> Hike the Hard Carros de Foc in 5 epic stages
> Cross rugged cols and high passes deep in the Pyrenees
> We’ll reserve all your nights in the best refugis of Aigüestortes

Imagine starting your day above a sea of clouds, with nothing but jagged peaks, icy lakes, and the crunch of your boots for company. This isn’t a walk in the park. This is the Hard Carros de Foc. A 5-day, no-nonsense loop through the high Pyrenees of Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici. Think long days, big elevation, and the kind of solitude you only get when the rest of the world is far below you.

The Hard Carros de Foc is the grown-up, turned-up version of the classic route. Fewer days, tougher stages, and more time above the treeline. You’ll overnight in some of the most beautifully remote refugis in the Spanish Pyrenees, from Amitges to Ventosa i Calvell, and finish in Espot with a head full of views you won’t forget. If you’ve done the Alps, the Dolomites, or even the Alta Via 2, and want a Pyrenean punch this is it.

Itinerary

Day
1

Espot - Refugi d'Amitges

Duration: 04:20 h
Distance: 11.8 km
Ascent: 1040 m

This first section climbs from Espot into the wild core of Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. After leaving the village, the route follows the Riu Escrita through shady forest and open meadows before reaching the first high lakes. Waterfalls, granite towers and hanging valleys appear one after another, while distant peaks form an impressive skyline. The day ends at a beautifully located mountain refuge above a cluster of sparkling tarns.

From Espot the trail climbs gently on tracks toward les Carrelas, soon entering pine forest above the valley. It continues through Prat de Pierro and the pastures of Pleta de Xaulet, where clearings offer first views of Els Encantats. The gradient steepens along the Pujada de Suiespe, following the Riu Escrita to the shore of Estany de Sant Maurici. A balcony path then rises beside the Ratera waterfall, passing Estany de Ratera and Estany de la Bassa on the way to the upper cirque.

In the final stretch the path winds among polished slabs and small tarns as the valley broadens into a high basin. A last short ascent leads to the stone refuge of Amitges, perched on a rocky knoll above Estany d’Amitges. From the terrace you can enjoy wide views toward Els Encantats and neighbouring peaks while the surrounding lakes reflect the evening light, before settling into the cosy common room and shared dormitories.

Refugi d'Amitges - Refugi Ventosa i Cavell

Duration: 06:05 h
Distance: 13.9 km
Ascent: 710 m
Descent: 870 m

This high mountain section links two classic refuges on a spectacular traverse of the central Pyrenees. From the rocky basin of Amitges the route threads between countless glacial lakes, crosses wild cols and skirts the foot of sharp granite peaks. Long stretches on narrow paths, sections of boulder and occasional snow patches in early season give the day a challenging and adventurous feel, rewarded throughout by wide views and crystal clear water.

From the refuge the path contours above the lakes of the Coma d’Amitges, then climbs gently across rocky slopes and grass patches toward the Cometes de Ratera. It continues on a wilder trail, undulating between slabs and small tarns to reach Estanh Obago, set in a shaded hollow beneath Pic de Ratera. A steeper ascent leads into the Coma deth Port de Caldes, where the col offers superb views over the surrounding summits and the Colomers lake basin.

The descent from the pass follows cairned paths and occasional stone steps past Lac Redon and Estanh Long de Colomers, gradually easing as the valley widens. Near the lower lakes the trail turns across rough pasture and granite outcrops toward Estany Clot. A final short climb brings you to the Ventosa i Calvell hut, perched above a large dark lake and facing Montardo, an inviting place to rest on the terrace before settling into the cosy dormitories.

Refugi Ventosa i Cavell - Refugi de l'Estany Llong

Duration: 04:55 h
Distance: 8.8 km
Ascent: 650 m
Descent: 850 m

This demanding high mountain route crosses one of the wildest passes of the circuit. From the granite basin around Ventosa i Calvell the path climbs toward a rugged barrier of cliffs and broken rock, then plunges into a remote valley of lakes and waterfalls. The scenery is dominated by the serrated ridges of Pic de Contraix and Pic de Comalesbienes, with long, steep sections that require sure footing and good weather.

From the hut the trail traverses above the shoreline toward the grassy hollow of Pleta de Colieto, then follows a rough path beside the outlet streams to Estany Gran de Colieto. The climb becomes steeper on the Costera de Contraix, zigzagging across loose stone and occasional slabs toward the narrow notch of the Contraix pass. After the final rocky ramp you crest the skyline and look down on the dark waters of Estany de Contraix far below.

From the pass a demanding descent on cairned paths leads beside waterfalls and smooth slabs into the valley of La Ribereta. The terrain gradually softens as you pass the Cova dels Pastors and enter fragrant pine forest, with streams tumbling between boulders. A final gentle stretch along the river brings you to the meadows around Estany Llong, where the stone refuge stands in an open clearing, a quiet place to relax and watch the evening light on the surrounding walls.

Refugi de l'Estany Llong - Refugi Josep Maria Blanc

Duration: 07:35 h
Distance: 16.3 km
Ascent: 1210 m
Descent: 880 m

This long alpine section links the quiet basin of Estany Llong with the lakes around Refugi Josep Maria Blanc. The route follows rivers and forest paths through Parc Nacional d’Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici before climbing into high, rocky terrain. A major ascent over a rugged pass opens superb views of granite peaks and blue tarns. The day ends in a spectacular cirque, where the refuge stands above turquoise lakes.

From the refuge the trail descends gently along the valley floor, passing meadows and scattered pines toward the wide plain of Aigüestortes. After crossing the river it turns into Les Marrades del Port, a steep series of zigzags that climbs to balconies above the valley. The path continues past viewpoints like Racó de l’Estany and the grassy terraces of Pletiu dels Cantals, then reaches the darker waters of Estany de Monastero below the surrounding ridges.

Beyond the lake a final push leads to a high pass that opens into the wild Coma de Peguera. From here a rocky descent passes Estany de Liastra and other small tarns scattered among slabs and pastures. The trail finally traverses above a chain of brilliant lakes before dropping to Refugi Josep Maria Blanc, beautifully situated on a small peninsula where you can relax on the terrace and watch the evening light over the water.
