Route

What’s the plan?

Day 1: Pick up point to Senaru Village

Our driver will pick you up at Lombok International Airport or any other area in Lombok, and will take you to Senaru village. From the airport it will takes about 3 hours to get to Senaru Village. We will then check in at the Home Stay. If there is still enough time, you can have a Senaru waterfall tour. Senaru’s best known attraction is the Sendang Gila waterfall, which attracts thousands of Indonesian and foreign visitors annually.

Located at about 600m above sea level, the waterfall is an easy 20 minute walk from Senaru Village. A pleasant alternative route for the way back takes you along the edge of the steep valley, following the irrigation canal.

For the more adventurous, Senaru’s “second waterfall”, Tiu Kelep, can be reached after another hour walking upstream from Sendang Gila. Your efforts will be rewarded with the beauty of the waterfall and a swim in its deep pool. Locals say that every time you swim behind the main waterfall of Tiu Kelep you become a year younger!

(NOTE: Waterfall Tour is not included)

At 7pm, you will meet the guide for a trekking briefing. If you arrive later, the trekking briefing can be done in the morning after breakfast.

Day 2: Senaru Village to Crater RIM

Our driver will pick you up at the hotel lobby at 07.30 AM (after Breakfast) and will take you to the Gate of Rinjani National Park (about 1km from the hotel). Register at Rinjani National Park Registration Office in Senaru. Your guide will arrange the National Park entry tickets and then the trekking will begin.

The first hours of the trek are a steep climb through thick tropical forests rich in flora, bird life and a variety of butterflies. You might see orchids and, if you are lucky, the rare black ebony leaf monkey, known locally as Lutung. Rest stops are taken along the way. Under normal conditions, lunch will be served at Post II.

Depending on your physical condition and weather conditions, the night camp will be set either in the forest at post 3 Mondokon Lolak (2,000m) after about five hours climbing from senaru, or continue the ascend for another couple of hours through grassy meadows up to Plawangan 1 Senaru crater rim at 2,641m. From the crater rim you will enjoy sweeping views of the lake Segara Anak (2,00m) and the summit of Mt. Rinjani.

Within the crater, Mt. Baru Jari ( 2,351m) is an active volcano, which last erupted dramatically in 1994, followed by small eruptions on 2004, 2015 and 2016. On a clear evening, the Gili Islands, Bali and Mt. Agung can be seen to the west. The crew will set up all necessary gear here (tent, sleeping bag, mattress, pillow and toilet tent) and prepare your dinner.

Day 3: Crater RIM Senaru – Senaru Village – Next Destination

After breakfast we start our trek back to Senaru village (601 m). Rest stops are taken along the way. Under normal conditions, lunch will be prepared on Post 1 Extra. After a six-hour walk from the rim, the trek ends at the Rinjani Trekking Center Office in Senaru, where the car will be waiting to drive you to your next destination.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Best season

The best months for a trekking on Lombok are from April to December. In fact, officially you can only book your trekking for these months. This has everything to do with the fact that Mount Rinjani National Park is closed in the rainy season, which lasts from January to March. Although there are providers who nevertheless have access, we recommend avoiding the mountain in the rainy season.

Training
Do you make it to your destinations as planned? Often this depends on the unpredictable weather in the mountains. However, it can also depend on your own physical condition.

Mount Rinjani is principally for everyone, but some physical condition can make trekking lot easier and more enjoyable. One sure way to get fit for trekking and hiking in Indonesia is to, you could have guessed it: hike more. Do you like walking, have you done trekking at an altitude before and do you sport twice a week on average? With a little extra training, you’ll soon be ready for this beautiful trekking in Lombok Island.

Another good idea is to walk a lot of stairs. This will especially help for the first day, when you conquer 1500 meters of elevation. Make sure you are well prepared. This is important for your safety, but also for that of your team. Make sure you start six months in advance with an hour’s hike twice a week.

Where is the Pergasingan Hill?

The Pergasingan hill is located on a hill north of the Sembalun Village. It is 1,700 meter high, and usually some visitors use this place for training before they climb Rinjani Mountain. It is also popular for extreme sports such as paragliding and mountain biking.

Tipping

It is normal to tip porters, guides and chefs. Opinions on how many are divided. We recommend reserving an amount of IDR 200K for porters. A guide will often get a little more and will expect about IDR 300K. Converted this is an amount of approximately USD 20. Be generous. It will be appreciated.

Permits
The treks always include entrance to Mount Rinjani National Park. This means that permits are also inclusive. The fee for permits consists of 13% for the National Park, 62% for the Rinjani Ecotourism Program and 25% for the maintenance of the trails.
