Welcome to the Lasörling Höhenweg. Do you have little experience in the mountains or are you with your family? Then the Lasörling Höhenweg is a fantastic way to get to know the Austrian Alps together with your children. Enjoy beautiful views of the Venedigergruppe and Großglocknergruppe and stay in Austria's most hospitable mountain huts. The distances between the mountain huts are relatively short but can be extended with short day hikes from your accommodation.

Please Note! The distances are relatively short, but it is still a hike in the mountains on a so-called 'Höhenweg'. It definitely won't be a 'walk in the park' and you will also pass some more technical sections. The trek is around 50 kilometres long and has a total ascent and descent of 3,100 meters. During this 6-day trek, you will hike between 4 and 6 hours per day. Will you join us?

Hinterbichl - Clarahütte

Duration: 05:25 h
Distance: 11.7 km
Ascent: 810 m
Descent: 100 m
We start the day with a pleasant walk towards the Islitzer Alm—perfect for a coffee break and a generous plate of Kaiserschmarrn (always a hit with kids!). From there, it’s a short stretch to the Umbalfälle, a spectacular series of waterfalls that are especially popular on sunny weekends. As you make your way along the falls, the trail gradually turns into the main ascent of the day. Wooden platforms, stairs, and viewing points add variety and excitement, especially for younger hikers, while the steady climb keeps things engaging without being overwhelming. Continuing upward, you eventually reach the Clarahütte at 2,038 metres, beautifully set amid dramatic mountain scenery.

Clarahütte - Neue Reichenbergerhütte

Duration: 05:15 h
Distance: 10.5 km
Ascent: 730 m
Descent: 180 m

From Clarahütte, this is a serious alpine stage despite the beginner classification. The route gains 730 m and includes a short technical section where the terrain is more demanding than the rest of the route. Sure-footedness, calm movement and mountain hiking experience are important here. Sturdy footwear and the right equipment matter, especially in poor weather or early-season conditions.

After leaving Clarahütte, the route crosses the mountain river Isel and heads into the Dabertal. The climb builds steadily rather than in one short push, passing highlights such as Regenbach Waterfall, Bridge Over the Isel, Daberlenke and small alpine lakes. The trail is mostly unpaved mountain terrain, with longer stretches where concentration matters. The flagged technical section comes after the first part of the route, so pace yourself before reaching it.

The route finishes at Neue Reichenberger Hütte beside the Bödensee glacial lake. This is a remote mountain hut arrival in Hohe Tauern National Park, with simple alpine surroundings and a clear sense of being deep in the mountains.

Neue Reichenbergerhütte - Bergerseehütte

Duration: 06:05 h
Distance: 10.5 km
Ascent: 620 m
Descent: 1010 m
Start the day with a good breakfast—this is one of the tougher stages, but also one of the most rewarding. We begin with a steady climb to the Göslewand, a striking viewpoint high above the valley. From there, it’s a short hike to the Rote Lenke, a mountain pass named after its reddish rock formations. This marks the transition from Bödensee to Kleinbachboden. The trail then heads downhill to the Michtalscharte, where you’ll get fantastic views of the Venedigergruppe. The descent makes this part a bit easier, even for those hiking with kids. After a final stretch, we reach the Bergerseehütte—beautifully located by a mountain lake and a great place to unwind after a full day on the trail.

Bergerseehütte - Lasörlinghütte

Duration: 03:45 h
Distance: 5.3 km
Ascent: 590 m
Descent: 490 m

This is a short but serious mountain stage, and it should not be presented as an easy family walk. Over 5.23 km, the route gains 590 m before descending towards the Lasörlinghütte. The trail starts with a steep climb of over 500 metres, with cables to assist in places. Children may manage it well, but parents should be ready for rocky alpine terrain, narrow-feeling sections and places where careful footing is important.

From the Bergerseehütte, the route climbs away from the hut, with a viewpoint back towards the Bergerseehütte early on. The main effort is the ascent to Berger Törl, where the route reaches its highest section after a continuous climb. Around this crossing, the terrain feels more alpine and exposed, so a steady pace, proper footwear and good concentration matter more than speed.

After the Berger Törl, the trail descends towards the Lasörlinghütte, with views into the Glaurat Valley along the way. The hut comes into view near the end of the descent, giving a clear goal after the more demanding middle section. Once you arrive at the Lasörlinghütte, take time to rest before considering any extra walking.

Optional hike: If everyone still feels fresh after arriving, you can consider the extra walk to the Virgentörl and Gritzerseen. It adds about 5 km and takes roughly 3 hours, so only do this in good weather and with enough energy left in the group. After the main stage, many families may prefer to simply rest at the hut.

Lasörlinghütte - Zupalseehütte

Duration: 03:10 h
Distance: 6.6 km
Ascent: 280 m
Descent: 220 m

We head east today, following a gradually ascending path. It’s a relaxed climb, and from the highest point, you’re treated to panoramic views all the way to the Zupalseehütte. On clear days, you’ll see deep into the Virgental and even catch a glimpse of the majestic Grossglocknergruppe. This is a relatively short hiking day, giving you time to rest or take on an extra adventure in the afternoon.

Optional hike: If you feel like exploring a bit more, the climb to Griften is a great option. It’s a fun excursion that takes around 2.5 hours and is doable with older kids or anyone who still has some energy to spare.

Zupalseehütte - Virgen

Duration: 04:15 h
Distance: 9.25 km
Ascent: 110 m
Descent: 1240 m
The last day's programme includes another substantial descent. No longer following the Lasörling Höhenweg, we directly hike into the valley in Virgen. The path starts with a not-too-easy descent along the Zupal Bach. Near the mountain lake, we pick up the path to the valley. As you descend, you get further and further below the tree line so you are soon hiking in the forest, which was not the case in recent days due to the altitude. Just before Virgen, you cross the Isel once more as on the first day and your hiking adventure comes to an end here. After completing your trek, make your way to Matrei in Osttirol, where your accommodation for the night has been arranged—perfect for a well-earned rest and a celebratory meal.
