Route
What's the plan?Day 1: Arrival day
On the first day you will travel on your own initiative to Lake Bohinj where you can spend some time to discover its direct surroundings.

11,4 km | 5-6hours | Level: Moderate | ↑ 1450m | Trail type: One way
From Stara Fuzina, the village next to the lake, your trekking adventure begins. Turn onto a forest path to arrive at Mostnica Gorge after about a kilometre and a half. A beautiful gorge with clear blue water. You cross the Devil's Bridge towards the Voje Valley. There is a nice saga about this bridge, perhaps a Slovenian you meet along the way will tell you more about it. Once crossed, you continue your journey through the Voje Valley to arrive at your accommodation for the night; Vadnikov dom na Velem polju (1817 m). After a hike of about 6 hours, you may enjoy a well-deserved rest here.

Night 2: Vadnikov dom na Velem polju (1817 m)
This mountain hut is named after Slovenian poet Valentin Vodnik (1758-1819), who was also a mountaineer and climbed Mali Triglav in 1795.The hut is open from early June to mid-October. There are 50 seats in the dining hall, 22 beds in eight rooms and another 31 sleeping places in common areas. The winter room with 10 beds is open all winter.

This mountain hut is on the western side of Triglav, near the Valley of the Triglav Lakes. FAQ
FAQBest season
Treks to the summit of Mount Triglav are available between June and October, outside these months the mountain huts in this region are closed. July and August are the most popular months, temperatures range between 10 °C and 25 °C. The mountains provide cool air when temperatures rise in lower areas. Summer weather in the mountains is quite cool; when it heads towards 30°C on the Slovenian plains, it is only 10°C at the top of Mount Triglav. On the hottest summer days, the weather in the mountains can change quickly. Thunderstorms are relatively common during this period and they develop quickly in the late afternoon. July and August are very popular for locals, the mountain huts are pleasantly crowded.
In the pre-season and post-season (June, September and October), temperatures are slightly lower and you can enjoy the mountain trails without the summer heat or winter cold. In the early and late seasons, you will meet fewer people along the way. It is often below freezing at night and snow can remain in nooks and crannies during this period. The weather on the mountain is very variable during this period, one day it is comfortably warm, and one day later you will need a winter jacket. Make sure you are ready for that. Don't underestimate the extreme and unpredictable weather in the mountains, come prepared for all weather conditions.
What are the prices of food and drinks at the Huts?
Most meals and drinks in mountain huts have regular prices, but water, soft drinks and beer are more expensive than in the valleys. Here are some examples:
Coffee - 2 eur / 1,5l bottled water - 4,40 eur / Beer - 4 eur
Goulash - 8 eur / Veggie/meat stew - 6 eur / Sandwich - 4,50 eur
Please note that the huts don't accept credit card payments! Cash only.
How demanding is the tour?
The hike is considered a challenging trek. Although certain parts of a trail may seem easy due to low incline, they do demand a high level of endurance and can be challenging for those, who are not used to longer hikes. The climb to the summit of Mt. Triglav is by via Ferrata (Italian for “iron way”), which is an extremely steep climb on steel ladders and steel wires and is not recommended for people, who are not in good physical condition or are afraid of heights. The climb is also not recommended for children younger than 15 years and pregnant women.
Tipping in Slovenia
During this self-guided trip, there won't be a guide to tip at the end of your trek. However, private drivers will take care of your transfers and you will be eating at restaurants and mountain huts. Tipping is not obligatory in Slovenia, but it is always appreciated if the service provider did a good job. A tip of 5 to 15 percent is greatly appreciated in restaurants. The same percentage applies to the trekking guide if you decide to climb Mt Triglav.
COVID-19
COVID-19
The Covid-19 pandemic has had its grip on us, and accommodations around the world have had to take several preventive measures over the past two years. In the meantime, most of the measurements are not taken into consideration anymore, yet it is definitely still a factor to take into account. Some restrictions that are worth mentioning:
- Don't go on your hiking trip if you have symptoms.
- Not all the accommodations are allowed to operate at full capacity yet, so make sure you book your stay in advance.
- Keep your distance and hygiene.
- Use disinfectants and hand sanitizers.
