Sapa, locally known as Sa Pa, is a small town in the Hoàng Liên Son Mountains of northwestern Vietnam. The town is a popular base for trekking expeditions and every year it sees thousands of people that want to get into the green, rice terrace decorated mountains. The local minorities, chiefly the H’Mong, the Dao and the Dai have been accommodating trekkers for little over a century. In the Sapa region it is therefore common to stay with local families.
Organized trekkings in a group are the standard in the Sapa Region. Because trekking in Sapa doesn’t require a lot of experience, anyone will be able to join. If you want to beef it up a bit, you should consider doing the trek to on Fansipan Mountain. At 3.134 meters, Mount Fansipan is the highest peak in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam combined. This is why Fansipan is dubbed the “The Roof of Indochina”.
