Hintertux - Friesenberghaus

Duration: 07:00 h
Distance: 13.8 km
Ascent: 1580 m
Descent: 650 m

Your high-alpine journey begins in Hintertux with a long, gentle ascent through a shaded forest. After leaving the valley behind, you will follow a beautiful, rocky path before reaching a scenic trail that winds upwards past a spectacular waterfall. This is the perfect place to cool off on hot days!

The trail then continues towards the Veil Waterfall, where the interplay of water and light creates a magical spectacle. This section is popular with marmots, so keep an ear out for their whistles and look out for them in the rocky pastures of the Weitental valley, where their countless burrows are scattered across the alpine meadows. After passing the waterfall, a steep, secured rocky path leads into the upper Weitental valley.

The path narrows before reaching the historic Tuxer Jochhaus hut, which boasts glacier views and is the perfect place to rest. From here, the route joins part of the Berliner Höhenweg trek, climbing steadily towards the Hintertux Glacier area. Rest on the benches and enjoy the views of the glacier. Continue past Spannagelhaus, cross the Wanderweg 526 bridge, and climb uphill through multiple zigzag sections. Near the end, take in the views of the Hoher Riffler, cross the final bridge near Friesenberg Lake, and you will reach your destination: Friesenberghaus Hut.

Duration: 05:20 h
Distance: 13 km
Ascent: 470 m
Descent: 660 m

This stage heads south along a spectacular alpine route, offering both challenges and stunning viewpoints. Shortly after leaving Friesenberghaus, you will cross a bridge over a stream and walk along part of the renowned Berliner Höhenweg route. You will also enjoy stunning views of the Hoher Riffler. Next, you will pass beneath an impressive frozen wall (3,300 m), home to the Hintertux Glacier and its lift stations.

After that, you will reach a rest area with panoramic views; the perfect place to catch your breath before crossing the famous suspension bridge above the Schlegeisspeicher reservoir, which is framed by glaciers and peaks. This is a popular spot for photos! Later on, you will find more excellent views, a small fountain for refreshment and another rest area before reaching a peaceful plateau. Follow path 528, cross another stream and climb up the stone steps if necessary.

Towards the end of the day, you will descend into the picturesque Pfitsch Valley. The highlight of the stage? Crossing the Austrian–Italian border at Passo di Vizze or Pfitscherjoch!
