Family-Friendly Lasörling Höhenweg - Including accommodation before and after

Duration: 8 days
Trails: T2 trails
Distance: 0 - 10 km per day

> Relatively short distances
> Suitable for families
> Great option for a first hut-to-hut tour
> Accommodation before and after the trek is included

Welcome to the Lasörling Höhenweg. Do you have little experience in the mountains or are you with your family? Then the Lasörling Höhenweg is a fantastic way to get to know the Austrian Alps together with your children. Enjoy beautiful views of the Venedigergruppe and Großglocknergruppe and stay in Austria's most hospitable mountain huts. The distances between the mountain huts are relatively short but can be extended with short day hikes from your accommodation.

Please Note! The distances are relatively short, but it is still a hike in the mountains on a so-called 'Höhenweg'. It definitely won't be a 'walk in the park' and you will also pass some more technical sections. The trek is around 50 kilometres long and has a total ascent and descent of 3,100 meters. During this 6-day trek, you will hike between 4 and 6 hours per day. Will you join us?

Hinterbichl - Clarahütte

Duration: 05:25 h
Distance: 11.7 km
Ascent: 810 m
Descent: 100 m
We start the day with a pleasant walk towards the Islitzer Alm—perfect for a coffee break and a generous plate of Kaiserschmarrn (always a hit with kids!). From there, it’s a short stretch to the Umbalfälle, a spectacular series of waterfalls that are especially popular on sunny weekends. As you make your way along the falls, the trail gradually turns into the main ascent of the day. Wooden platforms, stairs, and viewing points add variety and excitement, especially for younger hikers, while the steady climb keeps things engaging without being overwhelming. Continuing upward, you eventually reach the Clarahütte at 2,038 metres, beautifully set amid dramatic mountain scenery.

Clarahütte - Neue Reichenbergerhütte

Duration: 05:15 h
Distance: 10.5 km
Ascent: 730 m
Descent: 180 m
On the second day, we follow the trail back a short distance before crossing the mountain river Isel—a scenic spot and a nice change of pace. From there, the route leads us into the quiet and picturesque Dabertal valley. If you're hiking in June, there's a good chance you'll come across some lingering patches of snow along the way, adding a touch of alpine charm to the landscape. About halfway through the hike, we enter the Hohe Tauern National Park. The path here is relatively flat and easy-going, making for a pleasant walk with time to take in the views. We end the day at the Neue Reichenberger Hütte, located right next to the serene Bödensee glacial lake—a peaceful and beautiful place to unwind after a rewarding day on the trail.

Neue Reichenbergerhütte - Bergerseehütte

Duration: 06:05 h
Distance: 10.5 km
Ascent: 620 m
Descent: 1010 m
Start the day with a good breakfast—this is one of the tougher stages, but also one of the most rewarding. We begin with a steady climb to the Göslewand, a striking viewpoint high above the valley. From there, it’s a short hike to the Rote Lenke, a mountain pass named after its reddish rock formations. This marks the transition from Bödensee to Kleinbachboden. The trail then heads downhill to the Michtalscharte, where you’ll get fantastic views of the Venedigergruppe. The descent makes this part a bit easier, even for those hiking with kids. After a final stretch, we reach the Bergerseehütte—beautifully located by a mountain lake and a great place to unwind after a full day on the trail.

Bergerseehütte - Lasörlinghütte

Duration: 03:45 h
Distance: 5.3 km
Ascent: 590 m
Descent: 490 m

Today’s stage is short (around 5 km), which may sound easy at first. But don’t be fooled: this is one of the most adventurous parts of the trek. The trail starts with a steep climb of over 500 metres, with cables to assist in places. As you ascend, take time to look back and enjoy the stunning views of the Bergersee and the Bergersee Hut from above. The terrain can be tricky, with loose scree and rocks, so go steady, watch your step, and don’t hesitate to pause for breaks—the stretch is short, and it’s worth taking your time. After crossing the Berger Törl Pass, the descent begins, and before long the Lasörlinghütte comes into view, inviting you to rest and enjoy the scenery.

Optional hike: If the kids still have some energy left (or you do!), you can take an optional afternoon walk to the Virgentörl and Gritzerseen. It adds about 5 km and takes roughly 3 hours, but the mountain lakes and wide-open views are definitely worth the effort.

Lasörlinghütte - Zupalseehütte

Duration: 03:10 h
Distance: 6.6 km
Ascent: 280 m
Descent: 220 m

We head east today, following a gradually ascending path. It’s a relaxed climb, and from the highest point, you’re treated to panoramic views all the way to the Zupalseehütte. On clear days, you’ll see deep into the Virgental and even catch a glimpse of the majestic Grossglocknergruppe. This is a relatively short hiking day, giving you time to rest or take on an extra adventure in the afternoon.

Optional hike: If you feel like exploring a bit more, the climb to Griften is a great option. It’s a fun excursion that takes around 2.5 hours and is doable with older kids or anyone who still has some energy to spare.

Zupalseehütte - Virgen

Duration: 04:15 h
Distance: 9.25 km
Ascent: 110 m
Descent: 1240 m
The last day's programme includes another substantial descent. No longer following the Lasörling Höhenweg, we directly hike into the valley in Virgen. The path starts with a not-too-easy descent along the Zupal Bach. Near the mountain lake, we pick up the path to the valley. As you descend, you get further and further below the tree line so you are soon hiking in the forest, which was not the case in recent days due to the altitude. Just before Virgen, you cross the Isel once more as on the first day and your hiking adventure comes to an end here. After completing your trek, make your way to Matrei in Osttirol, where your accommodation for the night has been arranged—perfect for a well-earned rest and a celebratory meal.
