Quick personal advice

Hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc with children is an adventure not everyone dares to take on — and rightly so. This 170-kilometer Alpine classic is stunning, but also physically demanding: expect 6 to 8 hours of walking per day with 700 to 1,200 meters of elevation gain.

Yet, more and more families are choosing to tackle (parts of) the TMB — and with great success. The secret? The right preparation, the right pace, and realistic expectations.

With carefully selected stages, luggage transport, and rest days, the Tour du Mont Blanc becomes an unforgettable family journey — not an endurance test.

In this article, you’ll learn how to make it work, which routes are most suitable, and get practical advice from our expert Annemiek, who has been guiding families on their TMB adventures for years.

Can You Do the Tour du Mont Blanc with Children?

Yes, but only if you approach it wisely. The Tour du Mont Blanc is a true mountain trek — not comparable to a walk in Austria or the Ardennes. You’ll cover significant elevation gains each day and be exposed to changing alpine weather.

That’s why we recommend this trek only for children aged 10 to 12 and older who already have some hiking experience. They should be used to walking for several hours and enjoy being outdoors.

“The Tour du Mont Blanc with children is all about balance. You don’t choose the toughest route — you choose the most beautiful experiences.”
— Annemiek, Alps specialist at Bookatrekking

Still unsure? Start with a shorter 2–3 day version. That way, you can get a taste of the TMB without overdoing it.

The Best Routes for Families

The full 10-day Tour du Mont Blanc is usually too long for families. It’s better to choose shorter or more comfortable versions with easier stages and less physical effort.

Route Duration For Families
Eastern Tour du Mont Blanc 5 days Gentler terrain, shorter days, beautiful views
TMB Comfort 9 days Luggage transport, hotels with family rooms
Mini-TMB / Lac Blanc Trail 2–3 days Perfect introduction: easy route, spectacular scenery

Accommodation & Comfort

For families, comfort is crucial. Our TMB Comfort packages combine mountain huts with small hotels, often with private or family rooms. That means: better sleep, good food, and more energy for the next day.

The huts themselves are often surprisingly child-friendly — games, animals, fresh pasta — but it’s still a shared environment. A rest day in Courmayeur or Champex-Lac works wonders: go for a swim, take a cable car, enjoy pizza or ice cream.

Avoid the peak crowds of July and August. June and early September are quieter, with more stable weather.

Safety & Preparation

Children need to know what to expect. Prepare them well with:

  • broken-in hiking shoes and rain gear;
  • extra snacks, water, and warm layers;
  • trekking poles (also for kids!);
  • and a bit of fitness training beforehand.

In our Comfort version, we transport the luggage from hut to hut. Everyone walks only with a daypack (around 6–8 kg), which makes the adventure much lighter.

Our Bookatrekking app helps families along the way with:

  • offline navigation and GPX routes;
  • elevation profiles and daily tips;
  • emergency numbers per country;
  • real-time updates in case of weather changes or detours.

“The key is preparation. When children know what to expect, it becomes an adventure instead of an ordeal.”
— Annemiek, Alps specialist at Bookatrekking

How to Keep It Fun Along the Way

  • Turn hiking into a game: let children navigate or take photos of each stage.
  • Alternate longer days with shorter sections or cable car rides.
  • Plan a reward: ice cream, pancakes, or a swim at the end of the day.
  • Give them responsibility: their own water bottle, binoculars, or camera.

Children who feel involved have more fun — and more stamina.

Annemiek’s Golden Tips for Families

  • Plan shorter stages and rest days.
  • Stay flexible — adapt to weather, mood, and energy levels.
  • Let children carry their own small backpack (keep it light!).
  • Bring snacks they really enjoy.
  • And always pack an extra pair of shoelaces
