Upon reaching Pienza – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and famed for its Pecorino cheese – you can stroll through narrow streets and experience the unique charm of this Tuscan treasure.

Today’s walk is full of highlights. From Pienza, you’ll descend through olive groves and cypress-lined paths to the iconic Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta, then continue past a Gladiator filming location before reaching San Quirico d'Orcia — a great spot for coffee or lunch. After a final climb with stunning views back over the town, you’ll pass through the tiny hamlet of Vignoni Alto before descending to Bagno Vignoni, famous for its ancient thermal pool and peaceful atmosphere.

Here you can feel the historical power of this region – a place that exudes tranquillity and timelessness.

Castiglione d'Orcia - Castelnuovo dell'Abate

Today’s route is a treat for nature lovers. You’ll journey through secluded paths lined with vineyards, olive groves, and narrow country lanes. The first half of the walk is a gentle descent to a riverbed, where you’ll need to cross the river on foot, as there is no bridge. If you’re unsure about crossing the river, you can always keep it safe by arranging a short taxi transfer to get you across, then continue your hike from there.

From Castiglione d’Orcia, the route leaves the village by quiet lanes and open countryside, passing near Poggio alle Case before heading west through rolling terrain. The descent continues towards the lower point of the route, followed by a steady climb back into the hills. Along the way, the map marks several viewpoints and rural highlights, including views over the Orcia Valley and towards Castelnuovo dell’Abate.

This moderately challenging walk has a few uphill sections, but the surroundings make the effort worthwhile. After the final approach, you arrive in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, where your accommodation gives you a practical place to rest after a varied route through the Tuscan countryside.

Castelnuovo dell'Abate - Montalcino

Your final hiking day begins with a quiet stretch past the beautiful Sant’Antimo Abbey, a Romanesque church tucked in the valley. From there, you continue through gentle countryside until you reach the medieval chapel of Villa a Tolli, a peaceful stop along the way.

The path winds past vineyards and begins to climb toward Passo del Lume Spento. As you gain elevation, the views open up over the surrounding hills. From the pass, you continue through a mix of forest and vineyard trails that lead you all the way to Montalcino, a hilltop town known for its world-famous Brunello wine and wide views over the Tuscan countryside.

Once in Montalcino, you can round off the trek with a Brunello wine tasting. Please note that the wine tasting is not included in your package and must be arranged and paid for by yourself.
