Arrival in Lucca

Today you are expected in the city of Lucca, the historic capital of the area. The city walls wrap around its narrow streets and the vibrant Piazza dell’Anfiteatro. Take time to stroll along the ramparts and do not forget to pay the cathedral of San Martino a visit. Seek out the small carved labyrinth on the wall. Medieval pilgrims traced its winding path with a fingertip as a symbolic prologue to their adventure. Find it and let the journey begin here before you shoulder your backpack.

Lucca - Altopascio

Duration: 04:40 h
Distance: 18.4 km
Ascent: 40 m
Descent: 50 m

The walk starts within the city walls of Lucca. Soon you leave the stones behind and head out into the open, where ditches, vegetable gardens and orchards slowly pass you by. It is a relatively gentle warm up, meant to let your feet and mind get used to walking and to discover Tuscany step by step.

You follow quiet roads past Antraccoli and Capannori, with churches, small squares and cosy old farmhouses. At the parish church in Capannori you can take a short break at one of the many pilgrims’ labyrinths on this journey. After that it becomes quieter: after Porcari the path winds along farm tracks between fields, vineyards and canals, with the occasional short stretch beside a busier road, so keep an eye out there!

Just before the end, the old abbey of Badia Pozzeveri appears, a lovely spot for one last break in the shade of cypresses. After that you soon walk into Altopascio, passing the church of San Jacopo and the remains of the medieval hospital that overlook the square. You turn off towards your accommodation for the night and end the day with a shower, a glass of wine and the sounds of the lively village around you.

Altopascio - San Miniato

Duration: 07:35 h
Distance: 28.9 km
Ascent: 280 m
Descent: 170 m

You leave Altopascio on easy paths through woodland and fields before turning towards the Arno plain. The day unfolds gently at first, with long straight tracks and the occasional bell tower on the horizon. Later, the hills rise ahead and the silhouette of San Miniato appears on its ridge, suggesting the finish for today.

After leaving town you cross the flat land of marshes and fields, following lanes to the woods of Bosco di Tanali. A quiet track leads to Ponte a Cappiano with its arched Medici bridge and old pilgrim hostel. Beyond the canal you continue on farm roads towards Fucecchio, then climb gradually to a low ridge around 120 metres, before descending again to San Miniato Basso on the Arno plain.

From here the route saves the steepest work for the final stretch as it winds up through olive groves and lanes to the old town on the hill. The climb of roughly 100 metres might feel a bit sharper after a long day, yet the great views are a lovely reward. At the top you wander into stone streets, find your accommodation and enjoy sunset colours over the valley with some well earned rest.

San Miniato - Gambassi Terme

Duration: 07:00 h
Distance: 24.7 km
Ascent: 580 m
Descent: 400 m

You leave the hilltop streets of San Miniato and quickly trade stone for soil as the route dives into the soft Tuscan countryside. Gentle ridges, vineyards and olive groves set the tone, with wide views whenever the path climbs. It is a quieter, more contemplative walk, with rolling hills that slowly guide you away from the Arno and toward the heart of the Val d’Elsa.

The Romanesque church of Coiano invites a pause, its simple stone walls watching over fields and cypresses. Later the path threads past scattered farmsteads and tiny chapels, with short ups and downs that keep the legs awake but never feel too demanding.

Closer to Gambassi Terme the terrain rises more firmly and a final climb of roughly 200 metres leads through olive groves and fragments of forest. At the top you slip into the old centre, where your accommodation is located.
