Of all the trekking routes on Kilimanjaro the Umbwe is by far the most challenging. The challenge lies in the fast ascent and the dramatic altitude differences. Because the route is not great in terms of acclimatisation, the route is often only recommended to seasoned mountain goats. Climbers need to have significant experience in trekking at higher altitude.
The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the South and goes via Umbwe Cave straight to the Barranco Wall. Itineraries are usually made up of 6 or 7 days. If you want to do something out of the ordinary and want to spice up your Kilimanjaro experience, you should definitely consider moving away from the crowds. Are you Umbwe enough?
