Route

What's the plan?

DAY 1: Arrive in Ulaanbaatar
Today you will enjoy a city tour, where you will visit the National History Museum, the Fine Art Museum, and the Gandan Monastery.

Accommodation: in the hotel

DAY 2: Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park
Our day begins with the flight to Dalanzadgad. Once there, we will drive towards Khongoriin Els sand dunes. Our route takes us through the Gurvan Saikhan Mountain range, where there is a great opportunity to see the wildlife of the Gobi, including Ibex, Argali (big-horned wild sheep), various small birds, and gophers.

Accommodation: in the tent

DAYS 3-4: Chono Kharaikh River
Today we will arrive at the camel breeder’s settlement from which we will get camels and instructions on our upcoming trekking activity. Start trekking towards Chono Kharaikh River, via Zuun Shurguul - a dense Gobi forest of saxaul trees and tall grasses. Riding Bactrian camels is relatively easy due to their gentle gait and soft, comfortable backs. Mongolians use colorful hand-made saddles for riding, which sit between the two- humps of the camels.

Accommodation: in the tent
Riding time: 3 hours

DAY 5: Trek to the Gilbent mountain range
The Gilbent mountain range, though low, is nonetheless impressive, rising from the desert plain. We will spend the night at a Tented camp at Boodog Khotol hill.

Accommodation: in the tent
Riding time: 3 hours

DAY 6: Zagiin Khooloi
We will ride to Zagiin Khooloi (saxaul valley) via Ukhaa Tolgod, which is the flaming cliffs where a number of dinosaur fossils have been found. The road to Zagiin Khooloi is flat, with outcrops of vegetation, and herds of antelope and wild ass racing across the sandy plains.

Accommodation: in the tent
Riding time: 3 hours

DAY 7: Trek through the Gurvan Tesiin Valley
Today we will pass the beautiful Nemegt Mountain range to the north and the Khuren Khanan Mountain range to the south. We will spend the night at a tented camp at Oyodoliin Khudag. The Camel riding finishes here.

Accommodation: in the tent

DAY 8: Naran Daats Oasis
Today we will take our vehicle and drive to Naran Daats Oasis - a beautiful paradise where saxaul trees, tooroi, and khailaas grow to such heights, that one is reminded that they existed many hundreds of thousands of years ago when dinosaurs still roamed the Gobi plains. We will finally arrive at Zulganai oasis. However, Zulganai still reminds you of the mountain steppe area, and you’ll still feel sand under your feet.

Accommodation: in the tent

DAY 9: Khermen Tsav
Drive to Khermen Tsav, which means “cracked wall”. Here the mudrock stretches from the northwest to the southwest, and the formation of Khermen Tsav resembles unfinished artistic architecture and well-designed red brick buildings of ancient cities. Many dinosaur fossils were found here among the saxaul forest and desert plants.

Accommodation: in the tent

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Best season

The weather in Mongolia is definitely one of its most curious features: it is so far inland that no sea tempers its climate. Moreover, Mongolia has 3 distinctive regions: the south, with the Gobi Desert, The North-west with its mountain ranges, and the center.

Mongolia is popularly known as “The Land of the Blue Sky” because it has an average of 230-260 annual days of sunshine. Despite the sunshine, temperatures in Mongolia can get really low, especially in winter (December-February), with temperatures of -30° C.

When is the best time to visit Mongolia? Well, summer and beginning of autumn are the seasons most recommended, that is, between June and September. During these months, temperatures range between 15°C and 30°C. Spring and late Autumn are not bad options neither, but bring a thicker jacket, because temperatures at night get down to -8°C.

Despite the low temperatures, remember to bring with your sunglasses and sunscreen, it is not called “the land of the Blue Sky” for nothing.

What should I bring for my nomad family visit?

It is polite to leave some form of gift with the host to repay them for their hospitality. In general, money does not make a good gift, so leave something personal like postcards from your country, Polaroid photographs and sweets are all thoughtful tokens. It is, however, impolite to take photographs without asking. Many Mongolians dislike tourists taking photographs of them or their children without warning. However, they are usually delighted if you do take their photograph, provided you will then send copies back to them.

How do I get the visa for Mongolia?

You need a visa upon arrival if you are traveling to Mongolia from a country that has no Mongolian consulate or embassy, you can pick up a 30-day tourist visa upon arrival at the airport in Ulaanbaatar. You’ll need 108,000 tugrugs (45 USD) and two passport photos – you should also have a pre-approval letter from an organization or company in Mongolia. In case of booking a tour with us, we will help you to get a visa support letter and further assistance.

Tipping

Tipping is not that common in Mongolia. However, it is common to tip guides and drivers. How much to tip is never clear, but we advise to tip your guide and driver some 2-5 USD per day of trek. If you got a good service and had a good time thanks to their work, show them your gratitude. Be generous, it will be much appreciated.
