Alta Valsesia Familia

Duration: 4 days
Trails: T2 trails
Distance: 0 - 10 km per day
Ascent per day: 250 - 500 m ascent per day

> Discover Italy’s quietest Alpine valley
> Sleep in charming rifugi surrounded by waterfalls
> A real family adventure with just enough spice

Imagine crossing a wooden bridge over a roaring glacial stream, looking up to see a herd of ibex silhouetted against the granite skyline. Alta Valsesia is wild, untamed and surprisingly kid-friendly. This is Italy's highest valley, tucked beneath Monte Rosa, and this tour lets you explore it with your family while still feeling like you're on a proper alpine adventure.

The Alta Valsesia Familia is designed for active families who want a bit more than a stroll. Four days, three nights, and just enough trail to earn your polenta and cheese. You’ll hike from one mountain hut to the next, staying in authentic rifugi Crespi-Calderini and Pastore, with waterfalls and marmots never far away. The first day includes some altitude, and day 3 has a short T3-rated section, so it's not for toddlers, but older kids who like a bit of challenge will love it.

Day
1

Alagna Valsesia - Rifugio Città di Mortara

Duration: 03:00 h
Distance: 3.85 km
Ascent: 760 m

This ascent links the traditional village in the Sesia valley with a panoramic hut high above the treeline. The walk is short yet quite steep, ideal for introducing older children to real mountain terrain. Forest shade, rushing streams and open pastures alternate along the way, while the view of the surrounding peaks widens with every turn. Some hikers may prefer to use the lift from the village instead, but following the path on foot makes the arrival at the refuge feel especially earned.

From the bus stop in Alagna, follow narrow streets between wooden Walser houses to the bridge over the Sesia. Cross to the opposite bank and pick up the signed path to the hut. A stony mule track climbs in tight zigzags through larch and spruce forest, soon leaving the last houses behind. The trail crosses small streams, then reaches the pastures of Fum d’Boudma and Fum Diss, before traversing above Alpe Weng di Olen and the meadows of Alpe Zaroli and Alpe Pierno, gaining around seven hundred metres in height.

Emerging from the forest, the path finally reaches a broad grassy shoulder below the rocky summit of I Torru. The hut stands here on a natural balcony, with wide views down to Alagna and across to the peaks closing the valley. After checking into your room, you can relax on the terrace, let children explore the nearby pastures or take a short stroll to neighbouring viewpoints before enjoying a warm meal and a quiet night at altitude.

2

Rifugio Città di Mortara - Rifugio Crespi-Calderini

Duration: 03:30 h
Distance: 5.1 km
Ascent: 440 m
Descent: 550 m

This varied mountain traverse connects two high huts on a balcony path above the valley. A mix of gentle climbs, steeper zigzags and a more technical section with fixed rope makes the route more demanding and suitable only for surefooted families. Views stretch to Corno del Camoscio, Corno Rosso and the rugged ridge around the Olen pass, while the roar of Cascata delle Pisse accompanies part of the descent.

From Rifugio Città di Mortara the way climbs steadily across grassy slopes, soon reaching a rocky spur where the T3 section begins. Here the narrow path traverses broken ground, helped by a fixed rope that provides security for hands. Beyond this passage, the trail continues more comfortably across open terrain and small streams, gradually rising about two hundred metres to a broad shoulder with superb views into the wild basin below.

The route then turns gently downhill, following a clearer path over pastures towards the noise of Cascata delle Pisse, which plunges in stages down the opposite cliffs. After a final traverse above the gorge, the path descends more directly through meadows and scattered boulders. Soon the red roofs of Rifugio Crespi-Calderini appear on a small terrace, where you can settle into the hut, enjoy the stream nearby and watch evening light on the surrounding peaks.

Rifugio Crespi-Calderini - Rifugio Pastore

Duration: 01:40 h
Distance: 3.05 km
Ascent: 80 m
Descent: 330 m

This is a short and fairly relaxed mountain walk, linking two cosy huts along the Vallone di Bors. The route mostly follows the valley floor beside lively streams, with only gentle climbs and a longer descent towards the end. Steep rock walls rise on both sides while small alpages and clusters of larch add variety. It is an ideal stage for recovering energy, spotting marmots and enjoying the wide views back to the high peaks around Corno d’Olen and the Monte Rosa group.

From Rifugio Crespi-Calderini the path first climbs very slightly across grassy slopes, then bends into the Vallone di Bors. A clear track runs close to the torrent, crossing side streams and passing the pastures of Alpe Murifitcar. The surroundings feel pleasantly wild, with boulders, small waterfalls and occasional marshy patches where flowers grow in late summer. Further on, the route undulates through scattered larches and passes Cascina Lunga and other small alms while gradually losing around three hundred metres of height.

The descent becomes gentler as the valley opens and the path approaches the meadows around Rifugio Pastore. Soon the first buildings and wooden footbridges appear and the track curves towards the hut, set on a broad grassy terrace. After arriving, you can settle into your room, let children play on the flat pastures or visit the small chapel nearby. The hut’s terrace is a perfect place to spend a lazy afternoon, with constant views of waterfalls and the high cirque at the head of the valley.

Rifugio Pastore - Alagna Valsesia

Duration: 01:40 h
Distance: 4.12 km
Descent: 400 m

This final section returns from the quiet mountain basin to the lively village in the valley. Almost all of the walking is downhill on good paths and quiet roads, making it a gentle end to the tour. Views remain dominated by the Monte Rosa group behind you, while ahead the valley widens and cultivated slopes appear. Along the way you pass a beautifully painted oratory that marks the transition from high pastures to the inhabited world.

From Rifugio Pastore, follow the main track downhill beside the river, crossing wooden bridges and passing scattered alpages. The path descends through larch woodland and open clearings before meeting a small road. This winds past the Oratory of Saint Mary Magdalene with its colourful frescoes, then continues between chalets and ski buildings such as Mansarda Monte Rosa Ski. Gradually the valley broadens and the route follows lanes and paths through meadows and isolated farms towards the first houses of Alagna.

At the edge of the village, the track becomes a paved street lined with traditional Walser houses and balconies full of flowers. Continue into the historic centre, where shops and cafés cluster around the main square and near the river. Accommodation is scattered through these streets, making it easy to reach your overnight stay. After dropping your pack, you can celebrate the end of the circuit with a stroll through the alleys and perhaps a final drink or ice cream.
