This 8-day trek in Jotunheimen National Park is perfect for hikers seeking to experience Norway’s most dramatic landscapes. Starting at Gjendesheim and ending at the iconic Besseggen Ridge, the route takes you through rugged terrain, serene valleys, and high mountain passes. Highlights include the tranquil Rondvatnet Lake, the panoramic views from Bukkelægret, and the dramatic contrast of lakes Gjende and Bessvatn. The trail weaves through a variety of landscapes, from rocky ridges to lush meadows, the perfect balance of challenge, comfort and Nordic charm!

Each night, welcoming lodges provide hearty Norwegian meals and a cozy place to rest, adding comfort to your adventure. Perfect for hikers seeking a blend of challenge, breathtaking nature, and Nordic culture, this trek is an unforgettable journey into the heart of Jotunheimen’s untamed beauty. While some parts of the route, graded up to T3, can be challenging - especially the roped section of the Besseggen Ridge - the comfortable rooms and full board included in the mountain huts will keep you energised.

Note: Sleeping bags are not allowed in the hut rooms. You can either bring your own or buy them on site for a worry-free experience. Please remember to use the local currency; Nordic crowns.

Arrival in Gjendesheim

Start your adventure by arriving at Gjendesheim, the largest cabin in the DNT network. Situated on the shores of Lake Gjende, this cozy cabin is the gateway to Jotunheimen National Park. Spend your first night in comfort, enjoy a hearty dinner, and rest up for the trek ahead.

From Gjendesheim to Glitterheim

After breakfast, start your walk from Gjendesheim, climbing steadily from Lake Gjende to breathtaking heights. The trail takes you through a variety of landscapes, past the tranquil lakes Bessvatnet and Russvatnet, with magnificent views along the way. As you approach the end of today's stage, be prepared for rocky terrain that will provide a rewarding challenge. Finish this leg at the welcoming Glitterheim Lodge for a hearty meal and a well-earned rest.

From Glitterheim to Spiterstulen

Duration: 09:40 h
Distance: 16 km
Ascent: 1060 m
Descent: 1340 m

Set off from Glitterheim and cross the tranquil valley. The walk offers a mix of terrain, from peaceful areas to more challenging climbs. When you reach the highest point of the day, Glittertinden at over 2,450m, the rocky landscape challenges your footing but rewards you with incredible views.

The day ends at the cozy lower Spiterstulen Lodge. Here you can relax by the nearby Visa River and take in the panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, including Galdhøpiggen. A perfect reward for an unforgettable day on the trail!

  • Full travel guide

    We will send you on your way with a digital travel guide that includes a route description for the Jotunheimen Trek, interactive hiking maps, and the most important information applicable to your trek

  • Accommodation

    During your Jotunheimen Trek, you will spend your nights in mountain huts. In the mountain huts we normally only book dormitories, but we can look into private rooms on request. If the private rooms are fully booked or not available in the hut, we automatically book a bed in dormitories for you. Please note that private rooms are more expensive and there will be an additional charge for this.

  • Full-board

    Accommodation at the huts includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We will arrange this for you as well. This allows you to travel lighter and have one less thing to worry about.

  • Traveling to and from

    You have to make your own way to the starting point. The total amount does not include personal transport.

  • Transfers

    Should you need any form of (public) transport on location, this is not part of the trekking package. This includes the use of taxi, bus, cable cars, gondolas etc.

  • Travel Insurance

    Your international travel insurance is your own responsibility. Discuss your itinerary with the insurance company before your trek.
