Most people meet the Moselle from the water. From the deck of a river boat you glide past vineyards that climb almost vertically out of the valley, past castles standing over slate rooftops, through hairpin bend after hairpin bend. What almost nobody realizes is that there is a second Moselle directly above all of that, reached on foot: a high trail along the rim of the valley, with the river appearing and disappearing far below you and a wine village waiting at the end of the afternoon. Hiking the Moselle valley is not a flat riverside stroll — you walk the upper edge, along the shoulders of the Eifel and the Hunsrück, and drop down in the evening to the village where your hotel is. The anchor towns are Trier in the south, Bernkastel-Kues and Traben-Trarbach in the classic middle stretch, and Cochem and Koblenz toward the north.
