Not far from Dresden, on the border with the Czech Republic and on the banks of the River Elbe, you will find one of the most beautiful examples of German nature. National Park Saxon Switzerland is home to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and this is where the Malerweg runs, a 112-kilometer hiking trail that can be walked in 8 stages.

During this 4-day hiking holiday, you will hike two stages of the Malerweg and experience the absolute highlights including the Bastei Bridge. Your stay in comfortable guesthouses and three-star hotels along the way is taken care of, and your remaining luggage will always be transported to your next accommodation. All you have to do is concentrate on the beauty of the Elbe, the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and you will never get tired of the Bastei Bridge.

Arrival in Pirna

Today you arrive in Pirna. Since it was undoubtedly a long journey here, it is best to relax at the hotel today.

2

Pirna-Liebethal - Stadt Wehlen

The hike starts at the entrance of the romantic Liebethaler Grund. You can also choose to hike this part, which will take you an extra 1.5 hours. The path follows the Wesenitz and passes the monumental Richard Wagner monument (designed by Richard Guhr, 1933) and the remains of the former Lochmühle. Then you pass the Uttewalder Grund with its famous rock gate. The path is now formed by rocks. You will pass the remains of one of the oldest castles in the region. The Malerweg runs along the Elbe to the end of this first day.

Stadt Wehlen - Hohnstein

You start by ascending the Schwarzbergweg, where you reach the resting place called "Steinerner Tisch". The building of the same name was once built by Prince Augustus der Starke as a resting place for when he went hunting. The path leads you to one of the most famous sights of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains: the Bastei. This is one of the absolute attractions of the region and from here you have a fantastic view of the landscape. You descend via a staircase. Then you will pass the Rathen rock plateau with its spectacular natural scenery. Once in Hohnstein, the castle and the Kasper Museum in the tourist office are definitely worth a visit!
