Distance: 0 - 10 km per day
Ascent per day: 500 - 1000 m ascent per day

> Hike the Alta Valsesia Traverse from hut to hut

> Start in the wild and end in the vibrant village of Alagna

You wake up in a mountain hut surrounded by ibex and glacier views. The early light glows on the Monte Rosa massif as you zip up your jacket and step out into the quiet of Valsesia’s high trails. Four days. Three rifugi. And a route that links the hidden gems of the Piedmontese Alps. This 4-day hut-to-hut trekking route in the Alps is for the keen hiker who wants Dolomites-style magic, minus the crowds.

The Alta Valsesia Intermediate is a 4-day point-to-point hike that begins at the Staffel bus stop above Riva Valdobbia and ends in Alagna Valsesia. You stay in welcoming rifugi like Gabiet, Orestes, and Pastore, each tucked away deep in alpine wilderness. With daily distances ranging between 4 and 12 kilometers, the real challenge of this trek lies in the altitude differences. Expect demanding ascents, steep descents, and significant elevation gain and loss throughout the route. This is a rewarding hut-to-hut adventure for intermediate hikers who are comfortable with mountain terrain and looking for big views, rugged trails, and a proper Italian alpine atmosphere.

1

Cable car Alagna–Pianalunga–Salati top station - Rifugio Gabiet

Duration: 04:30 h
Distance: 8.46 km
Ascent: 460 m
Descent: 1060 m

A high alpine opener that feels serious from the very first step. You leave the cablecar top station and follow rough balcony paths above two valleys, always with Monte Rosa nearby. Scrambly T3 sections, a few fixed cables and steep slopes demand good judgement and a cool head. It is a compact but intense introduction, more ridge adventure than warm up stroll.

The route first climbs gently on marked paths to Salati Pass and the quieter Passo dei Salati, where wide views open towards Valle d’Aosta. From there you drop more steeply over boulder fields to the silent, abandoned Rifugio Città di Vigevano. A rough traverse and a final stony climb take you up to Colle Zube at 2874 metres, perched between wild cirques.

From Colle Zube the trail dives into the next valley on loose zigzags, then softens into easier meadows and smoother ground. A stream keeps you company as the path curves towards the blue of the Gabiet lake. With lifts above and water below, you roll the final metres into Rifugio Gabiet, a welcoming hut that feels much friendlier than the terrain you crossed.

Rifugio Gabiet - Orestes Hut

Duration: 04:35 h
Distance: 8.89 km
Ascent: 800 m
Descent: 540 m

This section links two huts with a playful line of paths, always flirting with the glaciers of Monte Rosa. You leave a lively basin and move into quieter ground where waterfalls, rocky passes and the newborn Lys river share the stage. It feels wild without becoming extreme, perfect for hikers who enjoy some spice in their trail days.

From the hut you follow a clear path that soon steepens towards a lively waterfall, a great excuse to drop the pack for a moment. Higher up, sturdy markers guide you across steeper slopes and short rocky steps where hands help for balance. The climb continues on broken ground to Colle Salza, hanging right under shimmering ice and often visited by ibex.

Beyond the pass the landscape opens and you can trace the Lys from tiny trickles to a stronger stream below. The path turns gentler, wandering across lawns and scattered rocks while the view grows wider with every step. A last easy rise delivers you to Orestes Hut, beautifully perched on a terrace with a grandstand view onto the Monte Rosa wall.

Orestes Hütte - Rifugio Pastore

Duration: 05:10 h
Distance: 11.5 km
Ascent: 380 m
Descent: 1400 m

Today’s stage takes you from the high alpine surroundings of Orestes Hütte to Rifugio Pastore, descending through the dramatic landscapes of Alta Valsesia. Although the day is shorter in distance, the terrain remains demanding and technical, with rugged mountain trails, rocky sections, and steep descents requiring concentration throughout the hike.

The route begins high in the mountains beneath the glaciers and rocky peaks surrounding the Monte Rosa massif. Early on, you traverse alpine terrain near the Col d’Olen, where panoramic views stretch across the surrounding summits and valleys. Narrow mountain paths wind across rocky slopes and high passes, with several uneven and exposed sections adding to the adventurous character of the day.

As the stage continues, the trail gradually descends into greener alpine landscapes filled with streams, waterfalls, and mountain meadows. Along the way, you pass remote mountain huts and scenic viewpoints, while the sound of rushing water accompanies much of the descent. The terrain remains rocky in places, especially on the steeper sections lower down the valley.

The final kilometres lead you into the peaceful alpine setting of Rifugio Pastore, surrounded by forests and towering peaks. After a long descent from the high mountains, the refuge offers a welcoming place to relax and enjoy the quieter atmosphere of the valley floor while reflecting on another spectacular day in the Italian Alps.

Rifugio Pastore - Alagna Valsesia

Duration: 01:40 h
Distance: 4.12 km
Descent: 400 m

This final section returns from the quiet mountain basin to the lively village in the valley. Almost all of the walking is downhill on good paths and quiet roads, making it a gentle end to the tour. Views remain dominated by the Monte Rosa group behind you, while ahead the valley widens and cultivated slopes appear. Along the way you pass a beautifully painted oratory that marks the transition from high pastures to the inhabited world.

From Rifugio Pastore, follow the main track downhill beside the river, crossing wooden bridges and passing scattered alpages. The path descends through larch woodland and open clearings before meeting a small road. This winds past the Oratory of Saint Mary Magdalene with its colourful frescoes, then continues between chalets and ski buildings such as Mansarda Monte Rosa Ski. Gradually the valley broadens and the route follows lanes and paths through meadows and isolated farms towards the first houses of Alagna.

At the edge of the village, the track becomes a paved street lined with traditional Walser houses and balconies full of flowers. Continue into the historic centre, where shops and cafés cluster around the main square and near the river. Accommodation is scattered through these streets, making it easy to reach your overnight stay. After dropping your pack, you can celebrate the end of the circuit with a stroll through the alleys and perhaps a final drink or ice cream.
