Family-Friendly Lasörling Höhenweg

Duration: 6 days
Trails: T2 trails
Distance: 0 - 10 km per day
Ascent per day: 500 - 1000 m ascent per day

> Manageable distances for families with alpine experience
> Varied trails through rugged terrain, forests and high mountain views
> Cozy huts and a real taste of alpine adventure

The Lasörling Höhenweg is the perfect introduction to hut-to-hut hiking in Austria for families. This 6-day route offers scenic trails, breathtaking views of the Venedigergruppe and Großglocknergruppe, and cozy huts that welcome hikers of all ages. With a pace designed for younger legs and curious minds, it’s the ideal mix of nature, movement, and memorable moments together.

To make the journey even more enjoyable, we’ve added an extra day to the standard route, giving families more time to take it all in without feeling rushed. Daily hikes are manageable, and there’s often time for mini-explorations around the huts for those with energy to spare. Whether it’s spotting marmots, resting by a mountain stream, or simply walking hand-in-hand through blooming alpine meadows, each day brings something new to discover and enjoy.

While this version of the Lasörling Höhenweg is tailored for families, it’s still a real mountain adventure. Expect rocky paths, steep sections both uphill and downhill, and hikes that range from 4 to 6 hours a day. Some parts of the trail cross unstable terrain with loose rocks and debris, and several sections are aided by fixed cables for added safety. This trek is best suited for families with older children who already have some experience in alpine environments.

1

Hinterbichl - Clarahütte

Duration: 05:25 h
Distance: 11.7 km
Ascent: 810 m
Descent: 100 m
We start the day with an easy and scenic walk towards the Islitzer Alm—make sure to take a break here for a coffee and a generous plate of Kaiserschmarrn (kids love it!). From there, it’s just a short and relaxed stretch to the Umbalfälle, a series of beautiful waterfalls that are also a local favourite, especially on sunny weekends. There's a fun, family-friendly path along the falls with wooden platforms and viewing points that make it extra exciting for little adventurers. After soaking in the views, the trail gently climbs further into the valley. It's a steady but manageable uphill walk to the Clarahütte, perched at 2,038 metres and surrounded by impressive mountain scenery.

Clarahütte - Neue Reichenbergerhütte

Duration: 05:00 h
Distance: 10.1 km
Ascent: 740 m
Descent: 200 m
On the second day, we follow the trail back a short distance before crossing the mountain river Isel—a scenic spot and a nice change of pace. From there, the route leads us into the quiet and picturesque Dabertal valley. If you're hiking in June, there's a good chance you'll come across some lingering patches of snow along the way, adding a touch of alpine charm to the landscape. About halfway through the hike, we enter the Hohe Tauern National Park. The path here is relatively flat and easy-going, making for a pleasant walk with time to take in the views. We end the day at the Neue Reichenberger Hütte, located right next to the serene Bödensee glacial lake—a peaceful and beautiful place to unwind after a rewarding day on the trail.

Neue Reichenbergerhütte - Bergerseehütte

Duration: 06:05 h
Distance: 10.5 km
Ascent: 620 m
Descent: 1010 m
Start the day with a good breakfast—this is one of the tougher stages, but also one of the most rewarding. We begin with a steady climb to the Göslewand, a striking viewpoint high above the valley. From there, it’s a short hike to the Rote Lenke, a mountain pass named after its reddish rock formations. This marks the transition from Bödensee to Kleinbachboden. The trail then heads downhill to the Michtalscharte, where you’ll get fantastic views of the Venedigergruppe. The descent makes this part a bit easier, even for those hiking with kids. After a final stretch, we reach the Bergerseehütte—beautifully located by a mountain lake and a great place to unwind after a full day on the trail.

Bergerseehütte - Lasörlinghütte

Duration: 03:40 h
Distance: 5.2 km
Ascent: 600 m
Descent: 490 m

Today’s stage is short (around 5 km), which may sound easy at first. But don’t be fooled: this is one of the most adventurous parts of the trek. The trail starts with a steep climb of over 500 metres, with cables to assist in places. As you ascend, take time to look back and enjoy the stunning views of the Bergersee and the Bergersee Hut from above. The terrain can be tricky, with loose scree and rocks, so go steady, watch your step, and don’t hesitate to pause for breaks—the stretch is short, and it’s worth taking your time. After crossing the Berger Törl Pass, the descent begins, and before long the Lasörlinghütte comes into view, inviting you to rest and enjoy the scenery.

Optional hike: If the kids still have some energy left (or you do!), you can take an optional afternoon walk to the Virgentörl and Gritzerseen. It adds about 5 km and takes roughly 3 hours, but the mountain lakes and wide-open views are definitely worth the effort.

Lasörlinghütte - Zupalseehütte

Duration: 03:10 h
Distance: 6.6 km
Ascent: 280 m
Descent: 220 m

We head east today, following a gradually ascending path. It’s a relaxed climb, and from the highest point, you’re treated to panoramic views all the way to the Zupalseehütte. On clear days, you’ll see deep into the Virgental and even catch a glimpse of the majestic Grossglocknergruppe. This is a relatively short hiking day, giving you time to rest or take on an extra adventure in the afternoon.

Optional hike: If you feel like exploring a bit more, the climb to Griften is a great option. It’s a fun excursion that takes around 2.5 hours and is doable with older kids or anyone who still has some energy to spare.

Zupalseehütte - Virgen

Duration: 04:10 h
Distance: 9.3 km
Ascent: 110 m
Descent: 1240 m

On the final day, we begin our descent into the valley and say goodbye to the high trails of the Lasörling Höhenweg. We’re no longer following the Höhenweg itself, but instead take a direct route down to Virgen. The day starts with a fairly steep descent along the Zupal Bach—nothing too technical, but it's good to take it slow and steady, especially with kids. Once we pass the mountain lake, we pick up the clear path that winds gently into the valley.

As we lose altitude, the scenery changes: we dip below the tree line and enter the forest—something we haven’t seen much of in the past few days. The shade and soft forest paths are a nice change, especially for little legs. Just before reaching Virgen, we cross the Isel one last time, just like we did on the first day. And with that, your family’s alpine adventure comes to a close—tired legs, full hearts, and lots of memories to take home.
