> Hike the Alta Valsesia Traverse from hut to hut
> Spend the night in remote rifugi at the foot of Monte Rosa
> Start in the wild and end in the vibrant village of Alagna

You wake up in a mountain hut surrounded by ibex and glacier views. The early light glows on the Monte Rosa massif as you zip up your jacket and step out into the quiet of Valsesia’s high trails. Four days. Four rifugi. And a route that links the hidden gems of the Piedmontese Alps. This is a trek for the keen hiker who wants Dolomites-style magic, minus the crowds.

The Alta Valsesia Intermediate is a 4-day point-to-point hike that begins at the Staffel bus stop above Riva Valdobbia and ends in Alagna Valsesia. You stay in welcoming rifugi like Orestes, Città di Mortara, and Pastore, each tucked away deep in alpine wilderness. With days between 4 and 8 kilometers and moderate elevation changes, this is a gentle yet rewarding hut-to-hut for intermediate hikers who prefer short distances, big views, and a proper Italian mountain vibe.

Staffel Bus stop - Rifugio Orestes

Duration: 04:10 h
Distance: 7.08 km
Ascent: 1030 m
Descent: 240 m

This section climbs from the roadhead above the valley into a high cirque of rock and grass where a welcoming hut waits. After leaving the last houses, the route quickly gains height, moving from larch forest to open slopes with wide views towards distant peaks. It is a sustained and sometimes steep ascent, rewarded throughout by waterfalls, rushing streams and the growing sense of entering wilder ground.

From the bus stop, follow the track uphill past a few buildings, then join a marked path that climbs in tight zigzags through larch and spruce above the torrent. The trail emerges beside pastures and continues north, crossing streams and traversing the valley flank. Higher up, the terrain becomes rockier and views open towards Punta Talcio and Alta Luce while the path climbs in long sweeps across the slope.

A final traverse leads into a broad, gently sloping basin below the ridge. The wooden buildings of the hut appear ahead on a grassy knoll, surrounded by boulders and small pools. Accommodation here is cosy and informal, with a terrace that looks out over the valley you have climbed from and towards the skyline of surrounding peaks, a perfect place to rest and watch the light change.

Rifugio Orestes - Rifugio Città di Mortara

Duration: 03:45 h
Distance: 8.24 km
Ascent: 370 m
Descent: 1030 m

This section links two high huts along a panoramic route that circles the upper valley. Leaving the first hut, the trail makes a short climb to gain an airy balcony path beneath the ridges. The middle part of the walk undulates across open alpine terrain before a steady descent to a grassy shelf dotted with old stone buildings, where the next hut sits in a quiet hollow.

From the hut, climb gently on a clear path towards the wide plateau above, passing small tarns and crossing ski pistes. The way turns south, contouring beneath Corno del Camoscio and Corno Rosso with views into both Valsesia and the neighbouring valley. After reaching the highest point near a broad col, descend on zigzags through rubble and grass to easier pastures and an old mule track.

The mule track leads between low stone walls and grazing cattle to a cluster of renovated buildings on a natural terrace. Here stands the hut, partly sheltered by a rocky knoll and looking out over the valley. Inside you find simple rooms and a welcoming dining area, while outside the meadows and nearby chapel offer quiet spots to sit in the evening and watch shadows lengthen on the surrounding peaks.

Rifugio Città di Mortara - Rifugio Pastore

Duration: 03:35 h
Distance: 6.68 km
Ascent: 420 m
Descent: 800 m

This stage takes you from the high terrace of the previous hut into the wide upper basin of Valsesia. After a first descent, the route climbs again to cross a shoulder beneath rocky summits, then drops steadily towards the valley floor. The character shifts from exposed slopes and scree to gentler meadows and forest, finishing at a beautifully situated hut with impressive views of the Monte Rosa range.

From the terrace, follow the path descending through pastures and scattered boulders to reach a small valley with streams. The trail then turns north east and begins a steady climb towards a broad shoulder beneath La Malfatta and Corno d’Olen. Crossing this open ground, you contour above steep slopes, with occasional short rocky sections, before the path bends into a side valley filled with rivulets and alpine flowers.

A well trodden track now descends beside the river, passing wooden bridges and the first larches. As the valley floor widens, the stone buildings of Alpe Pile appear and the hut comes into view on a grassy rise. Accommodation here is comfortable and lively, with a chapel and pastures nearby and a superb panorama of glaciers and rock walls forming the backdrop to your evening at this welcoming stop.

Rifugio Pastore - Alagna Valsesia

Duration: 01:25 h
Distance: 4.059 km
Descent: 390 m

The final section is a gentle descent from the alpine pastures back to the valley town. It provides a relaxed ending, following old paths and lanes beside the river while the high walls of Monte Rosa recede behind you. The scenery gradually softens, moving from open meadows and farm buildings into mixed woodland and finally the traditional streets of a historic Walser village.

From the hut, descend on a stone mule track that winds between chalets and barns, soon entering denser forest above the torrent. The path follows the valley southwards, occasionally opening to viewpoints towards Il Torru and Monte Tagliaterro. Lower down, you cross bridges and pass small roadside chapels before joining a quiet lane that leads past scattered houses towards the centre of the village.

The lane brings you directly to the heart of the settlement, close to the church tower and wooden Walser houses. Here you can reach guesthouses and small hotels within a short walk, as well as shops and cafés for a celebratory drink or snack. The accommodation in the village offers a comfortable bed and the chance to explore its narrow streets before and after your night’s rest.
