The Alta Via di Capra is a 4-day hut-to-hut hike in the Dolomites that starts in Cortina d'Ampezzo and takes you to the famous Cinque Torri. This package includes hotel accommodation before and after the trek. Looking for a challenge, but don’t want it to be too technical? Then this trek is perfect for you.

Many hikers have the Alta Via 1 on their bucket list, but due to its growing popularity, it often sells out quickly. With the Alta Via di Capra, we take you to two highlights of the Alta Via 1 route: Cinque Torri and Croda da Lago! This Dolomites hut-to-hut hike covers a total of 37 kilometers and is suitable for experienced hikers, or beginners who don’t mind being seriously challenged.

Today you will arrive in Cortina d'Ampezzo, where we have booked a hotel room for you. Cortina d'Ampezzo offers Italian charm with its atmospheric streets, culinary delights and historical sites, making it the ideal destination for an unforgettable start to your Alta Via di Capra adventure.

Today you will depart from Cortina d'Ampezzo, starting slowly uphill. First, you cross the river and then gradually head into the mountains. You continue on a stretch of asphalt, leading you to Lago Ghedina, a beautiful mountain lake. After about 5 kilometers you will pass Vista Lago, a breathtaking lake with a soothing atmosphere. You continue your way under the cable car and pass Rifugio Pomedes. From here it's another kilometer to arrive at Rifugio Dibona, your overnight spot for tonight. From Rifugio Dibona you have beautiful views over the valley of Cortina d'Ampezzo.

Rifugio Dibona - Rifugio Cinque Torri

Today is scheduled for a relatively short hiking day, which ensures that you can take good time along the way to enjoy all the beauty you encounter. After leaving Rifugio Dibona you will immediately start with a descent, then cross the main road SR48. From here you then begin to slowly climb again, and again today you will walk a short distance under the cable car. Before you reach Rifugio Cinque Torri, you will take a small detour to get a fantastic view of the mountain range of the same name.

Rifugio Cinque Torri - Rifugio Croda da Lago

Upon waking up, you already have beautiful views of Cinque Torri. These beautiful views will only get better today. In fact, after about a kilometer of walking you have a fantastic panoramic view of Tofana di Rozes and Castelletto. No matter which way you look here, it is breathtaking. A little further on you pass Forcella Nuvolau, and Rifugio Averau. From here you have wonderful views to the Marmolada, another mountain range. A little further on you have new panoramic views, this time of Ra Gusela, Passo Giau and the surrounding mountains. You continue your way through Passo Giau, one of the highlights you must have been to when in the Dolomites. You pass Forcella Zonia and Forcella Col Piombin. Further on you have beautiful views of Lago di Baste e Monte Mondeval, Croda da Lago, and Lago Federa. At the latter you will find Rifugio Croda da Lago, where you will spend the night.

Leaving Rifugio Croda da Lago, you can enjoy the beautiful Lago Federa one last time, shooting your last beautiful pictures here. Further on you will have beautiful panoramic views of Lago d'Ajal and at Campo di Sotto you will leave the mountains, from here you can easily hike back to Cortina d'Ampezzo. You pass Campo di Sopra, a small suburb of Cortina d'Ampezzo.

Booking the huts

We will take care of arranging accommodation on the Alta Via di Capra for you. We will also provide you with a detailed itinerary for every stage and instructions on how to get to the trailhead.
Full travel guide

You’ll receive access to our trekking app, which serves as your complete digital travel guide for the Alta Via di Capra. Inside, you’ll find everything you need for your trek: route descriptions, hiking maps, navigation support, payment information, and all the key details specific to your journey.
Accommodation

During your Alta Via di Capra, you will spend your nights in mountain huts. In the mountain huts we normally only book dormitories, but we can look into private rooms on request. If the private rooms are fully booked or not available in the hut, we automatically book a bed in dormitories for you. Please note that private rooms are more expensive and there will be an additional charge for this.
Half-board in Huts

Accommodation at the huts includes dinner and breakfast. We will arrange this for you as well. This allows you to travel lighter and have one less thing to worry about. Bear in mind that lunch is not included, but it can be purchased at the huts. Here you can also buy an array of snacks and bottled water.
Navigation support

Our trekking app also includes built-in navigation support. With GPS-based maps and offline access, you can follow the trail confidently and stay on route even without mobile signal.

Traveling to and from

You have to make your own way to the starting point. The total amount does not include personal transport.
Transfers

Should you need any form of (public) transport on location, this is not part of the trekking package. This includes the use of taxi, bus, cable cars, gondolas, ferries, etc.
Lunch

Half-board is included in the price of this trek. Lunch, however, is not. You can get something to eat at the mountain huts along the way.
Travel Insurance

Your international travel insurance is your own responsibility. Discuss your itinerary with the insurance company before your trek.
Personal expenses

Personal expenses on such as souvenirs, drinks, and other similar expenses are for your own account.
