options offer spectacular views even before your hike begins. It’s highly recommended to book your tickets in advance, especially during the high season, as seats can fill up quickly.

From Riffelberg, follow the trail past the breathtaking Riffelsee, where the Matterhorn reflects perfectly on the lake’s surface — a magical photo stop! Then continue your climb to the Gornergrat, where you'll be greeted with panoramic views of more than 20 peaks above 4,000 meters, including the majestic Monte Rosa massif. Treat yourself to a meal at the mountaintop restaurant while soaking in the scenery.

To descend, you can follow the scenic trail back down along the Gornergrat Railway route to Riffelberg. Prefer a more relaxed return? Simply hop on the train at Gornergrat and ride it straight down to Zermatt — an easy and exciting option for families or those wanting a shorter hike.
