Full Rwenzori Mountains Experience

Duration: 10 days
Trails: T2 trails
Distance: 0 - 10 km per day
Ascent per day: 500 - 1000 m ascent per day

> Explore Uganda in one of its most adventurous ways
> Summit Mount Stanley and Margherita Peak at 5,109 m
> Come eye to eye with impressive African wildlife

This journey into the Rwenzori Mountains is not just a trek, it feels like stepping into one of Africa’s last truly wild mountain worlds. While the Kilimanjaro, in lower-lying Tanzania, draws the crowds, the Rwenzori feels wilder, quieter and far more remote. From the calm shores of Entebbe to the high camps deep in the range, the route builds slowly into a real expedition. You begin in lush Afro Montane forest alive with birds and monkeys, then climb through bamboo, giant heather and surreal alpine valleys towards the glaciated heights of Mount Stanley and Margherita Peak.

What makes this tour so special is the constant change in scenery, from forests filled with birds and monkeys to high passes, giant lobelias, misty valleys and rugged peaks. Camps like Bugata, Hunwick’s and Margherita make the adventure feel even more remote and memorable. All in all, this is a unique adventure that is worth every moment and brings plenty of anticipation long before you set foot on the trail.

Note: It is important to start your Uganda visa application in good time, but we are of course happy to help if needed.

Kasese - Kalalama Camp

Duration: 04:10 h
Distance: 9 km
Ascent: 1450 m
Descent: 20 m

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the starting point of the hike, where the real mountain adventure begins. The trail sets off along the valley floor and gradually climbs through the lush Afro Montane Forest. Tall trees rise overhead, birds call from every direction, and the first hours on the trail ease you gently into the rhythm of the Rwenzori.

As you continue higher, the forest is full of life. Blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys are often seen in the trees, while the rare L’Hoest monkey may appear if luck is on your side. Now and then, the distant calls of chimpanzees echo through the forest. Higher up, the trail enters the Bamboo-Mimulopsis Zone, where dense bamboo and thick vegetation create a wild and remote atmosphere. In the wet season, this part can be muddy and slippery, adding a more rugged feel to the day but also increasing the challange.

By the end of the climb, you reach Kalalama Camp at 3,147 metres, set in the Heather-Rapanea Zone. Here, the landscape begins to change, with tall heather trees giving the camp a distinct mountain character. Keep an eye out for the striking Rwenzori Turaco, one of the region’s most colourful birds. After your first full day on the trail, Kalalama is a rewarding place to rest and settle in for the night.

Kalalama Camp - Bugata Camp

Duration: 03:25 h
Distance: 9 km
Ascent: 960 m
Descent: 40 m

In the morning, the trail continues past Mutinda Camp and climbs further into the high mountain world of the Rwenzori. The route leads towards Bugata Camp at around 4,100 metres, with the landscape becoming more open, rugged and dramatic as you gain height. This is a day of steady progress, with ridges, valleys and streams guiding the way deeper into the range.

Along the trail, you pass moss-covered waterfalls and Giant Heather trees draped in lichen, giving the landscape a wild, almost otherworldly feel. The path winds through a misty valley rich in alpine plants and flowers, though it can be boggy, especially in the wet season. Along the way, you cross the Mutinda and Namusangi valleys, with views of waterfalls and the striking Mutinda Peaks rising around you.

The final climb brings you to Bugata Camp, beautifully set in the heart of the high Rwenzori. From camp, there are fine views of Lake Kopello, Weismann’s Peak and several surrounding lakes and peaks. The area is known for its rare alpine vegetation and, with some luck, you may even spot the shy Rwenzori red forest duiker. It is a spectacular place to rest for the night, surrounded by silence, mist and mountain scenery.

Bugata Camp - Hunwick's Camp

Duration: 02:45 h
Distance: 6.5 km
Ascent: 500 m
Descent: 550 m

From Bugata Camp, the trail continues towards Hunwick’s Camp, crossing Bamwanjarra Pass at 4,450 metres. After climbing a ridge, you reach this Bamwanjarra Pass, where clear weather can reveal some of the main peaks of the Rwenzori. From here, the trail descends into boggy valleys dotted with evergreen vegetation, giant groundsels and lobelias, creating one of the most striking alpine landscapes of the trek. This is also a good area to look out for the colourful Malachite Sunbird. The route includes a few steeper sections before rising again over a ridge.

At the end of the day, you arrive at Hunwick’s Camp, beautifully positioned among some of the range’s most impressive scenery. From camp, there are superb views of Mt. Stanley, Mt. Baker, Weismann’s Peak and McConnell’s Prong. Surrounded by high peaks and quiet mountain wilderness, it is a memorable place to spend the night.

Hunwick's Camp - Margherita Camp

Duration: 01:45 h
Distance: 4.2 km
Ascent: 520 m
Descent: 60 m

Today, the trail descends across the valley floor towards the beautiful Lake Kitendara, one of the most striking spots in the high Rwenzori. Surrounded by lush vegetation and dark, deep water, the lake brings a quiet and dramatic atmosphere to the day.

From the lake, the route climbs steadily up Scott Elliott’s Pass before continuing along the ridge towards Margherita Camp at 4,485 metres. This part of the hike feels remote and rugged, with the landscape becoming rockier and more exposed as you gain height. The climb is demanding, but the setting grows more impressive with every step.

Margherita Camp is tucked between huge rocks, offering some shelter from the strong winds that often sweep through this high mountain terrain. It is also a place with history, as this was the exact spot where the Duke of Abruzzi camped in 1906 before his ascent of Margherita Peak. Spending the night here adds a real sense of expedition to the journey.

Margherita Camp - Hunwick's Camp

Duration: 04:10 h
Distance: 9.8 km
Ascent: 650 m
Descent: 1140 m

The summit attempt begins deep in the night, with an early wake-up at 2:00 am and departure just half an hour later. The climb to Mt. Stanley at 5,109 metres starts in darkness, adding a real sense of adventure and focus to one of the most demanding and memorable days of the trek.

The early start is essential, as weather in these high mountains can change quickly and clouds or snow often build up by early afternoon. For safety, the summit must be reached before 10:00 am, otherwise it is time to turn back. The route crosses the Margherita Glacier, where melting ice has made the terrain steeper and more fragile, with hidden caves along the way. Careful footing and close attention to the guides are especially important here. Climbers with less experience can choose a scenic hike towards a viewpoint near Alexandra Peak instead.

After the summit attempt, the route descends again to Hunwick’s Camp. Whether you made it to the top or took the alternative trail, it is a big and unforgettable day in the Rwenzori, filled with high mountain drama, effort and remarkable views.

Hunwick's Camp - Kiharo Camp

Duration: 05:05 h
Distance: 12.5 km
Ascent: 780 m
Descent: 1320 m

After the Summit day, the route climbs steadily along a ridge towards McConnell’s Prong, with wide views of the main Rwenzori peaks opening up around you. It is a rewarding morning in a dramatic high mountain setting, where each step brings more of the rugged landscape into view.

The trail continues to Oliver’s Pass at 4,505 metres. From here, there is the option to make an extra climb to Weismann’s Peak at 4,620 metres for even broader views over the surrounding summits and valleys. After the pass, the route crosses below the peak and reaches the source of the Nyamwamba River, a special point high in the mountains where the water begins its long journey down.

From there, the trail descends through valleys shaped long ago by ancient glaciers, with steep cliffs and dense vegetation closing in around the path. By the end of the day, you arrive at Kiharo Camp, beautifully set in this wild and sheltered mountain landscape. It is a striking place to rest and reflect on another memorable day in the Rwenzori.

Kiharo Camp - Kasese

Distance: 13.5 km
Ascent: 210 m
Descent: 2100 m

The final day on the trail leads from Kiharo Camp down through the beautiful Nyamwamba Valley, bringing the trek to a memorable close. Most of the route is downhill, allowing you to take in the landscape one last time as you leave the high mountains behind and gradually return to the edge of the park.

The path winds through rich forest and deep valleys, past moss-covered rocks and cascading waterfalls that give this stretch a wild and almost hidden feel. Along the river, there is still a good chance of spotting wildlife, including duikers, primates, birds and hyrax. In some places, the trail carefully skirts steep waterfalls along narrow ridges, before easing into a gentler descent.

At the park gate, the mountain journey officially comes to an end, but the day is not quite over yet. A short final walk brings you to Trekkers Hostel, where you can look back on the days in the Rwenzori with tired legs and a head full of mountain memories.
