Ready to disappear into the wild side of the Dolomites? The Dolomiti Friulane Traverse is one for the books. This rugged 5-day trek cuts right through the remote Friulane Dolomites, a place where you might hike for hours without seeing another soul. These peaks are sharp, remote, and untamed — the kind of landscape that makes other Dolomites treks look like strolls in the park. Expect long, demanding hiking days and nights in authentic rifugios like Pussa, Flaiban Pacherini, Giaf, and Padova.
The Dolomiti Friulane Traverse is an expert-level adventure for serious hikers who love wild places. Each day challenges your legs and your mind, and rewards you with silence, sharp ridgelines, and unforgettable views. Start your adventure at Rifugio Pussa and finish at Rifugio Padova, crossing the heart of the Friulane Dolomites on your way.
Step out of Claut and the wilderness wastes no time pulling you in. What starts as a quiet ascent soon slips into rugged solitude—deep woods giving way to raw, untamed slopes, where the silence feels thick enough to touch. A glimpse of the Ai Caduti monument offers a fleeting brush with history, but the trail keeps you moving, luring you higher with the promise of alpine clarity. And then, just when your legs start asking why, the forest peels back and Rifugio Pussa reveals itself—a quiet haven tucked beneath towering peaks, where tired hikers swap stories over steaming plates and tomorrow’s miles feel far away.
But don’t be fooled. This isn’t just a pleasant stroll. Along the way, a tricky stretch of narrow, exposed path reminds you that the Dolomiti Veneto-Friulane mean business. Sure-footedness, grit, and a healthy respect for the mountains aren’t optional here—they’re the entry fee for this corner of the Alps, where the reward is solitude, stunning vistas, and that unmistakable sense of earning every step.
The trail from Rifugio Pussa starts gently, drawing you into the forest where, just 500 meters in, a small waterfall offers an early reward. As you climb past Casera Col de Post at 3.2 km, the landscape opens up, and by 4 km, CAI Trail 366 delivers your first big views over the Settimana valley. This is where the real ascent begins, turning the hike from pleasant to powerful.
At 6.5 km, the peaceful Bivacco Casera Pramaggiore welcomes you for a well-earned break, surrounded by greenery and silence. A final climb leads to Forcella Rua Alta, the highest point of the day, where the wild peaks of the Dolomites stretch to the horizon. From here, the descent starts steep and technical—400 meters of rugged, exposed terrain that call for steady feet and clear focus.
The trail eases as you cross Passo di Suola, a quiet mountain pass, before winding down through forests and meadows. The final 1.5 kilometers lead gently to Rifugio Flaiban Pacherini, where you can rest, refuel, and enjoy the deep stillness of the mountains.
The trail starts steeply from Rifugio Flaiban Pacherini, climbing through rugged terrain to Forcella d’Inferno at 2,170 meters—a dramatic pass connecting the Brica and Guerra valleys. From there, the path drops briefly before the next ascent to Forcella Val di Brica, a quieter saddle with wide views over remote alpine valleys.
Around the 4 km mark, the landscape softens into the Canpuros meadow, a fairy-tale clearing that bursts into color with wildflowers in summer, surrounded by rocks and forest. Beyond the meadow, the trail opens up to stunning views over the Cimoliana Valley, one of the stage’s most breathtaking moments.
A final gentle climb takes you to Forcella Urtisiel, a peaceful little pass between two valleys, before the path eases into a gradual descent towards Rifugio Giaf—a fitting end to a day packed with steep climbs, quiet meadows, and unforgettable Dolomite views.
You leave Rifugio Giaf and the trail wastes no time heading uphill. In the first 2 kilometers, it climbs steeply toward Forcella del Cason, a rugged mountain pass where loose rocks and exposed sections demand your focus. But when you reach the top, the reward is instant—vast valleys and jagged peaks stretching far into the distance.
The climb continues toward Forcella Monfalcone di Forni, where the Dolomites truly steal the show. Surrounded by sharp spires and dramatic cliffs, this is one of the Friulian Dolomites’ finest viewpoints—wild, remote, and breathtaking.
From here, the trail shifts. The hardest work is behind you, and a steady 4 km descent leads through quieter, forested paths. Step by step, the terrain softens until Rifugio Padova comes into view—your well-earned rest at the end of a big day in the mountains.
You leave Rifugio Padova and right away the trail rolls you through forest and rock, warming up with short climbs and dips. After 4 km, you reach Casera Vedorcia, where the trees open up and the Spalti di Toro steal the show—sharp peaks, raw and wild.
From there, the trail softens. It’s a steady 8 km descent through quiet forests and open stretches, where you catch your first glimpse of Calalzo di Cadore and the shimmering Lago di Cadore below.
A final push takes you across the Lago di Cadore Bridge, with the water glinting beneath your feet, before the last easy kilometers roll you into town. A trek full of contrasts—and one you won’t soon forget.
