Mount Elgon is an extinct, shielded volcano in eastern Uganda. This volcano stands on the border between Uganda and Kenya. First Erupting around 24 million years ago, this stunning massif was once Africa’s highest Mountain, even higher than Kilimanjaro’s current 5,895 m. Thousands of years of erosion have left this giant as the eighth highest peak on the continent.
The highest point on Mount Elgon, named "Wagagai" by the locals, stands at 4,321 meters on the Ugandan side. Contrary to common belief, the ultimate goal of reaching the top is not the ascent to Wagagai, but the descent into this volcano’s vast caldera, the largest in the world. This trek is for those looking to go that extra mile during their trip to Uganda. Climb Mount Elgon, the oldest extinct volcano in East Africa, and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Elgon highlands!
