> Let your mountain-experienced kids take their first steps on real T3 mountain terrain
> Explore the remote and impressive Monviso region
> A 3-day adventure with enough spice and a smart lift assist

That moment when your kids move confidently over a narrow mountain path, focused, curious, and loving every second? That’s the one you’ll remember. The Family T3 Exploration Trek is a3-day adventure in the Monviso region, designed for families ready to step beyond the basics. You start and finish in Casteldelfino and hike through quiet forests and rugged valleys, spending your nights in Rifugio Alevè and Rifugio Vallanta. Big mountains, small trails, and a proper sense of adventure. This is where hiking levels up.

This trek is perfect for families with mountain experience and kids who are comfortable on narrow and sometimes uneven paths. Day one brings a solid climb to get into the rhythm. Day two is the highlight: T3 terrain, playful technical sections, and a cable car that helps you skip around 700 meters of elevation. Smart, because it keeps the day fun and achievable. Not extreme, but definitely exciting. The final day is longer, guiding you back to Casteldelfino with tired legs and proud smiles. Ready to see what your little adventurers are made of? Andiamo!

Please note: This trek is not suitable for beginner hikers or children without mountain hiking experience. We recommend a minimum age of 10–12 years, depending on your child's experience, confidence, and fitness.

1

Casteldelfino - Rifugio Alevè

Duration: 03:50 h
Distance: 6.58 km
Ascent: 690 m
Descent: 440 m

This T3 exploration hike has a clear physical challenge right from the start. The route begins around 1,320 m and climbs steeply for the first 4 km. This is the main effort of the route, with 690 m of ascent before reaching the highest point at 2,010 m. For kids, this is the section to take slowly, with short breaks, enough water and a steady pace.

After the sustained climb, you reach Rifugio Bagnour, a good place for a proper rest before continuing. From the hut, the route leaves the high point behind and starts its longer descent. The profile drops gradually rather than falling away all at once, so the walking becomes more manageable, but the trail still needs attention, especially with tired legs after the climb.

From Rifugio Bagnour, you continue downhill for about 2.5 hours towards the artificial lake Lago di Castello and the mountain hut. This final section is less demanding than the first climb, but it is still a real descent and should not be rushed. Once you reach Lago di Castello, the hut provides a clear and welcome end point for the route.

Rifugio Alevè - Rifugio Vallanta (with chairlift)

Duration: 03:40 h
Distance: 8.2 km
Ascent: 360 m
Descent: 210 m

This stage starts easily, with a relaxed walk from Rifugio Alevè over relatively flat ground. The first section gives families time to warm up before the T3 terrain begins. Although the full profile includes serious height gain, the chairlift removes about 700 m of ascent, which makes the stage much more suitable for mountain-experienced children. After the lift, the challenge is not steep climbing, but careful footwork on uneven alpine paths.

From Rifugio Alevè, you descend gently towards the artificial lake at the foot of the Maddalena-Serviero chairlift. This first part is a pleasant stroll, with time to walk around the lake before reaching the lift after about 3.3 km. The chairlift takes you up to 2340 m, skipping the long climb that would otherwise make the route much heavier for families.

Once at the top, the route changes character. The path is not flat, but it flows through the terrain with steady ups and downs rather than steep climbs or descents. It follows a narrow white trail across grassy mountain fields, with uneven sections, loose stones and rougher ground. Later, Rifugio Vallanta appears in the distance beside Lago Bealera Funsa. Arrive slowly, settle in, and use the remaining time to explore the mountain area around the hut.

Rifugio Vallanta - Casteldelfino

Duration: 05:05 h
Distance: 11.9 km
Ascent: 80 m
Descent: 1170 m

Today is all about hiking down, following a clear line back toward Casteldelfino. You start in the same direction as the day before, but at the fork you take the left-hand path instead of heading right. From there, the route begins its gradual return through open mountain terrain. Expect grassy patches, broad fields and far-reaching views as you leave the higher valley behind and work your way back toward the starting point.

The path is easy to follow as it descends through open slopes and mountain pastures. After a little less than 4 km, you reach the settlement of Grange Souliereres. A little further down, you cross the Vallanta stream and the artificial lake starts to appear in the distance. This section keeps the same open character for a while, with enough space around you to enjoy the views and settle into the rhythm of the descent.

You can also revisit Rifugio Alevè for a short break or a drink before continuing. From there, the final stretch is about 4.5 km and straightforward, following the stream back toward Casteldelfino. As you get closer, the mountain setting slowly gives way to the valley and the end of the route. It is an easy, practical finish after the higher terrain of the previous stages.
